4-Day Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve Adventure

Explore one of the most mystical and wonderful regions of the world: The rainforest of South America. Around 2% of the Amazon rainforest is found in the foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes, a place that is better known as the ‘Oriente’, but it has a third of all existing Amazonian biodiversity. The Cuyabeno wildlife reserve protects around 603,380 hectares, which are located close to the Equatorial line, in the northeastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. In the reserve there are more than 500 different species of colorful birds that range from small hummingbirds to majestic harpy eagle.Within one hectare of this place you can find 240 different species of plants and many of them are used for medicinal purposes. Jaguars, monkeys, anteaters, sloths, river dolphins (Iniageoffrensis and Sotaliafluviatilis), manatees and armadillos, are just some of the mammals that live in the reserve.

Let me start by saying I heard two other guests on the ship agree the food was amazing, so clearly it depends on expectations. But I expect more from a boat promoted as deluxe (and charging for it!) We had just come off a scuba cruise with superb food, so it wasn't the location that limited the menu. Besides, the location is South America! Home of tropical fruit -- but at two meals we were given *canned* peaches and I'm pretty sure the fruit salad was mass produced in a factory somewhere. C'mon. At another meal, we were offered instant mashed potatoes. I didn't know they still existed. The only interesting thing was the daily fish but it was served with identical sauce every day. Bottom line, the food was consistently bland and unimaginative. By contrast, we greatly enjoyed the tours; the national park naturalist was excellent.

We booked weeks in advance. Got fitted for snorkel gear the day before in their office off main street. Told to be at the dock at 6:20am and breakfast and towels would be provided. We arrived at 6:20am (wife, me, two kids) only to be held up an hour while the captain and the government guide fished for more people to load on the boat. Boat was Valeria. Small. Wet. We were crammed on. No one got breakfast - we figured out later the staff gave us breakfast to everyone as the afternoon snack. Our four towels turned into one towel per family. The two hour boat ride to Punta Pitt was choppy and both ways the captain (who didn't speak to anyone) was on his cell phone while driving the boat (I have two pictures of him doing this)). He used an Apple app to guide the boat along the coast because he could not see out the windshield due to the swells. Local naturalist guide (lenin) brought his daughter on the trip with us also. When we got to Punta Pitt the wind was strong and we were dropped for snorkeling in six foot swells around the rock opposite the bay. when we asked Lenin why we cannot snorkel in the bay near shore he said "you'll see more". Well we didn't - but some folks got out fast due to the waves and current. Another got pushed dangerously close to the rocks. When we finally left it felt like this was something that likely should not have happened but they needed to get paid and the tourists were going to see fish by golly. Overall this boat, this company seems more focused on profit than safety and positive experience. There are lots of tour companies in town - do not use this one ever.

It was great just to take a day to go there in a tour. The fact that I did not have to drive to the springs allowed me to enjoy the panorama along the route. It was impressive to see the difference in temperature at the point of "La Virgen", and then go down to the hot springs. While being there it was sooo relaxing that I almost fall asleep in the pool (Luckily it was not deep lol) I would highly recommend you to travel with EGT, the guide was kind and knowledgeable. Also, punctuality was one of the main characteristics of the service I received. I would definitely recommend anyone to contact this team. Ah! just in case bring a warm jacket with you as temperature may vary during the trip.
