Very rude, go somewhere that values your business
Oct 2021 • Solo
As previously said in other reviews, female staff member is extremely rude. Obviously it is hurting their business. Just a horrible attitude, won’t ever go back. So many great business owners in Cuenca that would love your business. Seek them out instead of this place.

Not just the purchase of a hat, but A Hat Experience!
Nov 2016 • Couples
My husband and I went in to La Paja Toquilla today after getting rave reviews from the couples who are traveling with us and enjoyed shopping there yesterday--they bought five hats, and now I know why! Neither my husband nor I were certain we wanted or needed hats, but once we ventured in (after having visited the Panama Hat Museum), we were convinced. Our friends were assisted by Maria Luisa, but we were treated with great kindness by Tania, the owner. In contrast to another review, our experience could not have been more different. Given that we weren't sure we were going to buy a hat, Tania showed infinite patience and graciousness in making sure we tried various hats at various price points and were shown the difference in quality. We both left with the hats of our dreams and wouldn't hesitate to recommend putting this on your itinerary for a visit in Cuenca!

Worst Salesperson and Shopping Experience Ever!!!
Mar 2016 • Solo
I have been in sales for over forty years, and I have never experienced anything like Tania. I guess one of the other reviewers got lucky because her son was there to keep an eye on her. Frankly her lack of sales skills would disqualify her from holding such a position if not for her son to give her a job. For starters she dumped me a couple of times to deal with some locals. I overlooked that, but it was the arguments I encountered at every juncture that really chapped my hide. If it weren't for the fact that I liked a particular hat, and had space to ship it among the hats I was getting elsewhere, I would have been out of there in no time flat.

She even had the nerve to try and force me take the hat with a band that I didn't like in a color that I never wear. She never bothered to listen to what I wanted, and everything was an argument to get my needs met. I ended up buying a hat even after having put up with her combative attitude. She never learned the basic axiom of Sales 101. The customer is always right. I suspect she is freshly divorced and projecting her issues on men who are in the age range of her ex.

The last straw was when I showed her a hat that I got for my granddaughter. It was adorable and a great deal, but she proceeded to go on ad nauseum about how bad the quality was, and how her stuff was so much better. I literally had to tell her to shut up to get her to stop. Unfortunately, I had already purchased my hat, and she refused to give me a refund. I was so disgusted that I had no recourse, but to submit this review in the hopes of warning off any other men who might fall prey to her nightmarish sales techniques. Go to Homero Ortega instead. They have the best quality hats in town for less money than her son's store, and have been in business since 1899.

She is listed on her business card as the store manager. In that case I suggest she take charge and fire herself at her earliest convenience. I've seen lots of people fired for less. As Brando said at the end of "Apocalypse Now", "the horror, the horror!"

Beautiful hats, wonderful service
Apr 2014 • Couples
On a recent trip to Cuenca, my husband decided that he wanted to purchase a Panama hat. We heard this shop had a great selection, so we stopped by one morning. We met Tania the owner, who showed us many lovely hats, and made us feel at home. Her son, who works in the shop with her, spoke fluent English and answered our many questions. We left with a beautiful hat and and fond memories of our experience. Hat prices varied. Also carried women's bags, place mats, and small baskets--we bought a small basket and a set of coasters in addition to the hat. ALL for less than $50.

Best selection of Panama hats in Cuenca

Happened to see this shop and wandered in and it was exactly what I was looking for...all sorts of hats, all well-made, a variety of price points and a very helpful shopkeeper, who gave us a history lesson about the hats.
