Tour of Lake Llanquihue - Common bicycle vs E-Bike
I went around the Lake on my chromoly bicycle, adapted for an unplanned trip of 3/4 days. They are about 170/180 very pleasant kms, with interesting demands. Once the tour was finished, to test it I rented an electric bicycle, and did the circuit again one day. Highly recommended for cycling tourism, in populated areas, with nearby cities, with traffic and without bike lanes. It gives a lot of autonomy and freedom and makes the bicycle trip very enjoyable!! At daily averages of 60/70 km the trip really becomes very accessible!!

RENT A CAR AND GO EXPLORE!!
I firmly believe that the best way to get to know the lake and its surroundings is by car, plus you can go your way, stopping where you want, as long as you want. Unfortunately we went right into limbo, where the summer activities had already ended and the winter activities had not really started, so most of the places and towns we visited were closed and/or deserted. Still, the views you have from anywhere on the lake are breathtaking and thoroughly enjoyed! If you can, avoid going between May and June which is when everything is dead!

    Second largest lake in Chile
Lake Llanquihue, the second largest in Chile, dominates most landscapes in the Puerto Varas region, especially those where the Osorno Volcano is part of the scene. It is a very important lake for the region, not only for tourism but also for the local economy. It is interesting the black and rocky color of its sands.

We drove around lake Llanquihue (which is pronounced junkihue) as a day trip from Puerto Varas. Although the day started off overcast and rainy it ended being sunny and glorious. The road is amazing and circles the lake. It is approximately 170kms to make a full round of the lake. We stopped in various points of interests like the Petrohue falls and Frutillar but generally the area around the lake is of unbelievable beauty and offers great spots for walking and simply enjoying the country side.

We spent the whole day doing a road trip right around the lake. We went clockwise. The road is now sealed all the way around. We also took a couple of highly recommended side trips; one up Volcan Osorno and the other to the Saltos de Petrohue (which I will review separately). Views of the lake came and went, but the best things were the side trips and the towns along the way; Puerto Varas, Frutillar, and Puerto Octay. All germanic towns but each with their own flavour.

We drove past this beautiful lake on the way to the Petrohué Waterfalls and a cruise on Lake Todos los Santos. Then we stopped at Puerto Varas for li=unch at the Raddison and some shopping. This was a beautiful lake to visit on a fantastic day.

When our cruise ship shore excursion couldn't reach Osomo Volcano and Petrohue Falls because of washed-out roads, we spent most of the day driving around this massive lake, Chile's second-largest, looking for things to do.

The big attraction, of course, is the beautiful views of Osomo Volcano across the lake. The clouds that washed out our trip sadly washed out that view as well.

We went to see Teatro del Lago, a beautiful theater right on the lake but, alas, the rains seem to have washed away whoever was supposed to unlock the doors that day. We stood outside for a while and moved on (see my review, "Mistake on the lake").

The highlight of the day? Cerveceria 860, a brewery we weren't supposed to stop at, delighted me, but only after I went to its restroom (see my review, "Don't use the restrooms, marvel at them").

We spent almost a day driving around the lake and discovered a stunningly beautiful part of chile. The view is constantly changing: mountains, volcanoes, lake, forests, green meadows, gently rolling hills and charming little towns like german influenced Frutillar or Puerto Octay. A must do when you are in the area.

We stayed seven nights at the Hotel Bellavista in Puerto Varas and every morning we had the best views of Lake Llanquihue and the Osorno Volcano. Walking along the coast and being able to have such a landscape was a luxury on this vacation. The waters are very cold, but the locals don't mind too much and enjoy taking a dip. We were also able to admire it from Frutillar and in Puerto Octay. Different photos but the same beauty.

Large lake in Chile. Lots of places to swim, kayak, boat, etc. Puerto Varas is the biggest town on the lake, an excellent place to stay to access all Lago Llanquihue has to offer!

We spent the day in Puerto Varas and then drove around the Lago Llanquihue. As one reviewer pointed out, the lake is exceptionally large...but has amazing views regardless of what side one is on. Obviously, the view with the volcano is the most popular, but there are also pretty little houses all along the lake and of course Puerto Varas is a beautiful little town. Definitely worth the time and effort to drive at least part way around the lake. The scenery is terrific.

The Llanquihue Lake has a number of historic towns on its shores. We drove most of the way around it and saw Puerto Octay, Frutillar, Puerto Varas and Ensenada.

There are great views of Osorno Volcano from different angles around the lake.

My husband tried a spot of fishing on the lake but didn’t catch anything. There are a few beaches around different spots in the lake also and the water was not too cold in summer.

We were told that this is the 2nd largest lake in South America. There are many vacation rentals available amidst lovely rolling farmlands and Puerto Varas is a delightful town with a German heritage. It is obviously a popular vacation spot!
