We visited here while checking out the botanical gardens which are in the park. We spent a couple of hours walking around. There are food booths with all kinds of foods and desserts as well as vendors selling toys and other items. There is a lagoon with paddle boats for rent and a rock climbing structure which was fun. Lots of paths, bathrooms, and grassy spots to picnic and relax. A quick $3 taxi ride from Old Town Quito.

We went, as recommended, on a Sunday. It really bowled us over and made us wish we were there as a family with young kids. It's a lovely, gentle family place, with so much for the kids to do at not too much expense. A real paradise, where everyone got along! I saw very few tears, and even the many unleashed dogs all seemed to be getting along with each other with no barking.

The park covers acres, far too much for us oldies to explore. We were even pushed to get around all the food stalls and decide what to have for lunch. As foreigners, the food was seriously weird, but we ordered what seemed to be a bit of everything and took enormously loaded paper plates onto the grass to eat our food with a plastic fork. I wouldn't say we loved it all, but there was lots we did love and we were definitely full -- and all for some ludicrously small amount of money. We had ice creams too, and I had a candy floss.

There were pedal boats, kids playgrounds, kids powered cars to drive around in, pony rides, bouncy castles, bubbles big and small, and so much more. On top of that there were museums and gardens to visit, some with a small extra cost. There was also a big market area.

I wish it would come to my home town!

Until 1939 this park was farmland. Now it is a large park with many sports facilities among them a running track with a small statue of Jefferson Perez, Ecuador's (only) Olympic gold winner in 1996 (20km walk event). Probably more Ecuadorians like the paddleboat rental option at a circular canal in the southern part of the park and of course visits to the snake house or botanical garden in the center of the park. More serious sports are practised in the nothern section (soccer, volley and basket ball, athletics).

Personally I liked the running and cycling opportunities.

This large park is, obviously, heavily used, and it shows. We got off the hop on/off and walked through the park to the botanical gardens. It’s a nice walk, with jogging trails, biking, green areas, a lagoon, and just about every outdoor activity available to the residents. The problem being, there are over 2 million residents of Quito, so this popular park feels over-wrought.

Nice park to go for a stroll any time of the day.

It's much bigger than you would expect in a first glance.

It has kids parks, basketball, soccer, tennis courts, weird art, a little pond with pedal boats, a botanical garden, a big running track, bike paths, a skate park, a dirty bike park and much more.

Bathrooms are available in lots of places and it feels pretty secure.

If you are a runner, this park offers many paths, so you wont get bored.

This green oasis in the middle of this explosively expanded capital city... is a true beauty to visit. Let's be real, tho: there are not fancy attractions or exquisite landmarks, however there's no local person that would not feel attracted to this park. Not a tourist attraction by no means, however just a resilient green spot amidst the financial and commercial buildings in the surroundings.

Fantastic huge park in the middle of Quito. Spent hair a day and didn't see it all. Here for 11 days so breaking it up. Beautiful space, people exercising, yoga, a running track, soccer, a lazy river with paddle boats to rent, you name it. Food vender around the place as well as water and frozen treats. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Located in Parque Carolina, the "Central Park" of Quito in the wealthy part of town, the Quito Botanical Garden is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two. It features plants from all ecological regions of Ecuador and is laid out by ecological region. It features 2 green houses devoted to orchids ( Ecuador has 100's of species of orchids native to it), a beautiful pond, an ethnobotony exhibit and a nice spot to get coffee and a bite to eat.

I have a special interest in Botanical Gardens so I always try to visit them and this is a very nice one. I was a bit hesitant because we I saw no mention of it in Frommer's, Rough Guide or on Trip Advisor. We found it on a local Quito website. My hesitation was completely unfounded. This site should be included in all the guide books. We have been in Quito for 4 days and this is definitely a highlight. So if you have any interest in plants or would just like to have a nice stroll in a lovely leafy location with giant tree ferns, colorful flowers and a babbling brook running through it - check it out.

The botanic garden is a very nice place in an otherwise rather crowded city. The fee for adults is $3.50 and they open at 9 am. The place was very clean and it is very well designed with nice paths that take you through different habitats such as the paramos (high elevation), dry areas with cacti etc. The people that put together this garden got advised from the Missouri Botanic Gardens for the landscaping. It is not as nice as visiting the different types of habitats in the wild, but for a city location we thought the gardens were well put together. We have visited many botanic gardens in Latin America, the US and some in Africa and this one although not very large is very nice. There is a small shop that is only not open on Mondays. There are plans for a restaurant in the future. There is a fair amount of information about the different areas you are in, but they are all in Spanish. Spanish is my native language so I had no problem reading everything, but for those who don't they may miss some of the useful info. In spite of this detail I would still visit this place even if I did not read Spanish. There were many types of flowers and some interesting birds as well.
On the third Sunday of the month they have an organic fair with miscellaneous vegetables, plants and crafts for sale. I have to also mention that their bathrooms were some of the nicer I have seen in my numerous travels. Very clean
We spent 2 hours and took many photos. In general I would return if I were in Quito and I recommend it.

La Carolina Park is a popular site for everyone in Quito, to work out, jogg, rent a small boat in the artificial lake etc, there is a hidden jewel inside: The Botanical Garden. It is worth entering (small fee), as you forget you are in a capital City. Fantastic natural setting, extremely peaceful, great birding (hummingbirds, tanagers, siskins etc). a must see: the extraordinary orchid gardens and the butterfly facility!
