Six friends stopping in Puerto Montt on our cruise ship booked an all day private excursion to see the area sights. Wow, what a wonderful day we had with Andres. He was extremely responsive via email answering our questions and semi customizing a tour for us. He arrived promptly in the morning to meet us and got us back to the port in plenty of time before the last tender.
We first drove up to the ski center base at Osorno Volcano where we were among the first to arrive. From there we had a nice circular hike to take in the amazing views. It was awesome to have the place almost to ourselves. We were blessed with a clear day with no wind. It was so quiet we could hear the voices of a small group on a distant hill as well as the crunch of our shoes on the volcanic rock. As we drove back down we knew how lucky we had been when we saw 5 busloads driving up.
Next we made a brief stop for our first look at the Petrohue River before heading to Lago Todos los Santos (All Saints Lake). The road to the lake was under construction and the drive was slow going with the traffic and very dusty. Not Andres fault for sure, and a paved road will be a much better experience for future visitors. The lake was a very pretty Emerald green color and, with the mountains in the background and the black sand beach, made a stunning picture.
Our next destination were the trails at Petrohue River & Falls in Vincente Morales Perez National Park. On our drive to the lake we passed the parking lot for this area and we noticed it was very crowded with numerous buses and cars. When we arrived, all the buses were gone and we snagged a parking spot right by the entrance. Although the falls had visitors, they were in small groups and everyone had photo ops without strangers in their view. Once again Andres found the perfect timing for this portion of our day.
We were provided with water and a bag of snacks. Andres knew all about the geology of the area, all the names of the mountain peaks, the industry of the area as well as the plants and birds. He was personable, spoke English very well and was all around very knowledgable.
Our final stop was in Puerta Varas where he dropped us off at a park on Llanquihue Lake which was very picturesque. From there it was a short walk to the charming town square where we enjoyed a nice walk admiring the German influence architecture. We were lucky to hear musicians playing different sized pipe instruments.
I highly recommend Andres. His expertise, knowledge and love of the area is apparent. Both travelers wishing a laid back or a physically active experience will be happy with Andres. P.S. We found Andres through ToursByLocals but now he has his own website.

Andres and his team delivered the most amazing experience in the beautiful and friendly country of Chile. From being pickup at the airport to all the excursions and experiences from Santiago to Puerto Varas with the Andes Mountains always in our view . Patagonia Southern Land Expeditions planned our custom trip to include the most amazing variety of adventures from museums and markets to wineries and hikes. They helped us learn about and explore central Chile and southern Patagonia with its breathtaking lakes and volcanoes and delicious local foods. We even saw our first penguins in the wild on the beautiful island of Chiloe. I cannot say enough about Andres. He and I communicated for over a year planning our trip and he was responsive and helpful in every way. He went out of his way to assure our comfort and fun! The program was flawless! We hope to return one day and will certainly call on Andres and his team!

I hired Andres via a recommendation through Tours By Locals for an excursion in Chiloe. I told him my main focus was the group of UNESCO churches scattered throughout the area and gave him the freedom to attach any other add-ons along the way. The trip began and ended in Puerto Montt, with the obligatory ferry crossing to Chacao kicking off the festivities. The first day was spent driving around the countryside ostensibly to see the first seven buildings but with an added bonus of getting a glimpse of the countryside; an overnight stay at a boutique hotel in Castro with a dinner by sunset was the perfect coda. The next seven churches were visited the following day with a stop at a local market (a favorite event for this traveler) woven into the tour. We then went through the interior of the island and landed on the Pacific Coast a remote hotel with a wood burning hot tub (!) to boot. The final day was spent visiting the interior of the Franciscan church in Castro, shopping for souvenirs and touring the Church Museum in Ancud; I even had the option of taking a boat to see some penguins but I politely declined, having visited the tuxedoed birds in Tierra Del Fuego in 2019. I was back at the airport in plenty of time for my flight to Santiago.
In summary, I have taken probably close to one hundred tours in almost twenty years of international travel and I would have to rate Andres as one of the top four or five guides I have ever had. First, his punctuality and timing were impeccable; he was clearly familiar with the area and not a second was wasted. Second, his attention to detail was superb. Snacks were refilled, ideal places for pictures pointed out, and preferences for souvenirs accommodated. Next, he was flexible. No guide can predict every variable in even a day-tour, but he dealt with weather issues and unexpected closures of attractions impeccably. Lastly and most importantly for this reviewer, his knowledge of Chiloe was excellent. Not only did I learn about the churches but also about plants, animals, food, the modern daily life of the Chiloeans and their past mythology, etc.
I would highly recommend this guide to anyone who wants a tour in his area of operations. Superb.

We were a group of 8 friends who booked a personalized tour with Andres. Andres and his driver Jorge provided us with a wonderful one day trip that included a visit to see the natural beauty of the area, a stop in one of the beautiful little towns, and ended with a tour of Puerto Montt. Andres' knowledge of the area provided some excellent insights. His friendly and helpful demeanour made this one of our favourite days on our trip. We highly recommend booking with Andres, not only for one day trips but even longer stays. His expertise and recommendations based on our discussions ensured for a high quality tour.

A bucket list dream trip fulfilled! Andres is an experienced professional outdoor guide who crafted the perfect itinerary for our diverse family group of 8 people in the Chilean Lake District. We hiked in 3 national parks, toured lakes by boat, explored local architecture, handcrafts and eateries. He is professional, friendly and genuinely enjoys answering questions about local wildlife, geology, culture and history. Highly recommend you go with Andres, would absolutely hire Patagonia Southern Land Expeditions again for another tour.

Was so impressed with Andres and his Patagonia Southern Land Expeditions company. Andres met us in Puerto Varas and guided our group of 10 on a 9-day excursion. This included Chiloe Island (motorboat tour of penguin colony, USNESCO churches tours and Castro tour), 4 day hikes (Desolacion trail hike, Volcan Casablanca, El Cani and Quetripillan volcano), and Termas Geometricas.
We stayed in very comfortable, yet unique and eco friendly lodging, and we ate delicious local cuisine each day, ranging from seafood platters in Puerto Varas to Mapuche asado at local homes that raised their own crops and livestock. Having celiac, I was concerned about my food options, but Andres worked diligently to ensure that I had no issues whatsoever with exposure. Andres also made sure there were vegan options for those in our group.
We traveled throughout the Lakes region in a very comfortable 15 passenger van that fit us and our luggage. We stopped to explore local shopping areas and take pictures during longer travel days.
I did not imagine I would be able to fit so much into 9 days, and I'm so grateful that Andres provided such a varied and activity-filled Chilean adventure. Additionally, Andres speaks excellent English and translated well for our group. I would highly recommend his services.

We had such an amazing time on our tour of Chiloe Island. Our guide Andres had so much knowledge and helped us see so many of the bird species we were hoping to see, including the Magellanic penguins! He created a customized 2 day bird watching excursion for us and we could not have been more pleased. We were only able to go for an overnight trip from Santiago and he was so flexible and really listened to our needs. We were even blessed with a rare sighting of a Pudu deer! We highly recommend Patagonia Southern Land Expeditions!

Andres took care of every little detail to give our group of 12 people an amazing experience this February! He took us to Chiloe island first including a boat trip to see penguins, then we headed north to hike the Paso Desolacion around Osorno, then up Volcan Casablanca and Volcan Quetropillan. He also arranged a hike up to Mirador El Cani with one of the rangers. He set us up in amazing lodgings (the cabins at Aguas Calientes were excellent!) and also arranged a Curanto with Sra Maria on Chiloe and three dinners with Mapuche families around Currarehue. He was always looking for ways to share the best of Chile with us. So knowledgable, excellent english, he worked very hard to accommodate our gluten free and vegan travelers. I just can't say enough about his amazing service and commitment!

Enjoyed a 7 day excursion with Andres around the lakes district. In addition to Andres' knowledge of local flora and fauna one can tell that cultural history is near and dear to his heart. After a day of hiking and learning the common name of a particular item we were also informed of the indigenous name. For supper we would eat with a Mapuche family to enjoy a wonderful meal and learn about Mapuche history and culture. Getting to know local families and making a connection was a highlight of the trip. For a truly personal experience and tailored to your needs I recommend Andres and his Patagonia Southern Land Expeditions

Me and my husband arrive in Osorno city on the 30th and would like to take a day trip to Osorno volcano on the 31st. Is that possible from that city or only from Puerto Varas? If yes, how much would it cost?
Thanks in advance

How is the water temp around Christmas time? Is there snorkeling? Is there any wildlife?
Written May 3, 2016
To be honest, I don't know.... plus you are covering a lot of ground in what is considered Patagonia. I'm sure there are internet sites that will give you very specific trends and site seeing opportunities.
A way to look at it is to view the southern parallel's ( from the 48th to the 60th) and compare them to the northern counterparts... about Seattle to Anchorage. I can tell you that there were no snorkeling/scuba offerings / or tours. There are whales , dolphins, sea lions, penguins and then quite a few bird species that are only found in the south.
