One of the best experiences we had in Chile. We climbed the Volcano under the very experienced guidance of Juan from Riverstonk found in Pucon. (They were very reasonably priced) He was really funny and very knowledgeable. He made us feel safe at all times. It is an amazing climb, can be difficult at times but it’s worth it when you get to the top and look into the crater. Unfortunately we did not see any magma but heard lots of activity which you could feel and smell too. (We were kitted out with gas masks and everything else you needed to make a successful ascent and descent). The views above the clouds are breathtaking.
The descent is so much fun. We got to slide down the snow covered mountain on plastic slides. Again given all the equipment you would need to make this safe and to keep you as dry as possible. I would 100% recommended doing this if you have the time.

The view of the Volcano from the city of Pucon is amazing! We made several tours in the surroundings like the station, the Cuevas and many Waterfalls... The trail los Lagos was a high point! I highly recommend including this region in your itinerary, in my case we stayed 3 days in Pucon and 3 days in Puerto Varas!

An absolutely belting day - best thing we did in Pucon … found a really nice guiding company called Zenit.

Up at 6.30 am with our sandwiches, sun cream and plenty of water and chocolate.

It’s a solid 5 or 6 hours to get as high as permitted (August 23 the final 300 metres are closed for safety reasons) and in total a 9 hour day but the views over the Andes, Villarica lake and the other volcanoes are stunning and it’s a wonderful feeling being so high under your own steam. Hope photos do it justice but this is one of those things you have just gotta do.

Clampons, Ice axes and a knowledgeable Guide are essential. Don’t do it alone or the bad spirits will ensure you slip off..

We enjoyed this monument to the power of nature at a distance. There are many walking tours up the volcano but they were too strenuous for us. We chose to drive to the base where the chairlift starts and go on the chairlift. Sadly it was not operating the day we went. This is apparently common. However it did not stop us enjoying the volcano and it’s majesty. We went for some short walks, got a coffee, and toured the caves

The guided hike to the top was “open” but you could not do the last 1,000 feet and there was no snow to slide down, so Mirador de Los Crateres seemed a better option. So glad we did it.

This was an amazing hike. The views of Villarica and the lakes are great. The view back to the mountains when you are near the top are something out of Avatar. The craters were fascinating. We enjoyed the hike itself too. We did the 5 miles round trip in about 2.75 hours, stopping many times to appreciate the views and take pictures. My friend’s apple watch said there was 1,200 feet of elevation gain. There were stretches of no view through the forest, but the vegetation was interesting to look at then.

The place is very easy to find in real life, not so easy on google maps. If leaving Pucon on 199, make the first left onto S-887 (Camino Al Volcan). Take that about 30 minutes. When you get into the Villarica Park (where there is a ranger offering info and some small stores offering zip lining and the like), stay left onto the bumpy dirt road. After 4 KMs, you’ll see a parking lot on your right. Walk up the hill, bearing left on the road you drove in on, and you’ll see the sign to start the hike. Then follow the posts from there.

Climbing this was hard and fun, we did it with Mawida, a local tourism firm. Everything was great, the day, the guide (Javier), the equipment and the fun way of sliding downhill.
The most recommended adventure in town.

We did not climb the whole volcano! As seniors, we opted to go to the ski resort (January is summer) and there were many trails to follow all up and down the slope. We went up to the high lift and (paid for) a ride down. Wear real hiking shoes though, my gym shoes took a bit of a beating. Very nice day.

Take an Uber to the chairlift and then walk a long way to the top of the volcano. Quite heavy due to the magma stones, which can cause you to slide down quickly. But we were rewarded with breathtaking views.
In a word: fantastic!
Only a surprise: there is no Uber to pick you up there, so we also walked for miles towards Pucon. So keep that in mind

It was a weekend trip, accompanied by a lot of rain. Pucón is a land used to receiving tourists. We chose two very nice tourist homes, in which the hosts gave us great references of places to visit.
Wonderful waterfalls, dense and lush vegetation, beautiful landscapes!

We hiked the 4 km Craters trail. The trail climbs gradually through a forested section midway up the volcano. As the altitude rises, there’s a transition in the ecosystems to tundra. At 3 km there’s a scenic overlook where you can see Lake Villarrica and the other volcanoes in the park. The trail ends where magma from eruptions in the 1970s and 1980s destroyed large areas of vegetation. There are two small craters where gasses vented during these eruptions and give
the trail its name, but these are less interesting aspects of the walk. The photo is the view of the volcano at the end of the trail, which was not too far from the snow line when we visited on the first few days of summer. The return hike follows the same trail downhill.
