I signed up for the Peranakan High Tea class for a day out with my mum and we were looking forward to a day of bonding and fun.
Less than 2 days before our class, they sent me an email telling me the class is cancelled due to low-sign ups.
Low sign-ups did not happen overnight. Palate Sensations would have known way ahead and could have offered me alternatives in advance. But of course, they don't care.

On the flipside, these are their terms for us:
Palate Sensations will not offer refunds, transfers, change of dates or postponements should you be unable to attend or if you arrive more than 10 minutes later than the commencement of the class for any booked or confirmed event. There are no reminders given for classes.

Reading the reviews here, Palate Sensations cancelling at short notice is not uncommon.
Sign up for their classes at our own risk. They impose much more stringent terms on us but keep things nice and easy on themselves.

Hi, it's unfortunate that your experience with us has been less than enjoyable. Please know that we try to keep classes open as late as we can to ensure that we have enough sign ups. We try never to cancel a class if we can help it but some guest chefs require a minimum of 4 participants to teach the class and this was unfortunately the case with this particular class. Nevertheless, we hope to welcome you back to our studio for another class. Please contact us directly and we will be happy to host you and a friend for free.

Great instruction, great recipes, amazing passion for food and culture- not visiting Palate Sensations is a mistake!

We came to Singapore on vacation because of the food, and signed up for class at Palate Sensations to learn a couple of our favorite recipes right from the source. Having worked in food for the last 25+ years I can attest to the quality of both the recipes and the instructions. They know what they are doing and teach in a way that make even the most unsure in a kitchen feel comfortable.

A don’t miss - we will be back every time we come visit Singapore. Thanks to Lynnette and team for an amazing afternoon and for contributing to our Singapore memories!

I don't usually write reviews, but my experience at Palate Sensations was such a disappointment that i feel i should voice my opinion. We organized a night out for my sister's hens. She is an avid cook and hence we chose Palate Sensations for the event, after reading the blurb on their website. We were all very excited about the evening, having chosen an unfamiliar menu for most of us, hoping to learn new recipes and kitchen tricks.

Unfortunately, there were some incidents which marred our entire experience of the evening.

1. When we got there, they were not ready, and we spent a good 20mins waiting for the chef to prepare our steak (hang on, i thought we were making that ourselves?!)

2. Being a cooking school, and just as a general courtesy to your clients, the chef did not even apologize for being late, nor did he introduce himself or the menu to us properly. We were plunged straight into the cooking without any proper introduction to the dishes/ explanation of the dish origin/ any special techniques to learn. A very basic courtesy that was missed out in running ANY teaching business. Name of the chef? I don't even know. Definitely failed on client interaction there.

3. We had paid for 7 people to participate but only had portions for 6 people. 4 of us paired up, and the remaining 3 had to share 1 cook station. Granted, we had more than enough food at the end of the night, but again, business is business. We did not pay SGD 90+ each to be given just an extra egg for the last work station.

4. As mentioned earlier, apart from having our main course cooked for us without any explanation on steak technique/ how to choose a cut of meat etc, we also missed out on learning the dessert as the manager told us that they had pre-prepared them for us already, because " we always do this for all our events". This was not made known to us in our confirmation email. This is a cooking school for goodness sake. Having the mains and desserts done for you without any explanation afterwards, what is the point?!

What annoyed me was the tone of voice that the manager had when we brought this up during the evening. She apologized dismissively and said that the dessert was actually very easy to make and that they had made it for us earlier, because the chocolate needed time to chill. Why then, could we not have made it right at the beginning, and the dessert could have been chilled during the rest of the class? Again, Palate Sensations, one more thing to teach your staff? Some basic common courtesy ie: do not talk down to your clients and you might want to review your lesson strategy.

Granted, they did try to redeem themselves by getting the chef out again during dinner to explain the cooking process for the steak and dessert- however by then, the experience had left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth, even though the food tasted good.

All in all, a very expensive and disappointing experience. Our experience definitely did not live up to the hype that their website seeks to project.

"Our cooking parties are innovative and engaging, with active role-playing, thus leaving you with an enriching experience." -- Definitely not for us. Would i recommend groups go there for their parties? Not in a million years. Take your money and spend it on a good dinner somewhere else with better service.

I had to cancel my class at the last minute due to illness - there was no refund, change of date offered. The lady on the phone was so rude to my husband. They took our money and ran. So disappointing - I would NEVER recommend Palate Sensations to anyone.

I am very disheartened to read this review and to hear that you are disappointed in our service. Please write to me at info@palatesensations.com so that I can get to the heart of the issue and understand what the problem is. If I can offer you a refund or a replacement class, I will but I need to understand what the issue is first. When a customer signs up and pays for a class, we do not offer a refund no matter what the reason is. This is clearly stated in the Terms & Conditions that each customer has to agree to before they can even pay for their classes. We ask them to choose carefully because of this term. This is the same as buying many services out there such as a movie ticket or a flight which usually incurs a penalty if there is any change in plans. If you miss your flight for whatever reason, it is almost always forfeited and you have to purchase a new ticket. Given enough notice, we often break this rule for our participants anyway and reschedule them for another class but it's on a case by case basis. There is however, no cause for and no tolerance for rudeness which is what I would like to find out more about. Lynette Managing Director, Palate Sensations

I took my team to Palate Sensations for a team building cook-out. Instead what we got was an overly aggressive Spanish chef who was doing her best to get us out of the kitchen as quickly as possible, and a very disinterested business manager. Zero team building elements, limited wine options (despite what they say on their site). Definitely won't be going back, and certainly wouldn't recommend them for a corporate team building evening.

Thank you for your review. We take feedback very seriously at Palate Sensations. We strive for excellence here with all our classes and with all our teaching staff. Unfortunately, I will have to agree with you about Chef Ruth. She does sometimes come across as overly aggressive even though in reality, she is not a Gordon Ramsey but more of a Nigella Lawson. Her Galician (Spanish) accent comes out quite harsh. She has held countless corporate team building events at Palate Sensations and your feedback is not the first to highlight this. I do apologise for this. We have taken steps to ensure that she doesnt come across like this in the future. We also apologise if she seemed to rush you all through the class as that is also not the intention. We have also taken steps to ensure this does not happen in the future. I have spoken to our Business Manager about her attitude. Again, it seems like I am apologising all the time but her attitude is certainly not like this. I am sorry to hear that your experience is disappointing at Palate Sensations. We have taken a hard look at ourselves and have made sure moving forward that we communicate with our clients in a more mindful way to ensure they all leave with a positive impression and a positive experience. Thank you for highlighting this. We hope that you and your team will return to Palate Sensations for another event so that we can have a chance to show you a positive experience. Wow! Read some reviews and thought they were totally unjustified. I don’t normally write reviews so here’s what I think. I went to Palate Sensations for a few classes because they use professionally trained chefs and are always highly organised. All the classes were really fun because everything was hands on so I thought I would organise my sister’s hen’s party there too.

There were 8 of us and they were accommodating enough to change some of the menus for us because some of us were pregnant and couldn’t eat various things on the menu. We had their Head Instructor Chef Diego who hails from Italy so “Under The Tuscan Sun" was what we eventually chose.

The Good - The class was indeed fun and casual. We were divided into teams and made the pasta from scratch. The almond biscotti was so yummy we started eating it when it was first baked and still nice and soft (apparently we had to bake it twice so that it hardens). Chef Diego cooked the steak for us because all of us except one of the girls were afraid of oil splashing onto our clothes. He explained the different doneness to us but all we were thinking of was when we could start eating! Chef Diego’s only been in Singapore for a few months so we had some instances where he had trouble understanding our Singlish and we had trouble understanding his Italian/English!

The Bad - there was too much food! We thought we would only be making tasting portions so we booked a dinner afterwards but fortunately the restaurant allowed us to cancel our reservation.

The Ugly - I had to make extra trips to the gym and practically starve myself the week following the class to fit into the bridesmaid’s dress!

Overall, a fun and enjoyable event made possible by an accommodating chef and staff @ Palate Sensations. Highly recommended!

Signed up for this 1-day class with a friend. The class was supposed to start at 10am and end at 6pm. It started a little late as my friend and I were late as we could not find the carpark. The trainer started by telling us that she would end the class earlier than 6pm as she was going to meet a friend for dinner. Fine, we understood and didn't have issues with that. The trainer then said she would end class by 4.30pm and asked if we were ok with that. We were fine with it as she said we had more than enough time to complete everything.

This turned out to be totally untrue. We were rushed throughout the class. The trainer was impatient and would be sarcastic if we asked any questions that she deemed unnecessary. There were times when we were doing food preparations or cooking and she would be elsewhere chatting with another trainer instead of checking to see if we were doing fine or needed help. She kept rushing us throughout every item that we were making, especially for the last 2-3 food items. As there were 5 of us in the class, we were spilt into 2 groups and my friend and I were in 1 group while the other group consisted of the remaining 3 ladies. As the other group had 1 more person, they naturally finished things faster than us. The trainer didn't wait for my group to finish cooking our last item and kept calling us to take a group photo when we were trying our best to complete our cooking. And it was only 4.20pm at that time. By the time we packed the food, cleaned up the place, filled up the feedback forms and left the kitchen, it was only 4.50pm.

Seriously, this is totally unprofessional. The course cost $250 per person and was supposed to run for 8 hours. If it ended early because there was more than enough time to cook and prepare everything, I would have had no problems with that. But in this case, the trainer rushed us through preparing and cooking the items and was totally impatient throughout just so that she could end early for her own benefit! And she achieved what she wanted, by ending at 4.30pm, at the expense of those who paid and were rushed through the class.

Granted, the trainer was knowledgeable and the food made was delicious. The portions were also generous. However, can I remember much of what I had learned in the class? Not at all, it all whirled by in a flash as we were rushed, especially for the last 2-3 food items. So would I go back to Palate Sensations again for a class? Highly unlikely, after such a negative experience.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience. I will speak to the Chef to ensure this matter is addressed. Thank you for bringing it up. I am glad despite the rush you enjoyed the recipes. I will reach out to you privately on your email as well. I hope that despite your experience, you will give us another chance and return to another class. We have many classes on offer from many cuisines and many chefs that teach at Palate Sensations. It is not our policy to rush our participants. It is always our intention that all participants not only get a hands on experience, they learn at their own pace.

We planned a Hen's night for a close friend at this cooking school. Chose this particular school as the menu that was presented in the proposal looked really good.

Our class was scheduled for the 6-9pm slot. My friends got there on time while I was personally late for 5 mins. However as I was the one who had been coordinating the booking, the owner was waiting for me to make the rest of the payment showed my friends a black face.

When I arrived with the "bride to be", the instructor in charge was not prepared for the class. We had to wait for another 5-10 minutes before we were attended to, therefore the blackface was uncalled for.

We were then rushed to the cooking stations where only 6 sets of cooking cutlery was prepared when I made payment for 7. Instead of preparing another set of ingredients we were told to share what was on the table. Having paid for 7 I'll expect 7 sets not 6.

The chef in charge was also very rush rush through the cooking without giving proper clear instructions. We were lost at what to do most of the time. After cooking we realised that we were severely short changed. We didn't get to cook the main (roast beef) or truffle desserts. When asked about it they simply gave a I'm sorry if you were not informed BUT its so easy to do attitude. My friends and I got quite cheesed off.

To them everything is like "that's easy just this and that and its done." If it was really simple then why would we bother heading there to learn? Even if it was easy, they should have gone through the steps of marinating the meat instead of making us wait while they quickly did it and shove it in the oven.

HI Kimberly I am sorry to hear that you guys had a disappointing session. I have spoken to the chefs about your event. As per our phone conversation this morning, I am glad we sorted everything out. Unfortunately the truffles and the roast beef take too much time to make and had to be started before you arrive. Based on your feedback, we have revised the menu to ensure that all participants will make every item on the menu in the future. As for the rest of the matters you mentioned, I am glad it's been cleared up. We hope to welcome you all back again in the future. Lynette Foo Managing Director Palate Sensations Cooking School
