COST: All hikes in El Chalten are FREE!
1. Duration: the hike takes about 3 hours each way, if walking at a moderate pace, and summer time gets warm so start early (8am). You will also have the trail relatively to yourselves at this time.
2. Distance and terrain: 18km round trip from the start of the trail. The trail is rocky in some parts and requires a little bit of climbing but very manageable.
3. Dress: We hiked in sneakers/takkies but most people wore hiking boots and brought hiking poles (not entirely necessary for this trail, but may be a nice to have). Dress in layers, the wind off the lake at the end was quite chilly but the return hike in the sun can be very hot.
4. Where to start: the hike begins towards the "back end" of the town. You can use the road or the black steps to acsend to the upper road and then walk towards Apartamento Kaiken, where you will see a marker for the start of the trail. It starts on a steep sandy uphill.
5. If you have survived the Mount Fitz Roy hike, this will be WAY easier.
P.S. don't forget to pack water- there is a river you can drink from but it's about 6-7kms along the trail.

As mentioned before, the weather can be the worst enemy for this hike.
The wind was incredibly strong building some nice waves on the Laguna Torre...
It is not a difficult hike but, at least in the approach, the wind can really make it harder.
Nonetheless the view is just fantastic and makes any difficulties disappear from our minds.

Simply loved the hike to the lake below Cerro Torre. Amazing views and the lake had huge chunks of ice which added to the adventure. The steep vertical walls of Cerro Torre were extremely impressive. I understand first hand why this mountain is one of the most difficult peaks to summit in the world. Given the vertical walls and extreme winds and weather of Patagonia its amazing that anyone has ever stood on top of that mountain.

This is a great hike if you are in the area. We spent the whole day on the mountain. This is definitely a must-do activity if you are in Patagonia.

The hike to Mt. Fitz Roy and Laguna de los Tres is definitely the must-do hike from El Chalten, but this is a beautiful mountain and the hike is much more moderate. The mountain is in view (on a good weather day) for a majority of the hike to Laguna Torre and there are lots of great lookouts.
Laguna Torre can be extremely windy, as it was for us. The guide at the start of the trail advised us not to continue on part of the trail that goes beyond the lake and she was right. Never experienced wind gusts that strong in my life. Come prepared and bring eye protection as the wind enjoyed hurling tiny rocks at my face. It made it hard to appreciate the view when we arrived, so it was a 4-star rating day for us, but nevertheless it deserves five stars.

Cerro Torre is considered one of the most hard climbs in the world. But you don't need to climb it to experience the mountain. The trail to the lake takes you very close to ''her''. Not easy, though. Be fit and take your time to do it.

You hear more about the climb up Los Tres, but this walk was our favourite. It helped that the weather was lovely, and the winds not too bad. Great views, constantly changing scenery, and just enough hard work to make it feel worth while. Return by a slightly different loop to get a taste of woodland walking.

For the ones who like trekking this is a good sendero to go trekking with beautiful views, not as difficult nor as long as Laguna de Los Tres. the trails are well signed and the view when you get to the Laguna is wonderful. Don't forget to bring something to eat, as the round trip is about 10km with hight difference of about 400m. Enjoying the nature, the views, taking pictures... took us about 6 hours trekking.

This granite needle is easy to see from the road coming from El Calafate to El Chalten. You can get closer by an easy trek of 20km (between 5 and 6 hours return) arriving at the lake on the base of the mountain with stunning views of the peaks around, the lake and the glaciers.

Hi. Does anyone know how long it takes to get from cerro torre base to cerro torre summit and back to cerro torre base? In other words, does anyone know how long the full climb is? And also, what is the altitude of cerro torre base?
