Caleta Portales is a unique place along the shore with it’s boardwalk and the fish market along with some wild native Pelicans. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting same to any off beat traveler.

We came across this local site serendipitously when we got off the Metro at Portales Station. There are two piers jutting out into the ocean, one of which we were able to walk out onto after paying a nominal fee to the gatekeeper. Arrayed along the shore between the piers were stalls where the morning catch was being filleted by a boisterous gang who were mugging it up for the locals and tourists alike, along with the sea lions, pelicans, dogs and sea gulls that they were feeding, all making for a delightful cacophony of colour, noise and fun. This spot offers great opportunities to take photos, see locals at work & play and observe wildlife (and dead fish) up close.

After you walk down the "tunnel" where the locals sell their day's catch, walk up onto the high boardwalk and cross over and down to the actual pier. Here, you can see fishermen actually pulling up their boats onto the pier and sometimes loading/unloading fish for show. Small booths sell ready-to-eat ceviche as well. It is amazing to observe the interactions between the vendors and fishermen, and the locals buying the products. Right on the beach, there were lots of sea lions waiting for any fish scraps thrown, dogs barking at them, and flocks of seagulls everywhere! Against the main building are murals of local fish and their names, along with a saint (or Jesus, I couldn't tell because it was covered in seagull poop) seeming to look over the fishermen, facing the ocean.

It used to be one of the best places to eat fresh fish in Chile. Today, I went for lunch and I feel they owe me a fresher congrio, and not the dry and tasteless fish I had....

The view and location were great but the service and prices were bad. We would advise you to avoid this place and pick one of the little restaurants to the right.

You would think its opening hours (from seven, closed Mondays) would be listed online, but you would think in an un-Chilean way. A certain amount of local stuff comes in, but much of it is from down south and up north. It's extremely seasonal; the mainstay fish and shellfish are available essentially perennially, but when they are at their best (this has to do with spawning cycles and maturity, with different stages of maturity obviously peaking at a few different points during the year), they will be at their cheapest - if you see an abundance of something, it is probably in a good place. The restaurant options (there is a separate complex apart from the market) are determinedly unimpressive. If you want a snack, grab a one-luca ceviche or mariscal (made from seafood trimmings) from various vendors near the entrances, or an empanada and instant coffee in one of the places attached to the actual fish market - that's where the locals and indeed fisherfolk might snack. Raw (live) machas are really easy to shuck - you cut along the straight side - you can use a butter knife, it's just a matter of cutting where it's attached. Almejas are best boiled/steamed open, producing a nice bisque. Take whole fish up the back (towards the sea) to be cleaned and filleted to your liking.

So much fun to stop here and see the local way of life. Loved walking on the beach right near the sea lions. A must do while here. Tons of sea gulls too!!

Our Valparaiso bus tour passed by this well known fish market but it was too late in the day to check out the catch. Our tour guide said that this is the place to get fresh fish but you need to come early in the day.

This place has mixed reviews by the locals I met but personally I loved it! It is super easy to access (right on the metro line) and there are several restaurants right on the beach with a glorious view...how can you go wrong? The water is cold (Pacific) but anywhere there are waves crashing and serves beer and seafood makes me very happy!!
