From Calle Larga you get One view of all of these very nice picturesque old buildings. The view from the river offers a completely different view of the same buildings. There is a nice Riverwalk so that you may enjoy the whole neighborhood. There are bicycles free on Sundays.

My friend and I stayed at the Hostel del Barranco on Calle Large earlier this month for 4 nights. It has an easygoing ambiance and the manager, Diego, was extremely helpful and full of recommendations for whatever activity we were interested in pursuing. The best rooms look out over the Tomebamba River and some have private balconies. There is a wonderful breakfast area which overlooks the river and a balcony that is open for all guests. The view is astounding.

A wonderful way to see some of Cuenca’s impressive architecture as numerous buildings (and former mansions) cling to the hillside that is adjacent to El Barranco. There is a lovely paved pathway that runs alongside the river. Grassy areas and ample seating/benches make an afternoon picnic a great option. Several cafes and restaurants are within meters of this riverfront path - many offer lovely views of the river and surrounding countryside.

A great place to explore from either side of the river -- I can't imagine "seeing" Cuenca without walking up and down the neighboring streets, looking at the "barranco."

The Tamebamba is one of the four rivers that run through Cuenca, and the most noticeable. Separating the colonial section from the newer part of town, the runs swiftly along at the foot of a steep cliff (or barranco) on the north bank. At the foot of the barranco lies a pedestrian way that is a pleasant strolling place to enjoy the water, see the occasional bird, watch people sitting or strolling, and just enjoy the day. Several hotels and restaurants are perched along Calle Larga along the top of the barranco.
