- Trotamundo562Sao Paulo, SP4,348 contributionsFor those who are fans of the Navy, this is a visit that one cannot fail to make. It tells the entire history of the Chilean Navy, with details, models and videos. The price is differentiated for foreigners, it costs 5 times more than for the Chilean. I ended up paying the price for Argentines, but that was a detail of a special museum.Visited November 2024Traveled soloWritten December 13, 2024
- Anderson UrzúaSao Vicente, SP1,392 contributionsThe Maritime Museum is one of the coolest tours I have ever made. The amount of items on display is impressive, with artifacts, ship models and interactive displays that bring the naval history to life. A special highlight is the replica of the capsule that saved the 33 miners, an exciting and meaningful piece. It is a fascinating and educational place, offering an enriching experience for all visitors. I highly recommend!Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 26, 2024
- CriscaldasSao Paulo, SP450 contributionsImpermeable! Didactic, varied and instructive!!!!! Go calmly to enjoy all the rooms, and play on the pirate ship, regardless of age!!! The architecture of the building is beautiful and the view exuberant! One of the capsules that rescued the 33 miners in a mine in Chile is in the museum! Visit it calmly to see the details and learn. I loved it and want to go back to do the part of Antarctica with proper calm.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 12, 2024
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada5,300 contributionsLots and lots of steps to get here - maybe worth it depending on your point of view. And, from here, a magnificent view of Valparaiso. There’s 20 rooms on 2 floors surrounding a courtyard. Interesting perspective focussing on Chile’s maritime successes but not much on recent events. The permanent exhibits evoke a sense of pride and accomplishment. Then there is the usual naval regalia, artifacts, paraphernalia and assorted naval equipment. They have special events here too. Nominal fee but everything In Spanish. No commentary in foreign languagesVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 6, 2024
- emilio eSantiago, Chile298 contributionsPhenomenal display of Chilean naval history and culture, very complete and didactic and easy to travel, which makes it suitable for all audiences. It has staff with extensive knowledge and great friendliness. Also the place itself is very nice for its gardens and ancient corridors, and interesting since it was the headquarters of the first Naval School.Visited December 2024Traveled soloWritten February 14, 2025

The Naval and maritime Museum pays homage to José Toribio Merino Castro one of the principal coup leaders of the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, lead by dictator Augusto Pinochet. The Chilean Navy continues to be a bastion of fascist right-wing ideas. DON'T GO THERE!!

The museum, which covers the history of the Chilean Navy sits atop a hill overlooking the working port of Valparaiso. It was closed when visited because of unrest but the building was interesting as was the view of the port. The nearby Ascensor Artilleria was also closed which was a pity.

So this is pretty cheap- if you are up in Paseo 21 de Mayo, you can visit this museum. It's pleasant to walk through-- except for the hall dedicated to a fascist admiral [that should be removed]. The cafe in the courtyard is so cheap and such a cute place to hang.

It is not easy to be a sailor in Chile, during summer, good weather brings cold 35 knots southern winds from Antartica. Winter storms from the North means it should not find you anchored because all harbours face north. Chile is an island: West the Pacific, North the deserts, East the Andes, South, Cape Horn and Antartica, this means that for centuries the way to get to Valparaiso or to the Nitrate harbors of Tocopilla and Iquique was sailing. Many did not make it and shipwrecks stories are found all over. A good summary of this can be seen here: you will find models, parts and prints of the ships designed to sail this Ocean, especially before the Panama Canal was opened, when this was the way to get to Australia or San Francisco.
If you are interested in Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander, you will see a lot of Lord Thomas Cochrane, who inspired the character of Jack Aubrey. He lived close to this building for five years while the country fought Spain. Museum is located in an 120 years building with a great view of Valparaiso. Bring walking shoes, take two hours to visit the Museum and then walk around Playa Ancha hill.

I found most of the museum to be uninteresting. It had some statues of military heroes and some artifacts from the 19th century that seemed mostly irrelevant. From the other reviews, I was expecting a lot of English, but the majority of the exhibits had plaques or signs in only Spanish. To me, the information was boring in either language. There are many tours that give much more engaging lessons on the city's history. Admission is cheap (I believe less than $1 for students) but it wasn't worth the time.

Museum with good objects but not really telling a story. Focusing on few men whom were leaders in wars. OK museum if you need to kill time.

There is a lot of interesting history in Chile and this is all about the Navy history. They have a few different weapons and a prototype of the capsule that they used to free the Chilean miners.

If you're at all interested in Chilean naval history, this place is amazing. Even if you're not it's worth visiting. UK visitors will love it too for the very strong Royal Navy connections.

It was super cheap to enter, 1000 CLP maybe $1.50 US. Well worth the money. Neat old building, well maintained as were the grounds. The displays were nice and there was maybe 40% translated to English so you could get a sense of what what's happening. Give. English was not many places, this made it nice for passing the time readings.
Very pleasant and lovely little merchant kiosk type things at the promenade between the museum and the funicular.

OK, the Armada de Chile has a rather creepy history, which unsurprisingly is not covered, but this is a very cool museum nonetheless. Nice display of Cochrane's attack on Valdivia. There's not much in the way of non-Spanish support material.
There's even a strange pirate room for the kids.

Mi relato en ingles: Unfortunally, my experience in Valparaiso was very bad. My brother is living in Santiago de Chile and we decided to go to Valparaiso by ourselves. We took the Ascensor Artillería at 10:30 a.m. From there we went to the Naval and maritime museum.
Our mistake was decided to go by walk to the others turistic places.
so we started to walk and then after 15-20 minutes we were robbed violently.
2 men started to run in our direction, the biggest who was also the leader tried to take my bag and snatch my bag. I was stronger than him. So He threw me on the floor, I was immobilized with a foot and he pulled out a switchblade knife. I saw the knife close to my belly and I was ready to receive the knife. I closed my eyes and I got peed on. My brother was with the other guy who was short and thin and asked for the money/la Plata to a meter away. My brother gave the wallet with 200.000 chilean pesos and all documents and credit card. He was able to hide the I-phone 6 (the price is around 800 Eur). he didn´t tried to help me. My brother told me to stop to tighten the purse/the bag. I did it and the man took my bag which contain the samsung S3, sony zt3 waterproof, a small canon camera (value around 60 Eur) and 110.000 chilean pesos. We were on a Cerro/Hill very close to a square with a checkpoint police (carabinieros). we made the complaint of theft which took a lot of time. The police was very very lazy. Then we went to the police office by car to finish to declair. We lost all the money and we asked to the police some money to return to santiago. They gave the money and we made the transfer the following day. The police told us that Valpairaiso is getting the most dangerous city of Chile. The tourists has to go there with a Tour or if they walk alone, the have to go only in the most touristic places. Sometimes the Lanzas/thieves start to follow the tourist and await the opportunity to rob. It a pity that this beautiful city is so unsafe. The police told us that some people who comes to Valparaiso to give the recognition as a UNESCO heritage of humanity were also robbed. Be careful.
