As we visited on a Monday, the fort in Niebla was closed, however, those on the islands of Corral and Mancera were open. During the peak tourist time, February, there is a ferry to either island every 20 minutes. The ride to isla Corral takes about half an hour. There are no ferries between Corral and Mancera, one has to go over Niebla. From the ferry one can see all 3 forts, or rather the ruins that remain of these forts.
The fort on Corral island is at sea level and has a well preserved wall facing the sea with several little watch towers. There are also some canons still standing, all making for some great views. Nothing else remains of the fort. This was the last fort to fall on mainland Chile, and during summer there is a daily reenactment of the storming of this fort in the afternoon. That is why all the boats from Valdivia leave at about 13:30. But it is open also in the morning, and can be easily reached by public transport, there is a bus every 10 minutes or less to Niebla.

Enjoyed the ferry ride to corral. We found one small Spanish fort where they were having a reenactment of a battle. Nice place to visit. Entrance fee was $5 per person.

The fortress of Niebla is a very visual way to establish a connection between the history and the heritage of the colonial time in Chile, you do not have to pay because it's for free. The landscapes that you can see are amazing, and also is incredible the way that conquers build the whole fortification in order to defend the territory of foreigner colonies.
you can download the aplication PlayOnTag and listen audioguides and see pictures, and other facilities.
Also you can look for a tour guide, there are a lot that works for tips, there are facilities for disabled people.

It's wonderful to see how well preserved is the Niebla fort. There is also a nice house that explains all the historical milestones around it, and see how Belgians, British, Germans and Spaniards melted to form one unique countryside. Go learn!

All the history of the city is about the forts so you must go and if you are lucky to have touristic guides in the place, the best. These forts are the best way to know about the culture of the city.

An easy drive from Valdivia to Niebla brought us to the ferry to Corral. There we found the Castillo de Corral in a strategic position covering the approach to Valdivia. It was one of 18 locations, including forts at Niebla and on the island of Mancera dating back to the 1600s. In 1820 Lord Cochrane led a daring land attack against the forts which were garrisoned by troops loyal to the Spanish crown. Cochrane's victory at Valdivia was an important step in Chile's fight for independence.

When we arrived, the museum and the Niebla site was closed. Works have been going on for 3 years to date. Best to check before you come. Visiting the forts was one of our planned highlights so we were very disappointed.
