It is an active volcano located in the Lakes Region. It had different eruptions, the last one occurred in 2015, with seismic movements and ash clouds that caused many people to be evacuated. We could see it from Puerto Varas. Perhaps next to Osorno it loses a bit of prominence, but it still looks impressive with its snowy summit.

take the time to do the ascent and breath the fresh air. Not taxing and well worth it. Joos Icsbroux our guide and the driver Roberto Torres who worked for the Quincho Country House were extremely helpful and friendly. Contact them for your touring needs through the hotel

It's a cool place but volcanic ash from April cuts down on activities. Worth going but would be better in a year or so.

My husband and I arranged to climb this volcano with a local guide. While the guide was fantastic - I can't understate how difficult the climb was. We have "climbed" several (hiking / scrambling) mountains around the world and have also completed many multi-day treks, but an ascent of 1500 vertical meters over 6kms (12kms return - taking 10 hours) involving relentless volcanic scree and then snow/ice was way more physically and mentally exhausting than we realised.
Not having ever climbed on snow/ice before, we were terrified the whole time of slipping and sliding down the mountain. In hindsight it probably wasn't quite as dangerous as it felt, but it certainly isn't easy and I would only recommend for the super fit and mentally strong.
On the plus side - the views from Calbuco of Osorno and other surrounding volcanos is AMAZING. Volcan Calbuco itself is very interesting with its history of erruptions and the changes they have made to the mountain. Also, it was a real eye opener for us to get a taste of "real" mountain climbing using crampons, harnesses, ropes and poles etc.
It wasn't for us but it might be for you!

I was in Puerto Varas during Calbuco's eruption (April 2015) (seen from far and nowhere near town) and the power of nature gave me a view of its beauty and power. What an incredible one in a life time experience!
While it's dormant, it feels like a big dormant giant... when it lit up, it was just colossal.

Remember it rains 260 days a year in this region. Even in the summer time it is likely that the volcano will be hidden behind clouds.
If you are lucky and it is a clear day you will have a great view of the volcano from Puerto Varas.

While Osorno is the Volcano that most people come to see in this area, Calbuco is also worth a look. While not as beautiful or iconic as Osorno, Calbuco is more active and more recently active (as recently as April of 2015). We saw it mostly from Puerto Varas but it could also be seen from Puerto Montt.

This volcano reaches over a mile into the sky. It is still active and last erupted in 2015. The views from here are spectacular.

Although this volcano is not as typical as Osorno in shape and it doesn't seem as large, it is active and poses a much greater threat to the area and has caused extensive damage in the very recent past. So keep your distance and admire from safety.

Felizmente não peguei esse episódio pois, estivemos no Chile em Janeiro de 2015 e estava tudo muito bonito, um passeio que realmente vale a pena fazer. O visual dos vulcões simplesmente é extraordinário.
