About
Located within the depths of the historic and luxuriant Fort Canning Hill, the Battlebox is Singapore’s only World War II bunker that is still operational, albeit as a historic site, today. Built in 1936 and completed in 1939, the Battlebox served as the headquarters for the defending Allied forces against the invading Japanese army in the final days of the Malayan Campaign (8 Dec 1941 — 15 Feb 1942). It was here that Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival and 11 other commanders made the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese, resulting in possibly the greatest defeat of a British army ever in battle and the beginning of 3 ½ years of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. Today, the Battlebox has been restored with its rooms recreated based on historical records to what it could have been like during those final fateful days leading to the fall of Singapore.

    Well worth a visit.
Very interesting history, well presented. It is well worth a visit. Easy to find and close to the museum so can cover both places. Much bigger than we thought it would be. Run by volunteers who do a great job.

    Interesting Attraction
Battle box is back open and a very interesting place to visit. As you go through if you’ve taken your phone you can get a commentary on events that took place and about the 12 rooms. At the moment it is free, not sure if this will continue once it fully opens in February 24, with some additional features. Worth a visit if interested in WW2. Please note it is closed on a Monday and Tuesday.

This was one of the best places I have ever been when travelling. The staff are very helpful, and for just a small donation I was able to do the audio tour which was informative without being exhausting. It felt eerie being down in the bunker, and a great job has been done to make the rooms look like they would have in the early 1940’s. I learnt a lot about the fall of Singapore. Highly recommend a visit if you are interested in history.

Must see bunker exhibit for history buffs
We walked here from our hotel with no expectations and were blown away. The bunker is a must see for history buffs, especially if you are interested in Singapore during WWII. I am puzzled by the comments about the difficulty of online booking. The 6 of us walked up and had no trouble getting in nor in understanding the exhibits, which were awesome! It was a good complement to the National Museum across the street from this exhibit.

Excellent time capsule of the fall of Singapore
The staff are extremely helpful and guide you though the process of downloading the audio guide. They ask for a small donation - starting at $5 for the audio guide. I very much enjoyed the audio guide. The bunker has 12 rooms which have props and information on the wall. It is very well kept and very very interesting. Overall this one was one of the best things I did in Singapore. Definitely worth the $5 for the audio guide. Just make sure you bring headphones.

Having no prior knowledge of the significance of this underground bunker and its operation during the war against the Japanese the information given was both informative & accurate with the addition of archive films. it was also fascinating to see the actual rooms set out as they would have been used. It could be seen by some as a little expensive but we thought it was well worth the money

Was an experience that will stay with all of us for a very long time. The descriptive depiction by the Guide was so moving and palpable and put us directly in the picture regarding the extremely difficult situations that the team faced under such despairing circumstances. Certainly very well run and very well received by all. Thank you!!!

We were really impressed with our visit. The staff welcomed us and our young children and the knowledgeable tour guide did a wonderful job recreating the drama of the fall of Singapore. We were amazed by how effectively she created such drama and excitement from the simple remains of an underground bunker - this really was one of the highlights of our trip to Singapore.

We did a tour of the Battle Box and we walked there from our hotel through Fort Canning Park. Rodney was our tour guide, he was very informative and made our visit very interesting. We learnt much about the surrender of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and it was incredible to be in the very room where the momentous decision was made. The Battle Box is well set up with life like figures depicting the British Officers who were in the room and who made the fatal decision to capitulate. Highly recommended as an incredibly interesting place to visit to learn something about the history of Singapore and the British Empire.

My children enjoyed the trip very much. It is an eye opening tour for us. We get to see the original drawings by people who occupied the space during war time. Tour guide gives us alot of interesting information about what happened during that time.

Our Guide Shaun took us for the first tour of the day and we were absolutely amazed and the level of detail he explained. The site is well preserved and recreated for dramatic effect. If you don't know about the history of Singapore in WWII or even if you do, you should visit here and be a part of it. Truely amazing.

Viewing is by guided tour only but well worth booking in advance. The tour takes you through the Battlebox and via a combination of exhibits and commentary explains the circumstances preceding the surrender, the decision to surrender and the aftermath. Very, very well done. The tour lasted about 2 hours and was riveting.

With the Changi museum closed for renovation we choose this tour to give us an overview of Singapore's history during the 2nd World War. This really is a 'must visit' if you're interested in Singapore's modern history and Britain's imperialist past - which as you will discover on this tour was not always covered in heroic victories. On this occasion it signalled capitulation to the 'enemy' .
The tour was greatly helped by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide who ';walked' the group through the history of the Battlebox.
If you visit Singapore I would strongly suggest booking this tour (and book you must because it is very popular and the group size is strictly limited). The tour last just over an hour and is highly recommended.

We visited Battlebox on Monday 24th Feb 2020. I am absolutely amazed with the whole experience, beginning with exchange of emails discussing disability access, tour itself, knowledge, atmosphere, history, and exeptional staff and their friendliness.
I would like to express special thanks to Joanne for organizing the wheelchair for Mum and being so knowledgeable and interesting guide.
I recommend the visit to Battlebox while in Singapore. Don't miss it!

We went to battle-box recently while casually strolling in fort canning park. This underground bunker will give you a glimpse of history and the part of Singapore's history where important decisions were made by the British to surrender to the Japanese forces during world war 2. You ll find wax statues and things that were used in that era to sustain in that under ground bunker. Lots of information shared with us by the staff. It would recommend it to others as well.
