My sister and I went horseback riding with Carlos, our guide, outside of Cuenca in the mountains. He picked us up from our hotel and explained to us local traditions on our way to Hacienda Tortorillas. After choosing boots and helmets, we were introduced to the beautiful horses. Carlos took us up the mountain to a gorgeous lookout over Cuenca and the nearby valleys. The horses were incredibly well-trained and cared for, and we got the chance to trot and canter along the ridges and trails. Carlos took some great photos for us on the horses as well. After our amazing ride, Carlos prepared a delicious vegetarian meal for us with local vegetables, cheese, fruits, and eggs from the hacienda's chickens. His blackberry (mora) juice was to die for! In addition to the horseback riding and food, we appreciated Carlos' knowledge and interest in sharing the local cultures and traditions with us. His English was impeccable, but we also had the opportunity to practice our Spanish with him. We couldn't recommend this more for a magical day outside of Cuenca.

We booked two trips with TerraDiversa when we first arrived in Cuenca. First was a combined Devils Nose train and Ingapirca day tour. Our guide on that trip was Adrian and he was fantastic. We are learning Spanish and decided to have him do the tour in Spanish for us. He helped out all day when we struggled with concepts or words and gladly switched to English whenever we needed him to do so. What a great day! He knew all about what we were seeing and also was happy to discuss a lot about Ecuadorian life with us. It could not possibly have been more fun and interesting. We then took a day trip to Parque Nacional Cajas, which is a beautiful location. Our guide was Juan and driver Klever. Both were very good. Juan was a walking encyclopedia of biological and ecological information. The group was mixed so the entire tour was in English. Juan gave us a few Spanish names to supplement the excellent information he gave in English. I enjoyed a few short conversations with Klever as well. Cajas was such an enchanting spot we decided to make another day hike up there in the high parama, I got lost in the details of bus lines and trying to find a decent map with the trails on it. I finally decided that it would be simpler and more pleasant to just book a private tour with TerraDiversa. What a good decision! Our guide Genero (I hope I go that right) brought us on a perfect hike and modified the usual Cajas trip to show us routes and things we had not seen before. He was a great companion and again a font of knowledge. Our Cajas guides knew the names and habits of every bird and plant we saw. Genero was an experienced hiking and camping guide and inspired us to return another time to Ecuador including a longer backpacking trip in Cajas. The guides were great. I'd be remiss not to mention the personal service we had from Andres Hurtado in the TerraDiversa office. He helped set up all the trips and also provided advice on a number of issues around Cuenca. He checked in multiple times to make sure I was happy with the services they provided. When we left a coat in one of the vehicles he made sure we got it back. This sort of service and personal attention makes TerraDiversa a great guide service and I highly recommend the company and their great people.

We booked a Galapagos cruise for our family of 4 through TerraDiversa. It was absolutely magical. They were able to find us a “last minute deal” a month in advance that was less expensive - but longer - than what we found advertised online. We really had no idea what the options were for cruise length, ship size, islands, excursions, or anything else. So we just put ourselves in TD’s hands and they delivered an experience that was more than we could have imagined or hoped for!

We had a great time with Christian birding in Cajas. We enjoyed his knowledge of the birds, plants, local history, and culture. He also appreciated his focus on ensuring that we each got good looks of the birds rather than simply checking lists quickly and moving on. The trout lunch at a local restaurant was also great.
