This is Singapore’s first independent contemporary arts centre, where the facilities include a theatre, a gallery, a dance studio, and classrooms. Young budding artists also use this place for their activities. We dropped by the Substation at 9:30 am on a Sunday morning but not much was happening there then. The external side wall, however, had several interesting designs and paintings.

I visited the Substation Gallery recently to view Yeo Tze Yang's solo exhibition titled “Evening, Once More". The artist is very talented for his almost photographic-like oil paintings that depict scenes of ordinary life in urban settings. The paintings captured brilliantly the twilight hours from 6.30-7.30 pm. This exhibition is opened from 1-8 pm until July 12 2021.
I also attended a free one hour tour by Raymond around The Substation during the weekend. He was enthusiastic in explaining about the arts and the buildings near to the Substation. I became more aware of the murals around the Substation. They are:
1) Sing Along If You Know The Words by SpeakCryptic (2019) on the upper wall at the alley between Substation and Peranakan Museum
2) 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙗𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙗 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 on the lower wall by Suan Toh Bee (2020) which is very popular with children
3) All Good in the Hood by Hellopigu (2019)
4) Solidarity Project by Singaporean crew RSCLS with an Indonesian crew (2013)
There is another Solidarity Project by RSCLS between Singaporean and Thai artists from Bangkok (2015) in the alley connecting Waterloo and Queen Streets next to Hotel Oxford.
5) Rasa Sayang by Lab Six Five on wall facing Stamford Road (2019). This is a very pretty mural capturing the Peranakan culture and plants as this area is also a park in the city.
He also shared interesting snippets such as the former S11 food centre between the former National Library and the Substation which was a popular and convenient food haunt and that S11 stands for the $ sign.
The Substation was a former power substation built in 1926 in the modern style with its steel framed glass windows and the iconic flag poles. It was founded in September 1990 by Cultural Medallion winner and playwright-dramatist, Kuo Pao Kun but it will moved out of this premise soon after 31 years here.

Formerly a power distribution centre, this building has been transformed into a arts centre occupied by The Substation, which is an independent, non-profit institution that relies on multiple funding sources (donations, government funding, etc) for its operations. It also rents out space for art exhibitions and its dance studio for dance classes, etc.

Do support the arts if you can.

This is located next to the Peranakan Museum. It's near City Hall MRT station.

It's a old shophouse that has been refurbished and now houses a theatre and exhibition space.

Most people will come here to catch plays and exhibitions.

There isn't much to see from the outside, but you can take a quick look on your way to the Peranakan museum. I've been to see a few fairly alternative theatre productions here in the past, and from what I recall the interior of the building is also nothing particularly special.

It is an old power distribution station, converted into an art centre. Unless you are attending an event or programs here, there is nothing to see. This is not a tourist attraction. Have a pass-by and taking a pic or two when you visit the next-door Peranakan Museum.
