About
The Gabriela Mistral Center, GAM, is a contemporary cultural center, located in a historical building in the heart of Santiago. It is found between Alameda, the capital city’s main avenue, and the Lastarria neighborhood, a circuit that includes cinemas, arts, design, gastronomy, bookstore and parks. The building that hosts it was the emblematic building both of Salvador Allende’s government, commissioned for the UNCTAD III, and the dictatorship, when it became the seat of the military junta. GAM was inaugurated in September 2010, in order to bring culture closer to all audiences. Its mission and name are inspired by the Gabriela Mistral Metropolitan Cultural Center, inaugurated in 1972 and named after Chile’s first Nobel Prize-winning poet. GAM is a diverse and open meeting space. Today, it consists of 22.000 m2 hosting ten halls for theater, dance, circus, classic and popular music, visual arts, popular arts, and conferences. There are also five squares and a library, BiblioGAM.

A large modern building converted to a cultural centre, it was hard for me to see what the heck goes on here. I did enjoy moseying about- there was the odd artwork scattered about. One day while walking past, there was a free (and fun) concert. But like most cultural centres I've seen, there just seems like a lot of empty space and people sitting around doing nothing. Maybe if you are a theatre or dance enthusiast they'll have something for you. If you happen to pass by and have little else to do, I'd say pop in and take a look around. It's free anyhow, and if nothing else you can use the bathrooms.

This exhibition was great. Such workmanship and very well displayed in glass boxes. Loved the hats!!! Loved the belts! Loved the feather headdresses! In fact everything!

It’s a superb building but it felt under used. Lots of young people practicing dance outside but nothing going on inside. On a Saturday. Many students in the well priced coffee shop though.

The building is thought provoking and excellent in many respects. It just seemed dead and that was a surprise and a shame. Someone needs to grab it and do a lot more with the the space!

We strolled into this art sanctuary and found plenty of exciting, fresh and innovative artistic expressions which were equal parts unique and intriguing.

Free entry. Highly recommend!  Budget an hour and a half for your visit.

coffee shop, exhibitions, lots of activities, some small shops, restaurants.... give it a try after lunch on the area of Lasterria or go on the end of the day when the sun is not burning that much. There will be no regret.

Consists of two buildings, which are separated by a patio. Inside, there are different types of art exhibits (photography, mixed media, textiles), a bookstore, library and restaurant. The outdoor space appears to be popular with groups of youth, who use it to practice dance routines. Closest subway is Universidad Catolica (line 1).

Maybe I had too high of expectations but did not enjoy GAM as much as I expected.

I found the layout to be quite confusing and couldn't really tell what exhibits were going on or where to find them without some serious investigating.Maybe I hit it at a bad time but was not too excited about what was being shown there at the time.

The building architecture is interesting to see though.

It's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area but if you are making a special trip, I would check the exhibit list ahead of time.

This cultural center is locally referred to as the GAM, and was one of the highlights of our trip through Chile. For anyone pursuing art galleries or Chilean artesans while in Santiago, this should be at the top of the list. In pursuit of an art gallery zone in Santiago, we came across this new modern building on the edge of Lastarria. There was a long line of youngsters outside waiting to purchase Lade Gaga concert tickets, while inside were a couple of amazing exhibitions. The exhibitions rotate every six months or so, and while we were there we saw a UNESCO artisan exhibit of indigenous Chilean crafts, a photography exhibit, and an architecture exhibition of about 50 recent modern Chilean projects. This one building provided an amazing vista of Chilean arts; past and present. During the month, we noted that the GAM was hosting music, dance, and theater performances as well. This is a gem that Santiago and Chile should be proud of. I must see in Santiago for culture junkies!!

Beautiful and interesting building and very cool exhibits. As a multigeneration family, this cafe was a perfect hang out/retreat from time to time as the location is very central to other attractions and open Sundays/public holidays. Great coffee, friendly young staff, heaps of space and a overview of courtyard /student hang out with modern dance and theatre students casually rehearsing so lively things going on for kids and others to look at...
