Early may we did the Morado glacier hike and it was great !
Before you start this trip, be aware that it takes some driving before and after the hike: guide picks you up at 7.30at your hotel. Due to the rush hour in Santiago and the small winding route, it took us 3h30m to reach the start and 2:5 h to return.
Once you reach the start of the trail, you arrive in a amazing landscape.
The tracks leads you up, but not too steep in the first part, between the Andes mountains. Beautiful scenes, all sorts of colors. You can do this trip in any sort of weather, it is always amazing. We even had some light snow.
Last part of the track in a bit steeper and you arrive at the end of the trail, near a lake, surrounded by rocks, glaciers and silence,.
An amazing locations dominated by a glacier, or better a dying glacier.
Saw a photo of the locations 20 years ago. I am sure that in 15 year time, the glacier will be gone. Those people who doubt climate change, wake up!
Another reason to visit the place, is mining. At the start to the track you can see mining activity and its catastrophic effects. Now it is still an amazing location, but you see already how this terrible mining is destroying the landscape for future generations.
Shame, so please go now.
Should you go with the company ? Yes, please do.
These guys are very motivated, working on the success of their young business.
Of course there are some issues , but they will approve al the time.
Guide told us that security was a main issue for them.
So there we had a problem..
If you transport people, please do it with a suitable car.
This last part of the road is gravel, steep and with lots of rocks and pites
The car was a 2wd with regular tires not suitable for the trip.
Going up and later down, we where quite uncomfortable, yet we are experienced Travelers
