Metropolitan Touring took great care of us from start to finish for our first post-COVID overseas vacation. Our family of 4 (parents and 2 teenagers) booked the 5 day western tour of the Galapagos Islands aboard the Isabella II. During months of planning, Melissa Altamirano answered every question about safety precautions, entry requirements, packing lists, etc. From the moment we set foot in Ecuador, we had support from Metropolitan Touring either in person or by text. The Isabella II is one of the smaller ships with a maximum of 40 guests. The first night we definitely felt the waves, but we soon got used to it. If you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to choose a bigger ship. For us, it was worth it to have less than 10 guests per guide on every outing. The itinerary was packed with activities, but there were always options. Instead of snorkeling, you could go on a glass bottom boat. Instead of hiking, you could hang out on the beach. Because of all the activities, I would not recommend this trip for small children. The friendly staff on the Isabella II went above and beyond to make sure everyone was happy. When a snorkeling trip turned out to have bad visibility, they took us to another location where the water was clear and we swam with sea lions, marine iguanas, and sea turtles! The food was excellent with options for everyone and the cabins were comfortable. Throughout the trip, the guides took photos, even underwater, and they gave us all their amazing digital photos at the end of the trip. Metropolitan Touring even arranged for our required COVID test to be administered at our hotel the day before we returned to the US. The Galapagos Islands was always on our bucket list, and Metropolitan Touring took care of every detail to make sure it was the trip of a lifetime.

We worked with Diego Zapata at Metropolitan to create a custom trip to Quito, the Galapagos and Mashpi Lodge. It was incredible. One of the best trips we've ever taken as a family.
It took a lot of planning and we tend to be particular but Diego made adjustment after adjustment until we were happy - I think we did 5 or 6 versions of the itinerary before we finally settled on the final. Diego was extremely helpful.
Once we took the trip it was even better. Just an amazing time. I would highly recommend using Metropolitan Travel for any trip to Ecuador and/or the Galapagos. I'm not even sure we could've done it without them!

I was searching for adventures in Cotopaxi for our family of 5 when I stumbled upon Metropolitan Touring. I called and was so lucky to have Melissa answer the phone. What started out as planning a day trip, resulted in Melissa planning a month-long vacation for us in Ecuador, one of the best vacations of our lives. Melissa was able to turn our wishes into reality. In Ecuador, we toured Quito, wove in Otavalo, biked, hiked, enjoyed cooking classes, and stayed in the most amazing hotels and haciendas. Every detail was taken care of and our drivers and tour guides always showed up early. We toured for four days with Monica and our driver Eduardo and they quickly became friends ( we even played "cuarenta" with them). Ecuador is a beautiful country, which diverse ecosystems and I am so glad our family was able to enjoy it to the fullest with Metropolitan Touring. We will recommend this hidden gem of a country to all our friends and tell them to contact Melissa to plan their trip. My only regret is that Melissa cannot plan trips for us to Asia and beyond, because I know that any trip Melissa planned would be perfect for us.

I travelled on a 5 day Galapagos cruise on Yacht La Pinta which is owned/operated by these people and it was an expensive and terrible experience leaving me feeling like I was robbed. According to statements made to me by La Pinta crew members, Metropolitan decided to fill my cruise to beyond capacity by deep discounting to the domestic family market so the boat was absolutely packed with screaming young children; the real problem was shore excursions and wildlife viewing (the entire point of going to the Galapagos) as Metropolitan didn’t staff the boat with sufficient naturalists/guides so that every excursion was dominated by the needs of 4-8 year old children in every single group. So instead of seeing wildlife, everyone moved at the glacial pace dictated by small children being tired, crying, needing to be carried, stopping every 20 feet. Guides were overwhelmed and minimal-to-zero English language guidance was provided. Unacceptable/unconscionable management to dispatch a cruise like this without sufficient staff.

Dear Eric,
We thank you for taking the time to write your review. Please know that we value your feedback.
In response to your observations, we would like to note, firstly, that Yacht La Pinta’s total capacity is 48 guests. However, to ensure greater social distancing on board and keep everyone as safe as possible, we are currently operating with a temporary maximum capacity of 36 guests, which is the number of passengers that were aboard our departure on April 26th. In this sense, we did not go “beyond capacity”. Compliance is a cornerstone of our business, and we have a long history of working side-by-side with regulatory agencies in the Galapagos. If you felt that La Pinta was unusually full, we assure you, we were at our reduced capacity and did not exceed it.
Regarding our excursions to explore different shorelines, you correctly noted that these are a key aspect of the Galapagos experience. The Galapagos National Park regulations state that the maximum number of guests per guide is 16. On your expedition cruise, there was a total of five guides, which accounts for a ratio of 7.2 guests per guide—less than half the group size permitted. Very few vessels operating in the archipelago can claim such a low ratio, one which thankfully helps to enrich wildlife interpretation. In particular, we have reviewed our logs and can confirm that your group consisted of yourself plus five other adults.
Your specific expedition had a higher number of children aboard than is usual for our vessels. We believe this is due in part to an increased demand from families looking to share memorable experiences together in a safe and controlled environment.
As a company, we cherish the opportunity to host families as they explore the wonders of the Galapagos and we relish the opportunity to inspire young minds. The way a child behaves is ultimately the responsibility of their parents. We are saddened to hear that the enjoyment of your experience aboard our ship was affected by this factor.
While it can be challenging to guarantee that every passenger has the time of their lives, we do strive to accommodate our guests’ interests, no matter their age, passions, and physical abilities. We are deeply sorry that your experience with us did not live up to your expectations.
We have been in communication with the travel agency through which you booked your cruise and will be glad to discuss any further matters through them.
We wish you well and we thank you for traveling aboard Yacht La Pinta.
Regards,
Metropolitan Touring

I booked a stay at Mashpi Lodge with Metropolitan Touring and it was the WORST customer service I have ever receive for the most money I have ever spent. Their agent did not respond for days at a time, she sent me documents that I needed to sign with incorrect information, she did not confirm my large payment was received after asking 2 times, she did not answer the questions I asked her. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service. Do not booked through Metropolitan Touring but instead with the lodges themselves. A shame for the lodges as they will lose many customers because of the awful agents at Metropolitan Touring.

Maria was the quarterback and executed the plan for a two week exploration of Galapagos and Ecuador's Amazon with exceptional support from all departments. She created a customized adventure based on our preferences for two countries; Ecuador and Peru. In Peru, the primary POC was Paulo. Paulo ensured no detail was missed and that we were comfortable and enjoyed the transit to see cultural activities.
Both provided excellent coordination of required travel between air, car, bus, pier and train to include hotels, guides and activities. Yes, we used all modes of transportations. :-)
When it came to our many special requests, no was not in their vocabulary.
From our very first inquiry, Maria provided a high level of support via email and phone conversations. Maria was especially craftfull at our last minute requests to extend our trip. Maria coordinated special arrangements, even while we were sailing, to meet our desires of experiencing additional sights. She also arranged a representative to be at every point to share in-depth knowledge of the fauna and flora.
As experienced travelers, they exceeded all our expectations.

Santa Cruz II 4 day tour - Northern Islands
The whole tour was outstanding. There were 9 of us - grandparents, kids and grandkids. Everyone had a great time - seeing the animals and snorkeling. The food on the boat was delicious and satisfied the kids, vegetarians and meat eaters.
I was very impressed to learn that Metropolitan Touring is carbon neutral by supporting a reserve that protects forest, biodiversity and migration corridors. On the ship they made careful use of resources and provided recycling containers. They evaluate technology improvements that reduce emissions as it becomes available.

My husband and I started looking at a trip to the Galapagos in 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and found our way to Metropolitan Touring. We started working with their coordinators and went back and forth over email and phone over several months to customize a special tour of the Galapagos and Ecuador. We ended up with a 12 day visit, that was supposed to take place in Sept 2020. Due to the pandemic, we ended up delaying our trip for a year to Sept 2021. We started with a 7 day/6 night cruise of the Western Galapagos on La Pinta. What an exceptional experience. La Pinta Yacht staff were without exception friendly, happy, and accommodating. Top notch service. Their naturalists (3 for 20 guests) were exceptionally knowledgeable about the natural history of the Galapagos. We were pampered with gourmet food and support with lots of information and adventures. After the Galapagos we made our way to the Mashpi Lodge with a private transfer and a guide of the middle of the world monument on the Equator and a archeological stop at Tulipe. Mashpi Lodge was also magical, with, again, top notch naturalist and exceptional staff and gourmet dining. Such a unique and precious location. After 2 days in Mashpi we made our way back to Quito and Casa Gangotena - a boutique hotel in Quito's old town. Again, excellent excellent staff and service, gourmet food, and guided tours. We highly recommend Metropolitan for your South American adventure without reservation.

We have been working for months and now for years with travelers that had to postpone their trip due to the pandemic. Still, it is very gratifying to know you still trusted us, and still wanted to explore the world after all travel activitites were put on hold.
Comments like yours, motivate us to keep working hard, and knowing that you are enjoying our country is the greatest satisfaction of all. We will make sure all people involved in your trip, from La Pinta, Mashpi and Casa Gangotena receive this great comment as well.
Thank you again for choosing Metropolitan Touring for your once in a lifetime trip to Ecuador.

I rated this cruise excellent because of the caring, friendly yet professional staff. Our family booked 4 cabins midship. The rooms were very nice & larger than we expected. My only complaint was that we couldn’t get the rooms to cool down below 22-23 C, warm for sleeping.
The itinerary was incredible & extremely well planned. We had multiple off board activities daily & participated in all of them.
I would recommend this cruise to anyone except very young (under 5) & infirm. The hikes often involved walking on rough lava, rocks, hills & sand. If children are going & plan to snorkel, have them practise using a snorkel & face mask before the trip.
If you like wildlife, the beautiful, pristine landscape, both in & out of the water, is teeming with wildlife.
The guides clearly love these fantastic islands themselves & were both enthusiastic & patient with the boys. Our three grandsons, aged 8, 9 & 10 learned more in a week on LaPinta than they could have learned in several weeks in a classroom!

Interested to read your review as we are plannning the same trip. Quick questions if you know -
- is it easy to 'opt out' of walking elements of trips and just stay on short?
- if you go on the glass bottom boat trips do they start and finish on the ship?
- did you get your travel information well in advance?
Many thanks

Headed out to La Pinta this month; we understand tap water isn't potable on mainland Ecuador. Was the water on the boat safe to drink? Did anyone get sick from it/should we bring a filtering device? Thank you!

Dear guest,
Red-carpet treatment is waiting for you on board Yacht La Pinta. Glad you can join us at a really good time of the year for exploring Galapagos.
Our expedition vessel produces fresh water after desalinating sea water; thus, there is a constant supply of it. For purification purposes, our water goes through reverse osmosis before it goes out to our overall shipboard distribution system. This is the fresh water we use for showers, sinks, etc. Crew members safely drink this water, as their physiology is well accustomed to it. For our guests, we have located in several public areas of the vessel special water stations that carry an additional level of filtering, in order to make it fully drinkable. This is the water we recommend for drinking, and guests take their reusable water bottles (provided on board) to this station prior to their outings, and also for night drinking, etc. All water used for ice makers, kitchen, bar, dining room, etc, is the same filtered water used at those refilling stations. Therefore, you will be absolutely fine on board. We suggest you exert precautionary measures during other instances of your trip in South America, as the few cases of stomach-related issues on board have initiated at other locations, but on board. The good news on this is that, as part of an expedition vessel structure, Yacht La Pinta has an M.D. Officer on board who is available 24/7 to our guests. This feature is NOT available on board any one-guide tour boat. If any discomfort and/or specific medical attention is needed our Doctor will be more than glad to be consulted. We wish you a fantastic voyage, and look forward at welcoming you on board soon. Please let us know if you need any additional information from our end in preparation for your Galapagos expedition.
Fair winds, fair weather,

Dear Nanci,
You will always have time after a wer landing to change out of your sandals into a pair of sneakers. Sneakers will always be better to walk during the expeditions. However, our guides will always explain to you the appropriate shoes for each day.

Internet connections onboard consist in computer stations and wifi in the vessel’s social areas; due to the Galapagos’ remote location, internet connections are intermittent and low-bandwidth. The rate is $44.80 (taxes included) for 5 or 6 day expeditions (subject to changes).
Best wishes,
