This is a really different town that at first blush looks like a run down, dirty, port town with little to offer...and if you only get to see it for a few hours during a cruise stop, that's what you will likely leave with. Guide books call it bohemian, but first impression is just funky. But Valpo is not about grand buildings and unique architecture, though there is some of that, too. It really is more about a world view. Like Neruda said, it's like a town that never bothered to comb its hair. To get a real sense of the city, leave the touristy areas and wander down Pedro Montt..or spend half an hour in the open air market on Av. Uruguay, or stop in a great little coffee shop near the universities in Playa Ancha and chat with the owner..to love Valpo takes a little time, but really not much effort.

There are two towers are either side of Plaza Sotomayor that is best seen from the Bay if you are on a cruise ship. Between the two towers, you can see the distinctive blue Navy building, Plaza Sotomayor, and the monument dedicated to the sailors who died during the Battle of Iquique. From Plaza Sotomayor, it is not as distinctive since there are several buildings surrounding the Plaza and you are looking from ground level. It is said that the two towers frame Valparaiso as if they were gates into Valparaiso.

This area would've been more of a highlight of our trip if the city decided to manicure the area a little bit more. There's a few cool things to see but really nothing spectacular.

I cannot believe this is a port where cruise ships come to. The view from Valparaiso to the sea is incredible...but that's it! As you walk the hills of this city you see nothing but torn up buildings that need fixing and paint and some should just be torn down. Even the nice(?) homes or buildings are so covered with graffiti that takes away from any beauty of the structure. As you get closer to the water at the bottom of the hills close to downtown, the hotels and homes do get nicer but still need fixing up and a coat of paint. The downtown area is busy but nothing to see.
Stay away!!!

You would hardly notice these towers while walking through the plaza. They look more imposing if on a boat in the harbour.

Valparaiso counts a unique landscape and historical architecture together with important commerce that was an icon before the channel of Panama was opened. Many sailors from around the world, stoped in this Port to trade their products and many decided to stay for good, giving many European and multicultural ethnic to the country, Ale Mcalister

You must get out of your bus or car and walk the streets of Valparaiso to know it. Yes, there are parts that are dirty, with crumbling buildings, but the "soul" (as another reviewer but it) is there on the streets. If you don't look at the graffiti as a "bad" thing but see it as "art" you will appreciate it more.

This is an area worth looking at by walking nearby as well as viewing from the upper levels of Valpariso To look at this area tells about why it was originally planned as a shipping powerhouse until the canal meant no longer the only shipping route.Much of this was pointed out to us on our tour of the area by our guide.

Went to eat seafood at the port and then headed to Viña de Mar. Some good shots for tourists but 3 hours might be enough to get a idea.
