Surrounded by by a town that is falling apart, the Plaza Sotomayor is a square with a statue and a massive naval building (Edificio de la Comandancia) witch all look fairly impressive and well maintaned. Even though it is one of the most impressive sights in Valparaiso, it is hardly worth traveling far to see it. So if you are... More

This is a no-person's land-- really a pavement rectangle without clear traffic or parking markings-- at one end the ocean and at another the navy-- with a monument in the middle--whatever...

It's one of the main squares in valparaiso. For its history it's a good spot to start your tour of the city, specially because it's very close to the El Peral elevator (renovations seem to be almost done) or the El peral steps, that take you to the Paseo Yugoslavo, packed with tourist attractions and a great view of the... There were only two items of interest in this Plaza. One is the headquarters of the Chilean navy, a white and blue building. The other is the Monumento de los Heroes de Iquique which honours those from the War of the Pacific. This monument is surrounded by a busy traffic route. Be extra careful when crossing the road!

Whoa, every once in while you "stumble" onto some great local tradition. We did just that yesterday. "Stumble" isn't a fair expression. Actually, we have been anticipating the Feast of St. Peter for months now. To make it even more of a challenge, the Feast of St. Peter always takes place on a weekend, but you have to dig to... We ended our tour of Vaparaiso at the Playa Sotomayor. We enjoyed a great Starbucks latte, sitting outside admiring the beautiful powder blue Victorian looking building of the Armada de Chile. There are other beautiful buildings as well as the monument honoring the sailors of two important Chilean battles. A nice place to relax and have a great cup of... More

It was a trek to get to Plaza Sotomayor, not to mention everything is uphill from there! Not much of interest, really.

Big square on downtown, is we're the important buildings are. Aldo you can find there a Starbucks and other coffee shops and very close are restaurants and food stores. Good place to walk around, and of course it face the ocean.

This plaza holds the central Navy headquarters and oftentimes has presentations in the center according to national holidays, protests, or simply governmental cars parked in the center. It's large enough to safely walk around but one needs to pay attention to the street-crossing signals because the road flows right into the sidewalk. Access to Cerro Alegre is just behind the...
