About
It is the last great project created by Oswaldo Guayasamín "Painter of Ibero-America". It is a space that invites the reflection of history from the point of view of Latin America, -from Mexico to Patagonia-, from ancient cultures to contemporary miscegenation. A point of reference for the whole world to look at the past and project ourselves into the future. The Chapel of the Man (La Capilla del Hombre) is part of the 4 cultural places of Guayasamin Foundation (Fundación Guayasamín) that you can visit with the same entrance fee: *"Casa Museo Guayasamín"(Guayasamín House Museum), , *“Sala Maruja Monteverde” (Maruja Monteverde Temporary exhibition room), *"La Capilla Del Hombre"(the Chapel of the Man), and *"Sitio Arqueológico y Parque De Las Culturas" (Archaeological Site and Park of Cultures).

If your staying in Old Town pay to take a taxi ... the Museum and home of Oswaldo Guayasamín are totally worth the trip plus you will have the bonus of seeing other parts of the city! Watching the video of Guayasamin create a portrait of a renown guitarist was mesmerizing to watch and to hear Guayasamin himself explain his process as he creates was remarkable! Both exhibits are interconnected in my minds eye ... go, just go ... see the museum, see the house, so very worth it!!

Easy to get with Uber. $10.00 for museum entrance fee, you can ask for a guide in English or Spanish for tips. You also get a guided tour to his house. If you're into arts, you must visit. His pictures depict the hard life the indigenous people experience, and you can feel the emotions eminating from the eyes of the mother, the child, the old man... There is a mural with his pictures with world leaders from Khrutchev to Franco to the Pope....There is a shop at the end, and you can buy his own designer jewelries made of silver and a native stone. Very chic and affordable. Just leave before 4:30 pm, or you'rin traffic traffic.

We were recommended to visit this place by our tour guide. If you are interested in South American culture and contemporary art forms , do not miss this and the adjacent house. The art if quite sombre, especially in the chapel - but that’s in many ways the point.

This museum/house tour was not for me. Maybe it is excellent for others, but I just had to escape the tour group and sit outside.

Our guide was utterly obsessed with the artist, if you aren't also obsessed by him or by art in general, this may not be the place for you. The tour is still going on as he is pointing out every single detail. "Here is a piano that Guayasamin bought, he couldn't play the piano but he liked music", "here is a chair that he designed, when he had guests they sat on these chairs". That sort of information.

You aren't allowed to look at things at your own pace. I feel sorry for those still inside. The entrance fee makes this the most expensive museum I have been to in Ecuador.

On a positive note, the view of Quito is very nice from up here. The view is free.

The capilla, which is on the same grounds as the Casa Museo Guayasamin, is stunning. I was not familiar with the artist Oswaldo Guayasamin before hearing about this place from other travelers. There are guided tours given in the capilla and also in the museum, which are included with the price of the ticket. The whole experience was impressive and made me a fan!

By pure coincidence we were able to join the English tour shortly after we arrived. I knew nothing about Guayasamin but my husband knew of him after seeing his works in Berlin decades ago. Having the English tour really helped us appreciate his works. Our college age/recent college graduate children accompanied us and we all appreciated the art and the message. The artwork can be disturbing so this museum isn't for everyone.

Definitely worth while! Take a cab to get there as the climb is steep. The view of Quito from the museum is absolutely breathtaking. Admission included Casa Museo Guayasamin--his home and workshop. Cabs for your return trip to the hotel located two blocks downhill from the museum.

I would say this is a must visit place if you're in Quito. It's unique, beautiful, and provides a perspective in Ecuador, not just its art. If I had to choose, I would visit La Capilla Del Hombre over the old town churches and cathedrals. Old Town is great, but you can see , and probably have seen, similar elaborate and beautiful Catholic edifices. La Capilla is unique.

MUST see if you are an art lover, like me! I am so grateful we went to this amazing museum and wished I had more time there. The Capilla del Hombre’s size and scale is impressive and very deceiving from the outside. However, once inside the art just envelopes you with its sheer size, emotion, and vibrant colors.

Make sure you take the 40+minute tour of the home/museum, too. Guayasamin’s comprehensive art collection is equally impressive, and I loved that he had the forsight to ensure all his art was kept in Ecuador and for the people of Ecuador.

This museum, featuring the work of Ecuador's premier artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin is a real gem. The building is interesting as is his art. We had a tour of the museum and also booked a tour of his nearby home. I'd never heard of him and was impressed at his oeuvre.

We were brought by our guide in Quito but I could tell that it wouldn't have been an easy place to get to on our own.

Expensive in Ecuador at 10$ per person. You can’t enter the house museum without a guide. So you are guided around in a big group and not allowed to venture too far. But seeing the studio was cool. The capilla is impressive, big, and without a lot of explanation.
