It is easily accessible by trolley at the cost of $0.25. If you are over 65 years old the ticket costs $0.12.
Buses mainly go to the southern part of Ecuador. Very affordable bus tickets, e.i. a ticket to Banos: $2.50 one way.
No credit cards accepted.

Quito was a good trip, though the city is very spread out. Prepare to spend a lot of time on a bus. Getting to the south bus terminal is a long bus ride but very easy to get to. Great city, cheap food, take it easy for the first couple of days because of altitude.

I'm giving the Terminal itself a good rating because it is pretty nice and organized but the experience of being robbed is not pleasant.

Normally I am hyper aware and cautious but a well dressed Ecuadorian man struck up conversation with me in broken English.

My wife and I were taking the bus from Quito to Baños. While this man showed me videos and talked my ear off his partner removed cash and a laptop from me without me noticing!! It was actually quite impressive. When I grabbed my bag he became nervous but I didn't think about it until later.

When I got to the hostal I realized what had happened but it was too late. Beware of overly-friendly people and never take your bag off of your lap.
Attached is a picture of the thief.

I ready a number of websites about how to get this bus, and they were all at least a little misleading. Here is what to do. I caught one of those long double buses right off the Grande Plaza on Avenida Guayaquil (some go straight there apparently) but I had to transfer to another bus at a transfer point about halfway where you do not have to spend another $0.25 just speak a little Spanish and someone will show you where to go and which line to get in. Make sure the front of the buses say Quintumbe and are going South. It takes about an hour all told to get there. The airport website says it is the COSIBO Collectivo line. It is not. Nobody in the terminal knew what I was talking about with that word. You do NOT have to go into the terminal. There are three platforms for the city buses outside the terminal. Go the very front of the middle platform and look to the left for the green city bus, where there is a sign for the airport and the last city on the line----look for and/or ask for the "Tababela" bus. Another hour ride way out through the far flung barrios of Quito and you are at the airport. Be there well before 7pm to catch the bus at Quitumbe Terminal Terrestre or the taxi drivers will charge you $30. Likewise, ask for that green bus at ground transport at the airport or the taxi will be $25-$30 (I arrived on New Years Eve after 9pm and it was pouring rain and paid the freight going into the city, stupidly relying on a 10 year old Lonely Planet guidebook, and the new airport is just a few years old and way way out of the city. I was also at the Rio Coca Terminal on the north side of the city going somewhere else on a different day and the information/securidad lady had no idea of the bus to the airport and suggested that I go to the old airport an hour away to catch another city bus to the new airport!) If you have an eye for adventure and know how to read a map I suggest you carry a bunch of quarters and the city buses will take you all over this huge sprawling metropolis.

I went to this terminal to catch a bus to Banos. This place is modern and pretty easy to navigate. The tourist office was closed, which was disappointing. There is a charge to use the restrooms but they are clean. I only had one person bother me, but it's a bus station so it's best to watch your things all of the time. I never felt unsafe here and everyone seemed willing to help. When purchasing your ticket, you should get two receipts - one is for the bus ride itself and the other is for the gates entering the bus departure area. Overall, this terminal is fine and likely better than many others in Latin America, but just stay aware of your surroundings.

I’ve passed through here on numerous occasions. Relatively easy to navigate as each destination is clearly marked. There is a tourist information office on site which provides good travel information as well as maps, etc. I like the fact that the terminal, which is relatively new, is clean and brightly lit - definitely NOT one of South America’s dingy terminals lurking with shady characters. My only complaint is it’s location - far from the city center and airport.

We overlooked interpreting all the bus ticket details and ended up in the wrong destination. Despite verbally validating the destination with many bus company personnel, we were shuttled to the wrong destination. The bus company’s response was “To Bad, So Sad”.

Secondly, our expensive professional camera was stolen while on the bus. We believe it was stolen shortly after boarding the bus in Quito. Despite what appears to be reasonable security in the bus terminal, scammers, street merchants of all kinds enter and leave the bus freely even after the bus is on route. The thief likely passed by the police and the security guard stationed at the side of the bus door.

Tickets are checked only after boarding the bus. Thieves roam the terminal and the buses as freely as the street dogs.
