While only open to the public on the weekends, this former prison is one of the city's most vibrant art museums. It includes work from former inmates, some of whom currently work as presenters at the gallery.

Calle Carcel St. 471 | Cárcel Hill, Valparaiso 2380138, Chile
Really nice place for people staying in Valpo for at least a couple of days. Away from the touristic neighbourhood you can get a touch of what life in the Jewel of the Pacific is. The park is wonderful for chilling out under a tree....More
Unless you check a schedule or get lucky, you might not find an event here, but you will find peace, quiet, and beautiful views. The architecture is interesting, as is the history. Read a little about the old prison to get some perspective about what...More
The Parque Cultural Cerro Carcel seems like an incredible asset for people living in Valparaiso. It's a very calm space with adult reading rooms, conference facilities, a cafe, and space for permanent and temporary exhibits. Nothing is in English, which makes sense since it serves...More
This may be one of the highest viewpoints of Valparaiso and the views are certainly spectacular, despite the wear and tear on the knees getting here (although buses of course run right outside). The park has several buildings to explore, but the largest and most...More
The space itself is great for all kinds of artistic expressions and teenagers gather there to enjoy the artistic ambient. On the 'tour 4 tips' we heard about the grim history of the ex-jail and how older people refuse to visit the museum because of...More
What a marvelous find. More than an acre of green open space on top of one of Valpo's hills. The old jail is still there; it is now working space for scads of artists.
It is such a short walk for such a different destination....More
A park/cultural centre built in a former jail in the middle of a hill it's quite unusual but it works. It has great views of the bay, a Protestant cemetery and the quirky paths of Valparaíso's hills. Also it has rotating art exhibits. Also the...More
I was encouraged to visit to see the current small photo exhibit with the theme "Carnivals in the Andes". I really enjoyed the photos around the room. There's heaps of potential to expand the offer and from the outfitting work being done on different floors,...More
What a great idea turning an abandoned prison into a contemporary art space! Not sure why this one is categorized under shopping - this is a park with some nice gardens and contemporary art exhibits. I think there are performances here as well. The exhibits...More
Up until 1999 the Ex-Carcel was, well, a carcel, a working prison. When a new prison was built this space was converted into a community art space. There are also playing fields, a small playground, and lots and lots of murals and artwork on the...More
