Huge, lovely home converted into a museum that celebrates both the family and the 19th - 20th century history of upper class Cuencanos. A definite must see on the fringes of the historic center. Fronts on a main street but has five levels on the back including a very popular restaurant. Museum is free and fascinating but nearly all the signage is in Spanish.

Just reopened two months ago, this museum is the former home of poet, Remigio Crespo Toral. He lived between 1860 and 1939 and had a wide ranging career as an author, journalist, educator, lawyer and diplomat.

Other sites I have found regarding this museum are now outdated with incorrect information. The museum has a free entry. There are three primary rooms to witness the way Toral, his wife and 10 children lived. The wallpapers and ceiling wall borders are worthy of a look.

Recently, we attended a piano recital held in the museum. The director opened the evening by stating this is a work in progress. As funds are procured they will open more rooms as well as the garden in the back.

It would be disappointing to come to Cuenca and not see this little gem.

This was a surprising and pleasant experience to view this particular museum. As a photographer, I was particularly interested in the photo display of different cameras from different periods. Aside from the photography, the other aspects of the museum were well displayed and interesting. I am glad that I was able to visit.

There is no fee to enter this museum.

First it was hard to find the start of the museum and I got 4 different answers from different people in the building to find the museum access. Secondly rude staff - in order to visit I had to give name, city, age, passport number etc to woman who was on a power trip. Seemed a bit overkill for a small museum. Not much to see once inside.

I went to this museum, forgot my mask so the security woman says I need one. I walk back to hotel, upon my return she now says I need proof of vaccination and won’t let me in. I can’t even get in the country without vaccination, no other museum asked for this. She was just on a power trip. Forget this place!

The permanent exhibit in stately Remigio Crespo Toral house Is a poorly documented tribute to some of the great men of Cuenca and Ecuador.

I know they are great men because many of the local streets are named after them. Unfortunately the visit to this museum taught me nothing about who they were or what they accomplished. There was almost no explanation of the many portraits, busts and artifacts pertaining to these luminaries.

Free admission to the enormous, nicely maintained riverside mansion is the main attraction.

Unless you already know the history, have very specific interest in the building or the temporary exhibit, your time is better spent elsewhere.

Museums are supposed to teach, challenge and enlighten us. This one falls short.

This former mansion has been nicely renovated and has a lot of bits of furniture and art to see, but most of the exhibits (at least as of July 2017) are of clothing. Not original clothing in most cases; recreations of older dresses from bygone eras. It's completely free to visit, so I guess you get what you pay for. Worth a look, but not essential viewing.

Museo Remigio Crespo Toral offers well curated exhibits, including historically accurate restorations, that visually display the rich history and diverse culture of Ecuador. A professional quality recording, available for viewing on the highest floor of the multi-level building, introduces the museum - and Ecuador!

Interesting interiors of this large house. Photography and some history and maps, background of the main figures in Cuenca's history. Also a small collection of oil paintings.

I felt like a stranger wandering around somebody else's home. Once I got past that, I fund the exhibits delightfull.
