One of the main things I travel for is to see art museums. I like almost all of them! But this one was disappointing. The most interesting thing was a group of kids sitting on the floor drawing (see photo).
There was no guide to the museum, printed or online, so I had to walk through to figure out what was there. (Luckily, I had plenty of time, so I didn't need to choose.) About half of the galleries seemed to be closed. The ones that were open had lots of wall space and writing, almost all of it in Spanish... but not a lot of art. By the time I'd seen it all, I'd spent maybe half an hour (I can often spend several hours in a museum.)
If you're short on time in Santiago, you might consider going to other art museums.

To our great disappointment there were very few art works of Chilean artists. There seemed to be more copies of famous works by European artists( Rafael,Delacroix, Manet etc) and works by artists from elsewhere.
The presentation was dull.
On the day we went the Contemporary Art section was closed. Maybe it's more interesting.
Another sad thing is that the beautiful building, like many monuments and sculptures in the city, is smeared with ugly graffiti. Such a shame.

The building was in reform, so it was all with tapoms and chairs; besides, there was only 1 bathroom available. There were exhibitions of Chilean artists on the ground floor, 1st floor and underground. Free entry. Leave some time also to stroll in the parks around the museum and in front as well.

The building is beautiful and the graffiti on the back interesting. The museum is not too big and manageable. There seemed to be only special exhibits, and some were rather abstract. Quite a few copies (Manet, Michelangelo, classic sculptures) which was surprising (nothing against copies, the greatest artists copied). I would have bunched them into one room, and given the public a chance to experience the educational process of copying. Interesting were the Chilean painters which I did not know, and I would have liked to see more of. But fairly to say, a museum is not for the tourists but for the local population.

Very beautiful museum! There was an exhibition for the 50th anniversary. Ancient art rubs shoulders with modern art. We greatly appreciate the architecture, the highlighting of the works... Really, it's worth a look!
And it's free for everyone.

Free bathrooms! You need to use a 100 peso coin to leave bookbag at the lockers. The art is just okay - nothing too great. The building itself is the star. Worth 30-45 minutes if you are nearby

We were far more impressed by the architecture than by the displays. I have since learned that many of the displays had been removed due to the protests. The outside of the building had beautiful carvings. Unfortunately there was a lot of graffiti done by hooligans supposedly protesting. The decorative iron work inside the building was gorgeous.

I've been to art museums from Chicago to Florence, New York to Shang Hai. This was abolutely the worst I have experienced. Well over half of the museum was roped off and unavaiable. Elevator smelled. Dirty floors. If what I saw was really fine art, I'm stumped. Looked like they were painted in an art class that morning. No English description, I do realize where I was, but would have loved to know if this was for real. Many paintings mysterially hung just at hips hieght. I would say save your money, but it was free. Save your time.

Fine arts museum—historical and beautiful building connected next to the contemporary arts museum. Free admission. Way to small..figure less than an hour.
I found all of the museums free, but needing more art!

Many years without entering the Museum. I went for Vanity Fauna. Excellent. Congratulations to the exhibitor Marcela Trujillo and team after the exhibition. 👏🏻 I also had the possibility to face the "Looks on the Wallmapu". Extremely necessary, from the art in this case. 🥹
