I have been living in Singapore for almost 3 years and Insomnia has become my regular place for a drink, some wonderful music, a dance and some fun. Unfortunately that all came to an end a week ago as the nightclub became the victim of a major redevelopment underway at Chijmes. Apparently it will not re-open as the lease had expired and was not being renewed. An iconic Singapore nightspot is now no more.....

Chijmes has a good atmosphere and Insomnia is not teeming with Westerners but there is a refreshing mix of party goers. The atmosphere is friendly and the bar is never heaving and not overly expensive (for Singapore). I would definately go back to see the two bands we saw. The musicians were very good and the intimate atmosphere was perfect for our group of 12.

The live music pulled us in, but after three rounds of negotiations on what they might or might not have we were ready leave. We had to send runny eggs back for more cooking and waited 40 minutes for the second meal. The musician was great. The food was okay. The service was bad. I will say the location (Chijmes) is gorgeous.

Do not go to this nightspot in Singapore. Firstly the staff are rude. Also I paid 10 Singapore Dollars for a diet coke, approx £5!!! I was served the end of two flat can's of diet coke. Also I mistakenly put the drink down for about a minute, and when I went to take another sip it had a very sour taste as if someone had put something in it. I left immediately.

When in SG this is a regular hangout late evening. Decent Pinoy bands playing covers - the second band in January was a lot better than the first one - but the first band was still fun.

As described earlier "Very busy place with melting-pot clientele" and like any of these types of venue in HK, SG, Macau or Bangkok the clientele changes by the day - thereby influencing the ambience massively. Yes, as again described earlier, there are a few hookers but not on the scale of the other 3 cities I mention and anyway that is a vital part of the melting pot.

But sorry to have to give a major negative. Not only are there are no toilets on the premises but the toilets in the extensive Chijmes complex close in the early hours - and this place closes after 4am. Totally ridiculous and unacceptable for a place that charges upwards of US$10 for a small drink. Singapore government why? .....

Insomnia. It's all in the name. It goes on and on... the bad ends at 3 a.m. The drinks are a bit pricy but that's what you get for the location. It's a hangout for air crew on layovers. The bar itself is small and the stage is comparatively big. The Filipino bands are generic. The members are contract workers put together by a Hong Kong based talent agency and sent to venues as a band. They may or may not have met before they came to play in Singapore but they seem to all put it together once they are on stage the first time. The usual recent hits are played and played loudly. Some bands have a better repertoire than others. It's hit and miss. If you leave late you will most likely have to run the gauntlet of hookers with hydraulically or pneumatically-enhanced upper sections and sweet come-ons to lure you into business. Caveat emptor: Some hookers carry "extra" equipment under those tight, short skirts, as is common in Asia. Dance your face off. Have a laugh. Make new friends, if only for an hour. No one knows who you are and no one cares. It's generally safe and the bouncers insure customers are well behaved. If you do get out of control, you are politely shown the door, which in this bar, is only a few steps away in any direction. They have food as well, but hey, it's Chijmes. See the band at Insomnia later. Eat somewhere else earlier.

I liked the live music. Did not like the public, as there are some prostitutes which makes it an uncomfortable place.

Very nice place for live music. Having dined in many restaurants around the club., it's a good place for dance and listen live music.
Very busy place with melting-pot clientele.

A three course meal for $35 was not only a bargain, it also delivered on quality. For the most part. A lovely salad for starters and a great steak for mains set high expectations, but the dessert, despite a velvety brownie, came with ice cream that had crystalised, so it was a disappointing ending. Overall, great value, and very good service.
