We went there and took this elevator several times.
Several were not working, Victoria among others.
It is fun and at the same time it allows you to descend faster than on foot. S300 .
Going out on the street downstairs, you have to be careful, a couple of Canadians got threatened and they gave their money.
It is better to walk there during the day.

Go up as many as you can and then enjoy the walk down. They are only 100 or 300 pesos each way. And boy, they are steep, no wonder they built them when there were no houses along the shore. This one is the oldest. Inaugurated on December 1, 1883. The funicular was declared a Historic Monument on September 1, 1998

Whether you take this one, or any other of the several in town, how can you not love the experience?

We took two different ones to get back up the hill after walks down in the port - it’s just a great experience from another era. The views from the cabin and the top stations are fine, too

At just 100 pesos to save you walking up a hill this lift is both fun and a requisite of anyone staying at the top of Conception.

The Ascensor Concepcion is closed for extensive renovations to the stations. I believe it is scheduled to reopen in December 2017.
It is the most convenient ascension for anyone staying on Crrro Concepcion.

The ascensor is actually called Ascensor La Concepción, commemorating the heroic battle (from which no Chilean soldier survived, massively outnumbered as they were) that took place in Perú while it was being built in the early 1880s, not just the cerro itself. This is worth knowing, as this period of expansion was the high point of Chilean self-confidence and of Valparaíso as a port. Ascensor La Concepción links the main commercial street (with its various names all commemorating the same War of the Pacific) with a residential zone inhabited at the time by, among others, the English, German and Dalmatian communities, which is evident in street names, churches and long-decomissioned school buildings. The views from within the ascensor are only partial, but it has an atmosphere all of its own.

This elevator is the best one.

It's a steep thrill to ride, but also brings you to the most interesting neighbourhood: with Beethoven Street, Paseo Gervasoni and Paseo Dimalow.

This is where you’ll get the nicest art and best views.

This ascensor used to take me to school back in the days.... so it's a nostalgic ride for me.

It's a must-do in Valparaíso and because of that, you pay triple the fare that you pay on other ascensores. But since that's still only 300 pesos, it can't be the fare that scares you away. If anything does scare you, it will be the ascensor itself. It's the kind of mechanical installation that will put your faith in physics to a test! It's a short, steep ride and it's fun! The viewpoint and the whole naighbourhood it takes you to is worth the stroll and it's fun to do.
If nothing else, take the ride because there aren't a lot of ascensores anywhere in the world and many of those in Valparaíso are being shut down. Time takes its toll, so enjoy the ride while it lasts.

A throw back to 50 years ago. But essential where the streets travel steeply uphill. About 40 cents.
