Suprisingly clean.. children will love it.. food and beverages and riding ticket are not expensive.. its a must visit attraction in Yogyakarta.. Very hot weather, but the park has lots of big trees to cover from direct sunlight.. Animal Petting Area should make the children happy..

With 10.000 IDR for entrance fee (that's less than a dollar, people) you wouldn't ask for more. You will get arm band or your kids, so they will know who to contact when your kids were lost and a map. This zoo is stroller friendly and clean. They have interactive bird cage where you can feel the birds fly towards you and surprisingly you will find no bird poo on the path way hahahah. They also have animal show for free. Though some might say they don't have much animal collection, they have interesting collection of reptiles, birds and penguins.
Beside the animals they also have ATV which you can rent for 20.000 IDR and speed boat.

Was recommended here but what a mistake. Definitely a local zoo experience and sooo sad. Monkey in a small cage with a chain around his neck. An otter in a shed in dirty water, all alone. It smells horrible everywhere. Definitely not caring for the animals.

Bad sevice from the vehicle, the driver kick us out despite the ticket say we can choose whenever destination we want for one time ride. The cages are dirty like there is no one look after them, but the employer just laying around everywhere. But the most piss me off is the vehicle they provide is very bad services.

First thing I see, is elephants swaying and rocking their heads and one that was pacing, while the other was chained to the ground. Its ABNORMAL for them to be pacing and swaying their heads. Earlier in the day some of the staff ride them and not only that one guy was hitting one the elephants over the head with a pole. I've seen crocodiles that looked dead, or lifeless. And one of the worst things was seeing 17+ terrapins all in one small TINY pond being fed a couple of carrot chunks, and could barely move! Some of the animals aren't paired with others of it's kind and were on their own. They try to cover it up by saying their helping and trying to protect their animals, but aren't! Plain LIES!!! DO NOT COME HERE

I went here thinking it would be interesting, but it was just awful. The elephants and bears are rocking backwards and forwards, clearly in distress. The "enclosures" are concrete prison cells barely big enough for the animals with no greenery or distractions for them (anyone who's ever watched Monkey Business will want to cry when they see the monkeys). Even the fish tanks were too small.

I hear there is a nice zoo near Surabaya, so go there instead. This one? My heartfelt advice is to avoid if you care anything for animals as it's not a nice day out.

We visited the zoo by chance but we We're so glad we did. The current entry fee is 25000Rp outer person. So cheap!

Pros: large zoo with a wide range of animals. Easy to get around with lots of signs. Wide variety of interactive advices at very reasonable prices 10/20k Rp. Animals look well fed and look after. The gift shop is very well priced.

Cons: the elephants were chained up which I found very wrong.

We also visited Bali zoo on our trip and paid 10x extra of what we paid here. We wish we had come across GLZ first. Definitely worth a visit, especially with younger children.
Be aware, this zoo is a local attraction with very few western tourists visiting. We were hounded all day for photos and pictures with local people.

Those that spent a lot of time traveling in Indonesia know that zoos and wilderness reserves are generally in a sorry state.

Yogyakarta zoo -since corporatisation- has shown how a zoo can be entertaining and educational at the same time. The grounds were very clean and uncluttered. Information boards were written in Indonesian and English for every exhibited animal. The many concession stands were unobtrusive.

This is a delightful place to spend with family and friends.

For the politically incorrect, you can ride an elephant and hold a snake around your shoulder. Both are major no-nos in Australia where this is considered an affront to the dignity of the animal...

Entrance is Rp 15'000 for over 2 years of age. Rp 5000 for car parking. Rp 12'000 approx from the Jl Malioboro. Riding the elephant costs Rp 10'000 per person, holding the snake: leave a tip.
