This Singapore's 1930s icon will soon be gone - to make way for an underground train station.
Lots of bric-a-brac cluttered along narrow paths so you need loads of time and patience to browse and sift through slowly to find anything of quality. This is the fun and excitement of shopping at this Thieves Market :)
Happy Hunting!!

This is an interesting place to visit.
It's located near Bugis and Little India.
The market used to cover a big area, but now is about 1/3 its former size.
Stall holders place mats on the ground and hawk their wares. They sell a variety of knock-knacks, most of them second hand items. You can browse stores with variety of merchandise in this open air market. Not for rainy days.
Where this place gets its name is in the early days, people who come to this place and tell the stall owners what they wanted or need. Within an horror so, the stall owner would return with the item that the person wanted. Another story is that someone had something lost or stolen from him, he came to this place after that and found his stuff for sale!
If you are lucky, you can pick up interesting finds here!

This used to be where stolen goods were brought to be sold, now just a flea market and soon to be developed. Now only an historical point, unless you want to buy second hand stuff

I'm surprised at the negative reviews here. I'm not sure what people are expecting. This is a simple flea market that is worlds apart from the Orchard Road. It's a taste of the old Singapore, not a flashy tourist attraction. Soon no longer to exist as a new MRT station is being built there. The market starts up around 1pm. It's not a full day trip, you can go for half an hour or so. While you are in the area, check out the "damn shiok" Sungei Road Laksa on Kelantan Lane, and Ye Zhi Mei Handmade Dim Sum on Jalan Basar, not to mention all the other fantastic eateries in the area.

Visited on 8th July 2018 and it has been cleared and fenced off with security barriers to prepare for a new development.

A bunch of crap from the 80s. Old power tools, crappy shoes, electronics that probably don't work. Waste of time.

Fantastic place to buy or just linger and soak up the retro vibe of by gone objects,, masses of black and white , sepia photographs ,, of yesteryear Singapore,,
Did try to haggle for two items , but prices were a little high, and no negotiation,, perhaps I was not a local !
Liked the quirky of the two lanes,,,,,
Hope some one will post the new location if it moves please .

I have been visiting this place quite frequently during the last few years and more so in the last few months since announcement of its closure. At times, I leave without buying anything. But on a good day I can end up with quite a few items. Mostly used items are sold here, but one man's junk is another man's treasure. You may end up finding something you like here. It is uniquely Singapore street hawking. Do give it a visit before it's all gone.

Sungei Road Thieves Market is located between 2 roads namely Pitt Road and Larut Road. These 2 roads closed to traffic 1pm - 7pm daily. For market and pedestrians only. Good for a sunny day.
Visited the market at 6.30pm on Sunday evening. Some stalls were packing up but many still running their business till 7pm. This market selling pre-owned items. Its a place to test one's bargaining skills. Many foreigners especially mainland chinese, indians, malays shopping around. Also Caucasian tourists. Local rarely visit this place. See some old fashion trade such as traditional watch repairing etc.
This attraction will cease operation from 11 July 2017 thereafter goes into history. A place rooted with heritage of the pioneer generation.

I used to go every week when I lived in Singapore, but it is forty years ago. I loved it then! They had pythons in cages eating live hens and all manner of things going on! It was fascinating!

Time changed. Local authority emphasize on hygiene issues. No more live animals. Pre-owned goods only.
