As cruise ship passengers, we took this tour to see the penguins at volunteer point with Estancia- it was half the cost of the ship’s own tour to the point. It was pretty much a full day trip and was one of the best day trips I have ever been on. It took around 2 hours to get to Volunteer Point from Port Stanley in a land rover carrying 4 of us. The first half was on roads and then the second half off road largely across peat. Yes it was very bumpy, but it wAs also great fun. Our driver was the Dad of the lady who runs the business and he was really knowledgeable about the Falklands having lived there all his life. Nothing could prepare us for how wonderful the Volunteer Point nature reserve was. The stars of the show are the King Penguins. There are around 3000 couples at the point and they are just stunning. It was a real privilege to be part of their lives for a couple of hours. We split our time between the beach watching small groups of penguins enter the sea and the rookery. They largely seemed to be oblivious to us being there. The two hours whizzed by and at the end we were provided with a pack lunch (sandwich, crisps, penguin bar!) before returning to Stanley. A tour of Stanley at the end in the Land Rover was included. I can’t recommend this trip enough. Others on our cruise went up other destinations, but this seemed to be the best for seeing large numbers of penguins

Wow, thank you very much for a fantastic review. Volunteer Point is indeed the best penguin tour (in my opinion). I'm very pleased to hear that you had a great day!

We had an amazing experience at Volunteer Point with Estancia. Booking was very easy through FB Messenger with regular follow-up and confirmation. Our driver, Ken, went above and beyond to make our day as special as it was. We were very fortunate with great weather and will definitely book with Estancia Excursions again.

We were really excited about this shore excursion. I booked it over 12 months ago (Nyree - super professional & responsive). Our guide was the divine Mrs Tara. We shared with 2 others from the cruise (and we all had an absolute hoot!) 1 hour of decent tarred & gravel road, then 1 hour of back breaking, dipping & slipping across grassy disguised pot-holed tracks. Such skillfil driving & manouvering by our Tara. The King Penguins were ready to show off, such characters. We saw mums and dads, babies, eggs. We saw two girls slapping a boy around with their flippers, vying for his attention. Home to King, Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. Flat & Easy to wander around - don't rush, take your time, be respectful. The penguins have right of way. Stand still and let them approach you. Go down to the beach to watch them swim and catch fish. Absolutely loved the Kings, their showiness, the interaction, their dance moves and their chatter. Heaps of time to soak it up. Boxed lunch & thank you goodies too. On the way back, look for the Stone Runs (unusual rock formations) and a quick stop at Boot Hill (where people leave a shoe/boot behind so they will return to the island). Tara showed us around town, and dropped us off in town to explore Christ Church Cathedral, whale bone arch, whale bone display in someone's yard, memorial to the Falkland War fallen, buy some souveniers and a jar of Diddle-Dee Jam!! Tara was an exceptional guide, one of the best people-person person we have ever been with and we loved our time with her. 10/10 for Team Estancia Excursions. BRILLIANT!

We had the best day with Estancia Excursions visiting Volunteer Point. Our guide was easy to find at the port and we immediately set out. The ride was great, some on roads and then quite a bit off road. The whole time our guide shared with us about living in the Falklands, what we should expect, her family& friends. She was happy to answer questions and made the time fly by. The penguin color was amazing. One of the greatest experiences ever. We had a couple of f hours to explore and take pictures and that we did. There were all ages of king penguins (eggs, babies, adolescents, and adults. Watching them enter the water was so entertaining. Just the best day!!

We booked this about 18 months in advance directly with the tour company (Nyree) for 140 GBP each. I will be honest, we always book excursions with non-ship providers because of the cost and smaller size, but I was a little hesitant on the price of this one. However, it was by far our favorite thing from our whole 2-week cruise, and it was well worth the money. The key differentiation (we only realized after taking other penguin tours in other places) is there are size limitations at the site, your car is limited to 4 tourists, and this location has 2 types of penguins and is a wild site where you interact with them in their environment. I will just say it was amazing to stand on the beach with them while they entered and exited, not to mention standing right next to the huge colony. At other sites, there are often TONS of tourists, such that they have to create tourist paths, rope them off, and then you are often far from the animals you are there to see. The road is about 2 hours each way, and some of it is incredibly bumpy and over wide open fields with no discernable road, but that is what made some of it an adventure. Our guide was a local and he talked non-stop with us answering our questions, describing life on the island, and just made the experience very friendly as opposed to transactional. Anyhow, no complaints here - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a wonderful review. There are in fact 3 types of penguin at Volunteer Point, but the Magellanic and Gentoo can look quite similar if it's your first time seeing them. :)
