We walked around this area many times during a recent visit to Santiago. The plaza is where you can find locals taking casual walks and simply absorbing every ounce of historical architecture in the buildings that line it. Plaza de La Constitucion is located in front of the northern facade of the Palacio de la Moneda and is surrounded by other government buildings such as those housing the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Banco Central de Chile and the Intendencia de Santiago. Designed by the Italian architect Joaquín Toesca and built in the late 18th century, the Palacio de la Moneda is said to be one of the finest neoclassical buildings in South America. Originally intended as the Royal Mint, today the palace houses the Chilean presidential offices.

Clean and sort of bland looking.
A nice area to walk around in.
Benches all over do you can sit.
Museum and cafe were closed today for Christmas.
An important building which you should see while exploring Santiago.

Very large square, with a good view on the Moneda Palace. There is not much more on this square, which is quite symbolic for Chile.

A huge plaza in the centre of Santiago, opposite La Moneda also surrounded with other government buildings. Large grass areas and statues of important people in Chilean history, including Allende. Unfortunately missed the changing of the guard.

If you are in the city, you must try to get to see the changing of the guard, which happens every other day... The pomp is excellent, and so rigid and formal. It lasts about 20 mins . The half way through this so formal and inportant ceremony, the band starts playing ABBA tunes of all things, kicking off with dancing queen... Awesome.. The square is nice, with some important statues in.. and surrounded with important govement buildings, including the Presidential palace

Constitution Square is a lovely plaza in the heart of Santiago’s Civic district. It is surrounded by government buildings, including La Moneda, the Presidential Palace. The plaza dates to 1935 and owes its current design to a 1984 renovation. Here’s your chance for a photo of the Chilean flag – 12 of them flank the Palace entrance where the changing of the guard takes place. Four monuments of national Chilean figures anchor the plaza (see if you can find the one with the bullet hole). We enjoyed a quiet walk in Constitution Square on a late Sunday afternoon. This is a great place to experience Chilean history.

This spot was part of our free walking tour, and it was timed perfectly with the changing of the guard ceremony. It was a lot of fun watching this, and was surprisingly long.
I found information on the timing of this event spotty and inconsistent. So I would ask around upon your arrival to confirm what date and time to arrive for this.
This is also important information about Chile's dark history involving this square, so I would suggest checking it out as part of a tour.
If you go when there is no changing of the guard ceremony, and without information from a guide, you will be disappointed.

Keep your belongings secure, enjoy for half an hour and leave. Best moment are early in the morning to see the flag rise ceremony or at end of the day.

Nice plaza fronting the presidential palace. Unfortunately we missed the changing of the guards each time we passed by, which apparently takes place at 10.00am each day.
