For over 2 years, between 1973-1975, this building was used by the dictatorship-era secret police known as DINA. An estimated 2000 people were illegally detained in this house. 98 of them disappeared or were executed, including two pregnant women. Most were under 30 years old and eight were under 20. This house was used as a torture chamber. Of the four major clandestine centers in Santiago, Londres 38 is the only one that was destroyed. Free admission. Open 10-1 and 3-6. English brochure available. A staff member that was available spoke English well and was available to answer questions.

Londres 38 is a building in the city center of Santiago. It was used by the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA) as a place of detention and torture of opponents of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Could not visit from inside as it was closed at that time. Certainly worth a photo stop to grasp the dark history of Santiago.

The sign says they will open someday whenever that may be. Looks like they are doing work inside. If you go look on the sidewalk in front and see the names in the cobblestone.

This was the pre-coup Socialist party HQ which the coup used as one of its interrogation and torture centres. The interior is rough as it was left. You are told what each room was and there are quotes from survivors. It helps to understand Spanish. You can use your imagination here to think about what went on here.
