We've been to the Museo Municpal de Arte Moderno twice and have enjoyed it on both occasions. They offer more traditional styled art mixed happily with multi-media presentations in film and other types of installations. (Not everything is always to my taste, but I find the way the artwork flow is designed to be interesting in itself. It's nice that they changed their showing frequently. Admission is free, but they do request a donation. They have a lovely garden inside the building that often hosts sculptures and if you look around long enough you'll find a delightful cement table, just waiting for a picnic lunch. I haven't tried to get in there yet with food, but will one day. PS, the photo above isn't from the Modern Art Museum, but the Salon del Pueblo located at Benigno Malo y Mariscal Sucre.

In historic center, a convent and former school converted to a Ecuadorian modern art museum. Small and quaint (and free) with some very good modernistic pieces and lovely gardens. The entire exhibit takes about 45 minutes to see but is well worth it.

One of the biggest surprises in Cuenca was to discover the photographs by Ila Coronel at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Cuenca. I was also struck by how well attended it was on a weekday afternoon, having worked at a contemporary art museum in the states. Being free invites a viewer to visit a favorite work multiple times during an exhibition. It is wonderful that they have have an innovative Director overseeing this gem of a museum.

We have been there 3 times in the past year. I am always amazed at how bad the art is. With only a rare exception, it is stuff that belongs in my trash can... :(

The name is misleading as the modern art on the ground floor is one small part of this excellent museum. Very interesting displays downstairs shows the modern history of Ecuador with coin & note collections etc but upstairs is the highlight. Be sure not to miss the authentic displays of Indian villages including shrunken heads!
It is a good 15 min walk from town but we enjoyed a safe walk by the river and back through the suburbs.

The Museum of Modern Art (formerly known as the Temperance House and built in the 17th century) used to serve as a detention center for mental patients, alcoholics, as well as a jail.

Cuenca’s Municipal Museum of Modern Art (MMAM) is located on the quiet and enjoyable Plaza San Sebastián and is a great spot to explore.
The museum hosts temporary exhibits which are deployed throughout the stark and quiet monastery-like site that was originally designed as a house of temperance.
I enjoy modern art museums because it is always interesting to see how current artists channel and interpret their country’s history and broader culture.
Our visit to the museum turned into a longer stay because we found the Plaza San Sebastian to be so delightful and relaxing. There is a grand old church, a beautiful fountain, mature landscaping, and excellent restaurants and cafés.
While MMAM may not be a “top attraction,” thecombined experience of visiting the museum and surrounding plaza is worthwhile if you have more than a couple of days in town and need a break from the busier sections of the city.
Admission is free.

Like many museums in Cuenca, it is free or almost free. A $1 donation requested. The exhibition includes works by school children and local artists. Nice walk to enjoy the converted convent, and changing exhibitions.

The exhibits here change all the time, so you never know what you're going to get. If modern art isn't your 'thing' then you probably won't be impressed by what's on show, least of all by what's here as of July 2017. Woeful might be a good word for it. However, the building is really interesting and is worth seeing on it's own and as it's completely free to visit, then why not? All the walls and rooms are whitewashed, but the wood is colour coded in either yellow, blue, purple or green to show whereabouts you are in the galleries. Really quite cool.

Free entrance, many placards in English. Nice stone heads on an adobe wall. Some installations just made us shake our heads. Several international artists represented.
