An amazing variety of mature trees, plenty of seating, paths for strolling and large grassy areas for picnics make this a well utilized park. There were always a lot of people enjoying it. Unfortunately most of the beautiful statues were marred with graffiti from the protests.

A green oasis at edge of city and by river. Well maintained paths, lawns, gardens and trees. A few sculptures, plenty of seating. Lack of toilet facilities. Most pleasant to stroll through.

There are plenty of walking trails and open spaces to enjoy along the way. Not to many homeless. The locals use the area a lot and plenty of people watching to be had.

I GOT ROBBED IN PARQUE FORESTAL A COUPLE MONTHS AGO! This was in broad daylight and there were plenty of people around. The police and the people at the U.S. embassy weren't at all surprised when I told them about it--they had heard the same story many times.
Here's how it happened: I was walking through this park taking pictures (so, yes, they were attracted to my camera, an SLR); actually I saw them checking me out and I even wanted to get a shot of them b/c they were such a clearly sinister-looking gang, kinda night-clubby/druggie types with shaved heads (not skinhead-like, rather those sorta fancy shave jobs) all sitting around a picnic table. Just after I passed them a guy who looked like one of them asks me what time it is--this is to hear my voice and establish that I'm a tourist (and it also showed them that I had an iPhone). A few seconds later something soft and wet hits me on the back of my neck--bird crap or something like it. A woman comes up to me and is helping me clean it off--she's got bottle of water and some kleenex; she gets me to take off my jacket so she can clean it off, but then to get my jacket off I have to take off my bag and camera and put them on the park bench next to me (at the embassy they told me it's always a woman doing this part). Then a guy comes up and makes a noise and stares at me (he looked like the rest of them too); this distracts me from the bag and camera; then this little old man tells me my stuff is gone and tells me that they went that-a-way (out of the park) and is running after them and getting me to follow and then telling me that they're getting on this bus that's pulling away. So that's it. Again, totally light out, plenty of people around, very nice area, and happens all the time. So if you get hit my bird crap or whatever, just get out of there.
During my 3 weeks in Chile--and before I got hit--i also heard about another tourist who had all his camera gear stolen in Santiago; and in Valparaiso I saw the end of an operation like the one I got hit with: people running onto a bus I was on in a big hurry, all excited, acting like they were looking for somebody (though it wasn't very good acting), and then jumping out of the bus through the back door. So it's definitely not uncommon.
I should also add that I'm 5'10", male, a New York City, and a big traveler. So not a particularly obvious target other than the camera and the fact they I was clearly a tourist.
All that said, I generally liked Santiago a lot, loved Valparaiso, and loved Patagonia. And Parque Forestal was, ironically, the prettiest and most peaceful place in Santiago. Just be prepared...

Parque Forestal is the Central Park equivalent in Santiago. Although it is not the biggest park in the city, it is certainly the most culturally inclined, history ridden (started in 1905) and relaxed. Full of tall trees, lush gardens and soft grass - this park is a favourite amongst residents and visitors to simply relax on a hot summer day. Seeing people lay under a shady tree and have an afternoon sleep is no uncommon. If you feel like a walk, there are plenty of well maintained pathways that wind around the gardens.
This park is full of statues and displays, perfect for any budding photographer. If you are a museum lover, you will also find a museum to contemporary art in Parque Forestal.
There are also playgrounds that children can use to keep themselves amused, as well as a variety of food stalls along the edges of the park - towards the river.
For the physically inclined individuals, the built in gym and training equipment scattered around the park offers a great surrounding and atmosphere to tackle your fitness routine.
The park is easily accessible from with the Metro, Baquedano being the closest station.

Good sizeable park, a lot of shady trees, perfect place to wind down after exploring the city or for a picnic on a lazy day.
Tips: watch out for dog poop as there a lot of stray dogs around. Also choose a location away from the river, as there is a bike path there which can cause some dusty situation.

Although the park itself is nice, very tree-crowded, and it´s a few block long to walk into, the environment is not the best. You see many junkies, and you may be unlucky enough to get robbed.

This is a genuine arboretum with appropriate labels for the trees, and the best way to cross the city by foot from east to west or vice versa. The grass is kept green even in midsummer. A lung for the city.

This is a nice park in downtown Santiago. There are always people enjoying the shade of the trees and grass. On the weekend it is very crowded. There was a concert on Sunday with food trucks and vendors. Heladera Emporio La Rosa ice cream shop is at the end of Merced road along the edge of the park. I can recommend a treat from there while you relax.

Como está a temperatura em Santiago?
Vejo que a cidade tem uma grande amplitude térmica onde posso no mesmo dia sentir e muito calor.
