Traveled with familyWritten June 30, 2018

The Naval and maritime Museum pays homage to José Toribio Merino Castro one of the principal coup leaders of the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, lead by dictator Augusto Pinochet. The Chilean Navy continues to be a bastion of fascist right-wing ideas. DON'T GO THERE!!

The museum, which covers the history of the Chilean Navy sits atop a hill overlooking the working port of Valparaiso. It was closed when visited because of unrest but the building was interesting as was the view of the port. The nearby Ascensor Artilleria was also closed which was a pity.

So this is pretty cheap- if you are up in Paseo 21 de Mayo, you can visit this museum. It's pleasant to walk through-- except for the hall dedicated to a fascist admiral [that should be removed]. The cafe in the courtyard is so cheap and such a cute place to hang.

I found most of the museum to be uninteresting. It had some statues of military heroes and some artifacts from the 19th century that seemed mostly irrelevant. From the other reviews, I was expecting a lot of English, but the majority of the exhibits had plaques or signs in only Spanish. To me, the information was boring in either language. There are many tours that give much more engaging lessons on the city's history. Admission is cheap (I believe less than $1 for students) but it wasn't worth the time.

There is a lot of interesting history in Chile and this is all about the Navy history. They have a few different weapons and a prototype of the capsule that they used to free the Chilean miners.

OK, the Armada de Chile has a rather creepy history, which unsurprisingly is not covered, but this is a very cool museum nonetheless. Nice display of Cochrane's attack on Valdivia. There's not much in the way of non-Spanish support material.
There's even a strange pirate room for the kids.

This would be interesting to a navel affectionado and was kind of interesting to the lay person, but I would not go back. I think young kids would be bored but there are a lot of models of ships and a lot of weapons and such. No audio tour available and only about 50% of the displays had English translations.

Plenty to see here and very good value (£0.30p for Seniors). As an Englishman I was previously ignorant of the high degree of UK involvement in Chilean Naval History. It's a pity that there is not more English language translation of the exhibit labelling.

As a Navy veteran, Museo Maritimo Nacional was on my Valparaiso "to do" list. The museum is situated on top of Cerro Artilleria overlooking Valparaiso harbor. We used the funicular to reach the museum entrance at the top of the mount.
The museum is a comprehensive array of static displays depicting the colorful history of the naval forces of Chile. A tour of the museum will leave you with a better understanding of Chile's naval history, and the key roles foreigners played in the development of the Chilean Navy. Museo Maritimo is definitely a place that Naval History buffs will enjoy. The entrance fee is minimal. In order to do the museum justice, I would set aside at least a full morning or afternoon to take the fine collection of naval artifacts and history. My only criticism of the museum is that there are no interactive displays. I believe by adding these types of displays would appeal to a broader base of visitors... especially children.
The view of the harbor from the museum is spectacular. And the trip up on the funicular affords photographers great shots from different perspectives along the way.

Placed on top of the hill, it has been well mounted, interesting for children and adults. It is worth to visit even with young children.

Mi relato en ingles: Unfortunally, my experience in Valparaiso was very bad. My brother is living in Santiago de Chile and we decided to go to Valparaiso by ourselves. We took the Ascensor Artillería at 10:30 a.m. From there we went to the Naval and maritime museum.
Our mistake was decided to go by walk to the others turistic places.
so we started to walk and then after 15-20 minutes we were robbed violently.
2 men started to run in our direction, the biggest who was also the leader tried to take my bag and snatch my bag. I was stronger than him. So He threw me on the floor, I was immobilized with a foot and he pulled out a switchblade knife. I saw the knife close to my belly and I was ready to receive the knife. I closed my eyes and I got peed on. My brother was with the other guy who was short and thin and asked for the money/la Plata to a meter away. My brother gave the wallet with 200.000 chilean pesos and all documents and credit card. He was able to hide the I-phone 6 (the price is around 800 Eur). he didn´t tried to help me. My brother told me to stop to tighten the purse/the bag. I did it and the man took my bag which contain the samsung S3, sony zt3 waterproof, a small canon camera (value around 60 Eur) and 110.000 chilean pesos. We were on a Cerro/Hill very close to a square with a checkpoint police (carabinieros). we made the complaint of theft which took a lot of time. The police was very very lazy. Then we went to the police office by car to finish to declair. We lost all the money and we asked to the police some money to return to santiago. They gave the money and we made the transfer the following day. The police told us that Valpairaiso is getting the most dangerous city of Chile. The tourists has to go there with a Tour or if they walk alone, the have to go only in the most touristic places. Sometimes the Lanzas/thieves start to follow the tourist and await the opportunity to rob. It a pity that this beautiful city is so unsafe. The police told us that some people who comes to Valparaiso to give the recognition as a UNESCO heritage of humanity were also robbed. Be careful.
