About
"There’s a reason the South American Andes is spoken about with awe, and the cone of Ecuador’s Cotopaxi volcano is the icing on this mountainous hunk of cake. Scraping the sky at more than 5800 metres above sea level, the stratovolcano is currently snoozing after chucking a tantrum in late 2015, when it spat smoke and ash into the air. Rug up for altitude and thunder down its foothills on a 30-kilometre cycling trip with Biking Dutchman Tours. A back-up vehicle will carry you up high, where you’ll swing onto the saddle of a 21-speed mountain bike and head off-road, winding through ancient lava fields and past wild horses grazing in grassy plains studded with wildflowers. Stop at Incan ruins, enjoy a homemade picnic lunch, and spot the snowy giant reflected on the surface of Limpiopungo Lake... " GET LOST MAGAZINE

We took the 4 day/ 3 night bike tour with the Biking Dutchman at the end of September. Our guide was the energetic and entertaining Roberto. The bikes were great quality and the organization and details of the trip were well planned and executed. We were only 2 of us on our tour with Roberto as our support vehicle driver and tour guide. We found the tour to be an amazing adventure and wonderful exposure to the beautiful country of Ecuador. The majority of riding is downhill so not overly physically taxing, but some level of fitness and biking experience is required. It iis also worth noting that Roberto is extremely flexible to ensure you get what you hope to out of the riding experience. For example we could have done more riding uphill or more challenging single track, but opted to keep our tour at a “vacation friendly pace” with enough challenge to feel we earned our lunch breaks! The experience of riding in one day from essentially the snow line of Chimborazo down to the amazon basin was truly one of the most spectacular days of travel we have ever experienced. We would highly recommend a multi day tour with the Biking Dutchman to any individuals looking for a fantastic view of some the of the highlights of Ecuador with some fitness challenge tossed in.

Our 2 day biking tour to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa was without a doubt, the highlight of our trip to Ecuador!

Jorge, our guide, had a genuine love for the mountains and biking that mixed with a sense of fun and cameraderie. It felt just like a movie as we rode across the Paramo (grasslands) at the base of Cotopaxi with sunlight streaming over our backs and Incan ruins at our sides.

Gregorio, our multitalented driver/cook/photographer/DJ (!) kept us on the straight and narrow through the mountains with some great driving skills, and kept us energized with delicious foods (including great vegetarian options).

If you're lucky (as we were), the clouds will open up for amazing views of the mountaintop, and crater at Quilotoa.

Our Quilotoa hotel was clean and comfortable with SUPER blankets that kept us toasty on a cold winter night. Breakfast was among our best in Ecuador!

Lots of downhill runs (which can be bumpy) led us to more than a few amazing viewpoints. You'll have a great time.

First of all, I want to apologize for the belated reply. I could make up an excuse, but it seems pointless. Your description is so nicely written, like poetry. I hope it makes many more want to come to enjoy this small Andean country, tucked amidst volcanoes and jungle. We have been blessed with exhuberant forest, volcanoes (both dormant and not) Sometimes it is hard to cope with the changes and strikes, but when calm returns, we always feel blessed and renew our love to our country and it's people.

We went on a private biking tour through the Antisana and it was amazing!!! Not only that Jan and Ana are amazing tour guides who know the best spots around but they truly care about making you have an awesome experience. The bikes were the best I have ever used and made the bike tour through the most beautiful places but also through the very high mountains much easier (we still ended tired but it was 100% worth it). We even made a picnic in the middle of the nature surrounded by condors - I’m certainly taking away amazing memories from this tour and can only recommend it to anyone!!

Dear Laura I don't know if it was you, or me, who brought the amazing energy; perhaps more a synergy of both. But the truth is: there was a truly amazing liveliness that surrounded us. I have never seen so much wildlife and so close by. Deers, condors, rabbits, ducks, other birds, wild horses, lamas (or were they alpacas?) running or flying away freely made up for an unforgettable adventure. To have lunch while witnessing the majestic flight of two condors is something I will tell my grandchildren about. Those memories will be in my heart and mind for a long time! We have rated Antisana Easy, nevertheless those uphills got harder by the minute, didn’t they? Thanks for your kind review and I hope to see you in the near future

We feel like our biking guides allowed us to see a part of Ecuador that we would never had an opportunity to see! They not only provided great equipment, lunch, and service but they also gave us information about local flora, geology, and culture. Patricio, our driver, provided us with homemade delicious lunches and even scared off some aggressive dogs along one route.
Our biking guides Roberto and Beto were outstanding bikers and tour guides!

First of all, let me tell you that if I would have seen this before, I would have said THANK YOU a while ago! I am thrilled that you feel that way and appreciate that you are spreading the word: the BIKING DUTCHMAN tours are a great opportunity "to see a part of Ecuador that you would never had an opportunity to see". It is precesily that feature of our trips that we'd like to highlight: they are not "just" some biking tours, our guides will show you the best or our beautiful and varied country. Thank you again for choosing the BIKING DUTCHMAN. Last but not least, we appreciate very much that you took the time to write this awesome review.

We went on a 4-days tour and absolutely loved every second of it! The team was able to put up a trip for us in less than 48hrs and delivered the best value for money we could hope for. Highly recommend. The biking level is accessible and is not the only activity of the trip. There is also a lot of different cultural activities and quite some shuttling time if you're going to the Amazonas as well :) Thank you to all the team!

We found the Biking Dutchman on line, decided it ws for us. We booked into the 5 day tour. Oh my, this was an amazing experience. We could choose the level of accommodation we required, (we choose the upper level for a small extrs fee ). The bikes provided were excellent quality, our guide, Jorge was very impressive. His knowledge of Ecuador was outstanding. He was fun to be around. Our driver, Patricio, a fantastic driver, also fun and helpful. We were lucky to have Mateo, along with us, from the head office as well. He was extremly attentive, caring, professional and helpful. All three staff were really fun to hang around with. The scenary was stunning, Dont worry if you cant speak Spanish, Both Jorge and Mateo, spoke fluent English. I throughly recommend ths trip, you wont be disappointed, its an amazing way to see the beautiful Ecuadorian countryside.

This is the very best bicycling tour I've ever taken. We took a 2-day Cotopaxi/Chimborazo trip. The locations were stunning. The opportunity to get high up on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo volcanoes to observe the glaciers was excellent in itself, but then the cycling down each mountain was just amazing, traveling from the treeless paramo to the forest and farms below. Descending from 5000 meters to 2800 meters on a mountain bike is exhilarating and fun. We had a chance to visit an Inca archeological site along the way, too. Our guide, Jorge, was excellent, and our driver Patto, too! Highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves nature, mountain biking, mountain scenery and breathtaking descents on paths and roads.

We had a great time on our one day trip to the Papallacta Hot Springs. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was just us and our guide, who is the founder of the company. Communication with them was great, we were picked up right on time, and had a pleasant time chatting the whole way to our starting point. The bikes were nice and instructions were very clear. The support vehicle was always nearby and met us at different points. We were told to take our time and feel free to stop for as many photo ops as we wanted. We never felt rushed and he was open to schedule adaptations based on what we wanted. Lunch was a homemade picnic and absolutely delicious. Never a dull minute and by far our favorite day on our trip to Quito. Will be booking one of their multi day trips in the future.

Oh my... it's been already a couple of weeks since you did this trip and wrote this amazing post. WE ARE SO SORRY that it hasn't been replied. Thank you so much for your kind words, for the appreciation of our work, but particularly for your promise of returning soon! We are so pleased to hear that we provided a trip so memorable and fun, that can be considered the favorite day of your trip. Amazing and you make us feel strong and capable of withstanding this storm called COVID. When this is over, we are confident that tourists will visit Ecuador and that the BIKING DUTCHMAN will remain a favorite!

We had an amazing two days with biking dutchman. Moutainbiking down the volcanos of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo was an experience to never forget. The other activities in the two days were also fantastic. We slept in the cozy village Salinos and stopped coincidentially by a rodeo competition. We feel like we saw the real Ecuador this way. Our guide Roberto, with the nice company of Amalia, was wonderfull. He told us a lot about Ecuador and the places that we visited and he just was really charming.
The only downside about our trip, was that we did not book more days. These two days were the highlight of our trip so far.

We saw a lot of stunning nature and Roberto (our guide) and Patricio (our driver/DJ/cook/ bike maintenance guy :)) were doing all they could to make this trip amazing. Many thanks! Lunch was always done in beautiful settings and was superdelicious. The bike rides were beautiful! Small room for improvement would be the choice of hotel for the first night (it was veeery cold in the room) + more detailed instructions before hopping on the bikes for the first time. In general we highly recommend the tour, we really got to see the beauty of Ecuador in a very cool and unique way!

Dear Henriette I read your review with much attention and I want to thank you for pointing out the faults, yet giving us a 5 stars review!!! You are right: There is always room for imporovement, as you so nicely put it and we will continue to search for a better alternative for you to have a more enjoyable experience I will also address -once more- the issue about the Safety talk with our guides. Thanks for pointing it out.
