About
Inaugurated in 1901 by President Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, this was the meeting site for the National Congress. Today this national monument, with its neoclassical French designs and Corinthian order columns along with its gorgeous gardens is now used as the offices for the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

A lovely imposing building.
A fence all around it.
You can get some nice shots thru the fence.
Not sure of the history.

I only rated it average because I passed by on the street. The grounds are very beautiful but I was not able to go in since it was Sunday. There are two bells hanging from a frame in near the entrance which were returned to Chile during their bicentennial celebration by Wales. Apparently the bells had been salvaged from a Chilean ship that sank off of Wales in the 19th Century.

While walking several blocks away from the City Center, we came across this beautiful white building with landscaped garden. We learned that it is the Ex Congresso.
We saw some people milling around the front/entrance of the building and asked the guard if we could enter. She explained that it is not opened to tourists, only to some officials and key people of Chile.
Though we were not able to see its inside, we admired the building facade and the beautiful gardens.

Inaugurated in 1876 and rebuilt after a fire in 1895, this neoclassical building with magnificent Corinthian columns was used by the Chilean National Congress until 1973. While an enduring symbol of national pride, the grounds have a somber side. The eastern section of the gardens was once the location of the Iglesia CompañÃa de Jesús (Church of the Company). In 1863 hundreds of churchgoers (some say as many as 2000-3000) lost their lives in a fire. A statue of La Madre de Jesús (Mother of Jesus) was erected on the site of the church’s main altar in memory of the victims. The building was declared a National Monument in 1976 and is now used for government offices. I’m not sure if it is open to the public. On a Sunday afternoon, the grounds were gated, and we settled for a view through the iron fence.

Recent reviewers here are wrong when they say tourists cannot go inside.
We did a tour on July 13th, 2018, with prior reservations.
We made the reservations through e-mail contact, protocolostgo@senado.cl, and protocolo2@senado.cl. Paula was a great guide!

The Ex Congresso Nacional was completed in 1876 and was nearly destroyed in 1895. Subsequently, the building was restored to it previous grandeur. Historically speaking, this is one of the most important buildings in all of Chile, for it was here that the legislature met for over seventy years until General Pinochet closed it after assuming all power in Chile(which is why it's called Ex Congresso). Sadly for the people of Santiago, Pinochet moved the new Congress to Valpairaso where it currently resides.

For some strange reason, maps provided by the Touristist Info offices in Santiago list this under "other interesting buildings." What an understatement. It was apparently closed but we went to a back entrance on Morande, were promptly ushered in and soon had our own private tour guide for the building (no fee). Congress now meets in Valparaiso but the Senate resumed meetings here about 10 years ago. The Senate chamber, ex. Congress, Committee room and Reception Room were exquisite and oozing with Chilean history.

On our walking tour of old Santiago we passed this building and it had all our cameras clicking. It's brilliant white façade and manicured gardens make it a worthwhile stop to take some photos. Not far from Plaza de Armas, it's easy to access.
