We asked our guide, Sean, from Chile Dream Tours to incorporate this into our city tour and he graciously did...but if we had known what traffic would be like, we would have skipped it! We were thinking this market would have lots of unique fruits and vegetables in it like those we had visited in Costa Rica, Peru, and Ecuador, but we were disappointed to see mostly what we have back in the states with just one or two exceptions. We could've passed on this one...but if you've never been to a market like this, it's interesting if you have the time.

We visited differeChurrasco nt parts of the market from different countries and also from Chile. Floor was wet so be careful when walking. Tried different foods including the churrasco. Prices cheaper than at restaurants. May want to try to go on the outer edge to eat if you want peace and tranquility.

La Vega is the market where the locals go. You’ll find numerous stalls of fresh vegetables and fruits here. The second floor is the best kept secret for dining in Santiago. There are rows and rows of restaurants serving authentic Chilean cuisine. If you ate all your meals in Santiago at La Vega you would be doing better than 99% of the other tourists. Be sure to visit the flower market located in a separate smaller building just outside the main building at La Vega.

La Vega Central has been here for over 100 years. It is the place where all fresh fruits and vegetables arrive from Chile's farms in the north and the south. Before dawn, the trucks arrive with their precious produce to be auctioned (at around 4 AM). Later, as the stocks decrease, some producers start selling their stuff in smaller quantities, so anyone can go home with a dozen sweet corns or some kilos of tomatoes at a good price.
In the last 10 years, people from Bolivia, Peru,The Dominican Republic and Haiti have started to work or sell their stuff . Also, you can see that some of the sellers are foreign people, but Chileans and foreigners seem to enjoy mixing with each other. There are many smiles at this place. Their jargon is a treasure of Chilean linguistics. If you can understand Chilean Spanish in slang, you'll certainly understand how they tease each other every day.
What I like most about La Vega is the variety of nice smells there are at this big market: cilantro, celery, spices, eateries, apricots, melons, potatoes... Mmm! Delicious.
And if you are hungry, you can stop by the myriad of small restaurants situated in the block between the streets Artesanos and Antonia López de Bello. Mind you! There are many more eateries at the Mercado de Abasto Tirso de Molina ( a few steps to the south, towards River MAPOCHO). For CLP 2,000 (2 Uk pounds) you can have a wonderful lunch.
To reach La Vega, take the Metro. You can reach La Vega via Line 2 (Patronato Station) or (Cal y Canto Station, this one is just outside another landmark: the Mercado Central).

Vega Central is across the street from the smaller Vega Chica market that doesn't have much in it. At a minimum, one should walk through Vega Central just to experience it. When we were there, it wasn't very busy so we didn't need to worry too much about the pick-pockets we were warned about. There is a vast array of fruits, vegetables, and meats. We were amazed at the size of some of the fruit and vegetables. While not as clean as many markets in Europe, it is just as large, and exactly as I imagined it would be.

The place is packed with people and packed with incredible quality fruit and veg, meat, and foodstuffs of every kind. It's 60,000 square metres, or the equivalent of two olympic pools by 12 olympic pools. With that many stalls, and so many decisions to make, it can be overwhelming but it's a complete adventure. If you're shopping, budget for a couple of hours. If you plan to stop and have a feed mid-market, budget for three. If you're just there for a rubber-neck, allow an hour. Very little English spoken but if you can point and pay, you'll get by.

Came here twice - once at 6am and the other time at 10.30am. I think we came to early as only half of the shops were open.

It still didn't stop us to purchase a juice and a sweet to go with it.

I spoke to the locals and if you want to go when its in full swing, go around midday. Was also told that it closes at 4pm...

Fruit and veg seem real cheap there and there's plenty of vendors.

And yes, we felt very safe.

This is the place if you:

-want to see the real Chile
-want to get the freshest produce and an awesome assortment-
-feel adventurous

La vega is not beautiful, but I love it and I think there is a certain beauty in that Chaos. It is a great sunday morning stroll, where you can find freshly squeezed juice and lots of places for breakfast. I recomend to be careful with your belongings and mantain a sense of orientation.

We walked from our hotel Crown Plaza to the La Vega Central market around 10am in January, before it got too hot. On the way there, we walked through the area where there were a number of ethnic markets/restaurants - Chinese, Korean, etc.

The traffic around La Vega Central was quite congested. It was a large place. There were a lot of stores/stands inside the covered structure of the open market, and there were many stands outside as well. Many locals shop here, pulling their little carts. There were many many fresh vegetables and fruits. I was amazed at the very big and fat corn on the cobs - not sure what kind they were. And the huge watermelons looked so nice! I wish we could have gotten one, if we were not staying in a hotel ....

What we were very amazed was the fact that, in such hot weather, and with so much food, there was not a single fly! Don't quite know what they did to accomplish this! Come to think of it, the central mercado where mostly seafood was sold, did not have flies either! Amazing!

This La Vega Central market was much bigger than the market in Barcelona and was more local. It was rather crowded, but mostly with locals shopping there. We enjoyed the visit!
