Iglesia de San Agustín was built in 1625 under the order of St. Augustine. It is in the Spanish Colonial Baroque & Neoclassical architectural styles. Legend has it that the wooden carving of Jesus Christ known as Cristo de Mayo had its crown of thorns around its head slip to its neck during the 1647 Santiago earthquake. When someone tried to move the crown, Christ’s face started bleeding and the ground shook. After that nobody tried it again.
A sub-altar dedicated to St Rita of Cascia – a wife, mother, widow and nun for almost 40 years - contains a small piece of her bone. She was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1626 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. Inside as well, is a unique altar, fabulous tile flooring, ornate ceilings mosaics and beautiful stained glass windows.

Well worth visiting this beautiful cathedral. Amazing interior. Painted ceilings. This building has been rebuilt four times due to earthquakes.

I've come to the conclusion that visiting empty churches is a waste of time, as all of my memorable church experiences involve human interactions. They are always peaceful pretty and a good place to rest your feet, as was this one. No more.

Built in Spanish Baroque & Neoclassical style in 1625, this is one of the oldest churches in Chile, the facade is impressive with its columns, inside is equally stunning.

We spent only a few minutes in here as it was not to my taste, Just the usual Catholic decorations in a big somewhat gothic church. Important for the locals.

This Church is beautiful. Behind the altar there is a beautiful painting of "LA Milagrosa" (Virgin of the Miracles).
The Church has many pieces of art.
It is dedicated to Saint Agustine.
When visiting, please respect the people praying.
