If you are looking to enjoy Chilean wines and have a fun experience, I would recommend CWL. Our trip has just concluded (july 4th, 2015) There were 5 of us in total and we, as a group, have toured in Argentina and also South Africa, so I believe that we have some experience with how a tour can be run.

Mauricio (the owner) was our guide and driver, he is a high energy guy. Zero to one hundred nearly instantly and he can carry the show. In his non-stop verbal assault, he sometimes runs a bit loose with the facts, but they weren't critical to the experience. What he needs to learn is that he is not the star of the show...the wineries, the wine makers and most importantly, the wine are the stars and he needs to let those people and things speak for themselves.

He inserts himself too much during ones interaction with the winery. On a few occasions we sent him on frivolous errands just to get him away from the wine maker so we could hear their story without his commentary.

Don't get me wrong, we had a great tour! We gave CWL 5 stars and a 10% tip on top of a tour that was 5 days long and included hotels, most meals and great amenities. I only hope he can read this and make positive adjustments to his approach so as not to over-power clients and potentially tarnish their experience.

Good Luck!

I recently visited Santiago for business and had a day to hang around so my colleagues and I booked a tour with Mauricio from Chilean Wine Lovers.
Everything about this tour was great. Mauricio met us at the airport upon our arrival and we headed straight out to the wineries. He has a great big van with lots of space that can fit large groups, there were 4 of us. We stopped for a quick coffee on the way and Mauricio gave us so history about Santiago and Chile and showed us a map. We then headed towards the Casablanca Valley. On the way we stopped at a cute little restaurant for traditional empanadas (meat and cheese) and Mauricio brought along a bottle of wine for us to share. Then we were off to the wineries. Our first stop was at the Organic Winery and we did a quick tour and then a tasting. We then went to a second place and had a short tour of the barrels which were really cool. We had some tastings there and then we were all hungry. Although the plan was to go to one more winery that Mauricio had picked out we changed it up a bit and went to a different winery on a cliff overlooking the whole valley and we had lunch and a bottle of wine. It was magnificent with breath taking views. We hung out there for a bit and then headed back to the city where we were dropped at our hotel. Overall it was a really great day. Mauricio was a really great host and knew just the right amount to be involved and also gave us our space while we were at the wineries. He was knowledgable, friendly, and reliable. I would recommend contacting him if you are looking to do wine tours when in Santiago.

So, my Friend, I have just saved you a lot of time. There are very few things in life that I can recommend unconditionally, but our time spent with Mauricio earned that honor. My wife and I had a few days in Santiago before traveling to Portillo to ski. I did the exact thing that you are doing now -Yes, You!!! I hit the Internet to do some research. I saw some good reviews and made contact. Mauricio was very friendly and attentive by e-mail and offered several tour options of the wineries and asked about our preferences. He ultimately recommended one of the options to us, and guess what! It was not the most expensive!! He genuinely listened to us and also gave us a few tips regarding do's and don't' about our stay in Santiago before we even met him.

On the day of our tour, he was very friendly and personable. Speaks fluent English! He brought us to a restaurant that serves authentic delicious empañadas out of adobe ovens and paired a wine for the occasion. He was very into wine pairings. So much so that at our third winery, we ate a five course sampling with different paired wines, and every food course was invented by him. What that means is that no one else in the restaurant was eating what we were eating, and every course paired about three or four flavors (ie. abalone, cous cous, tomatoes, and lemon) that were meant to be swallowed with the wine as well.

This was our first trip to Chilè. I did not know what to expect. I have been on tours where tour guides have brought you to places and pushed you to buy the owners' wares. That didn't happen even once! I have so much more to say about our experience, but I just promised you that I had saved you time. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and book! I promise you that you won't be disappointed, or you can hassle me and give me crap.

Chilean Wine Lover sells "experiences" while providing expensive taxi service. On the day we started our tour, Mauricio told us that the two agreed upon wineries in the Maipo Valley had cancelled. It felt like a bait and switch and it was too late to remedy.

Exorbitant Pricing
We initially agreed to pay him $2,300 USD for 1/2 day tour of Santiago and two full days of winery tours even though we complained that the prices seemed high. The first wine tour in Maupo Valley and a second day in Casablanca valley. We justified the expense because of his assurances of quality. Once you subtract the 1/2 day city tour (also not worth it at $175/person) he was asking to be paid $800 USD per day to drive 4 people to two wineries with a stop for lunch. Mauricio claimed the experience was private, would include winemakers and owners and would feature wines not generally available to consumers. This was not the case.

We found out later, the tours we received cost between CLP 13,000 and 18,000 ($25-$30 USD) per person to tour premises and taste 2-3 wines. Once there, marketing representatives poured generally available wines and gave standard 20 min tour of vineyard and/or Winemaking fácility. We only received one "premium" winery tour and the winery stated it cost CLP 25,000 ($42 USD) per person. House Morande was probably the highlight of an otherwise disappointing three tours and because of it I bought Mauricio two bottles of wine as a tip.

I am intentionally not mentioning the names of the wineries because, once we arrived he disappeared and I was able to engage in Spanish with the winemakers in a meaningful way. I enjoyed the wineries we visited in spite of the fact that they were not what we asked for (wines are available in US).

Even if lunch cost $200 for the four of us (which seems high), he was still pocketing $500 to drive us around! Add to that his incessant, loud chatter and it borders on a nightmare.

Nonexistent Wine Connections
We were able to speak with winemakers because we approached them ourselves or in one case the tour guide was coincidentally being trained by the winemaker on what to say. In another facility a fairly influential winery owner was present and Mauricio encouraged me to introduce myself, he obviously did not know the man himself. This winery owner and president of winery association frankly seemed annoyed at the intrusion. Mauricio only knew the tour guides, not the winemakers. Not an insider.

Poor Tour Quality
When asked about a memorial near Paine, featuring many wooden poles he falsely stated it was a memorial to a car accident. In spite of the fact, we later saw a photograph of the memorial at the museum of memory and realized it was a monument to the "disappeared" who died under the military dictatorship regime. Why lie?

In a separate incident he asked if we wanted to hear his lecture on the soils of Chile (as applies to winegrowing). He made several misstatements regarding the development of the Andean and Coastal ranges (number of years old and tectonic movements), He knew there were two geologists in our group and his overbearing lecture didn't even touch on the wine growing element. Also, why?

CWL is a very bad example of tour operators. While the Chilean wine industry is by and large sophisticated and advanced this operator is primarily interested in giving superficial wine tours to wineries you could easily book yourself and in one case take a bus to from Santiago.

I should mention that I am a professional winemaker doing business in Northern California, while our expectations may have been high for that reason I feel doubly offended that in spite of his knowing this fact he just took us to the same places he takes everyone else and pretended it was "special".

In the end, we paid him a total of $1,616 for the tours, discounting the winery cost once we discovered that they did not charge $70 per person. Needless to say, he behaved even more poorly after that.

Reading other reviews of Maurice's tour l really wonder if we had the same man by the end of the day. At $325 Aus this was an inflated price to do a personalised tour of 3 wineries. One winery was for lunch and admittedly the food was delicious but we shared the tour with his 2 daughters and shared lunch with him trying to figure out how to take our credit card payments....the WHOLE lunch, not very engaging! He started charming but wilted considerably as the day progressed. Not sure paying $650 for two deserved what we got, think you can do better!

Dear Wine Lover, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding our boutique wine tour company. We would like to Apologize that you were not happy with the service that was provided for you . First of all the price you mentioned in Australian Dollars it was NOT for just 3 wineries. We started with a breakfast with Empanadas a bottle of Carmenere and Grounded Coffees that you requested at the end to go and you did not like. Then we continue to the first winery where i did a private tasting (was not included) that you say was very enjoyable. We continue for lunch where you requested some help with the payment of the tour that until then you did not pay yet. I asked the chefs computer to help you out. I explained every single plate with the ingredients and way of making it and why we choose that specific wine. After you did some shopping we left to the last winery where you have a private tasting too. Now the price included also a transfer to Vina del Mar NOT to ConCon,where you were staying, After a 3rd called i made from my phone to find out where it was the appartment you rented the contact told me to leave you in vina del mar and you take a taxi from there and then he will contact you later because for safety I took you was farther away that we agreed ,even though it was not included I took a different road toward Con Con and i did not want you to take a taxi and offer you to look for the place. Finally i found it and contact again the owner of the apartment in order to let him know that you arrive. Left you there and you were VERY happy and gave me a gratuity. So, in other words it was not only 3 wineries like you mentioned ( breakfast, transfer to Con Con ) but if you still did not like our services please contact me directly and i will give you the money back . We are deeply sorry if this inconvenience caused you any trouble and you are more than welcome to use our services again in order to try a lot harder to make sure that you will have a unique experience. Kindest regards, Mauricio Rodriguez Masserano Owner

We booked a one full day tour for 6 people. Shortly before the trip we were contacted by Mauricio and asked if we minded having a bigger van as he wanted to bring the parents of some friends. We agreed expecting 2 additional people.

However, when the pickup arrived he had added another six people to the tour without prior consultation or advice.

Mauricio is very knowledgeable about his country and wine with a great passion and intimate understanding of both. His knowledge of wine is not resticed to Chile and he has a good understanding of most wine regions around the world.

Wineries he took us to were interesting and the food we were served at the the two places we ate was excellent.

For the cost of $190 US per head with the expectation of tips at the restaurant and for the driver you find however, you pay a premium price for a less than premium service. Given the addition of 6 people to the tour I think a fair expectation would be a reduction in price for all.

This coupled with a lack of credit card facilites and the lack of a professional business attitude makes it difficult to recommend Chilean Wine Lovers Private Tours to other TA readers.

Mauricio collected us from our hotel in Santiago for a wonderful day in the Casablanca Valley. Starting with empanadas at a small restaurant on the way, it was a day of interesting food & wine, accompanied by Mauricio's running commentary on everything from geology to the social issues facing Chile. We found this tour great value for money and can highly recommend Mauricio as a tour guide.

The trips are advertised as private tours. This is misleading. The owner is a broker/ tour guide. He hires drivers and arranges tours at wineries. You travel in his vans privately or in private groups - we were just the two of us in the van. However, when you arrive at the wineries, you are grouped with as many as ten from other tours. Lunches are provided along with water. We made note that we wanted mostly chardonnay tastings and that my wife did not eat red meat. We stayed at the airport - this was noted as an up charge due to the distance from downtown Santiago. The contracted driver lived ten minutes from our hotel and remedied the intineries from Maurice to match our requests. Without his direct intervention, we would have had chardonnay only twice out of six wineries and been taken to a restaurant that only served red meats.

Our hero was the driver Leo. Spoke excellent English. On the way to our first of six wineries, he heard for the first time of our want to taste chardonnay and of our dietary needs. He interceded at three wineries to get us private tastings of chardonnay and changed the restaurant to one that served chicken. There are apparently two levels or perhaps more of tastings. We found out in the end that premium wineries are offered.

These are full day events. The key is your driver - they make the trip best for you. Many thanks to Leo.

We booked a tour with Mauricio after reading reviews on TripAdvisor, and are happy to report that all those good reviews are accurate. Mauricio was prompt, knowledgable, and quite entertaining. We have been to quite a few wine regions in other part of the world but knew nothing about Chilean wine, and not much about the culture. From the moment he picked us up, Maurico gave us excellent explanations of the culture, the politics, the history and the geography of Chile. He then went into the particulars of the different wine regions, different varietals and the different growing conditions. We felt he tailored his information to a good level of detail based on our existing knowledge of wine. He arranged tastings at some very unusual and excellent wineries, and even worked with the chef at one place to create a tasting menu paired with their wines. It was exactly the kind of experience we were looking for; we could not have asked for anything more. We would highly recommend booking a tour with Chilean Wine Lovers!

My partner and I booked a tour with Mauricio of Chilean Wine Lovers Tours having a limited knowledge of wines but a desire to learn more and visit a winery in Santiago. We had an extraodinary day with Mauricio. What can we say about this personable, enthusiastic and "genuine" man other than his tour was a reflection of what he loves to do. That includes teaching, sharing and interacting with his clients while tailoring each tour to their specific needs. Our tour included a complete history of the founding of Santiago along with details of cultural trends, lifestyles of it's citizens and even detail of historical architecture within the city. We then spent a wonderful afternoon at the Perez Cruz winery and it's surroundings below the Andes Mountains. Our in depth tour of the beautiful vineyard along with wine tastings was followed by a superb "homestyle" multi course lunch in Maipo at a restaurant frequented by the locals which gave us a true flavor of traditional Chilean foods. Already fans of empanadas, we were also taken to a bakery where aromatic empanadas were prepared and baked in olde world ovens.... a treat to watch and savor ! If you have a desire to have a memorable experience visiting Cile you will not be find a more competant guide than Mauricio.
