We parked up just before the ranger station in the middle sector - sector Quetrupllian. You can drive on further but only in a truck or land-rover, we couldn't pass even in a utility vehicle as the track is so bad.
So we hiked the first 4km on the track through the woods, which is pretty steep in places, before we entered the trail proper to the glacier, which is another 4km. This is the best part of the hike, of course. Wooded with lots of monkey puzzle trees to start with, then opens out on the lava field, with streams, mini waterfalls and rock strata, which you walk through to the glacier and a tremendous view of the volcano. It's the other side that you see from Pucon and more snow covered.
Total return journey was four hours, plus stops for lunch and photos. Got great shots of a juvenile condor and red headed woodpecker.
Very worthwhile hike.

We left Pucon after breakfast heading to Villarrica National Park, which covers an immense area in the Araucania region and is divided into sectors. We visited Setor Puesco, which is on the way up towards Argentina. We walked to the Chilean customs border post and from there, after several stops, we made our way back. It's an excellent tour, which in my opinion, to be well enjoyed, should be reserved for at least five hours. The road is very beautiful and the untouched nature that surrounds it is splendid. In this region we can see the Lanin volcano, which is on the border between Chile and Argentina, and the Quetrupillan volcano. The view of Lake Quilleihue is also beautiful. On the way back, we stopped by a microbrewery, called Puesco, which is next to a rapid and sells great beers, of which we took a few bottles to taste at the hotel. All in all, the trip was really worth it!

These walks are incredibly easily accessible and hardly anyone goes. Just make sure to check the weather. No point going unless it's a clear day. And bring layers because it can change quickly and become quite cold.

The volcano dominates the landscape for miles around but a visit highlights the lava flows and the terrain which is bolcanic tovk.
Spectacular views of Lake Villaricca abound on the heights.
The area is being developed as noted with all the building activity on the road up to the mountain witb condos being built for milez on bogh sides of the road.

The close-up views of Villarrica/Rukapillan volcano are worth the trip, even if you don't hike. You can go up to the ski area and even take a guided walk up to the top, a strenuous hike over snow requiring you slide down to get back down. I did not dare.

I had fallen earlier in the week and had an injured knee that needed a walking stick. I was able to get around the trails mostly on my own. There's a handful of tricky spots where I held my wife's hand but I felt that even if I needed full crutches I would not have had to miss out.
Also the restaurant Refugio Sur is amazing for the service, the advice, and the pisco sours.

Amazing view, if you are in shape you can go to the top. But if not just go by car as far as you can safely go and you will have a great view.

Enjoyed the woods and the water running throughout. The views of the volcanoes make an exceptional background to beautiful photos.

Saludos
