We went there not knowing what to expect. But we were flabbergasted with the experience we had. Floating on a tube and passing through the dark cave which had thousands of rats on the roof and stalagmites that had formed over thousands of years. We came across a small opening of the cave roof that let the sunlight in. Heavenly look indeed!!
Don't miss this place if you are visiting Yogyakarta.

From a normal if you miss this site nothing great, but when in jogyakarta and looking for fun time, this should be a place. Little over 90 min from city. Do carry proper change and slippers/ sandals that can get wet. Also carry a water proof case for camera. Rest valuables we suggest not to carry or lock in the car. It is a 350m slow river tubing through a cave full of formations and bats. Then in the second phase there tubing over a little fast river for some excitement. Overall fun filled 2 hrs. It is safe. And do remember to take a bath at the place itself as the river wate does not look clean.

Gua Pindul is a limestone cave with a river flowing through it; about 50 km eastwards of Yogyakarta city, about 1.5 hrs drive,in Gunung Kidul district which has hilly limestone geography. We went with rented car passing through small towns, then Wonosari town, and peacefull villages dotted with plots of padi plant, maize, chili, teak trees. The tourist centre have clean basic facilities; changing rooms and toilet, 2 foodstalls. Paid 30,000 Rp each at the counter and were provided a guide for 4-5 persons,life-jackets, rubber tubes with bottom supporting straps, rubber shoes. Its advisable to wear shorts, bring a torch and preferably waterproof cameras. My guide was definitely experienced, knowledgeable, very helpful guy pulling our tubes along when the river was slow moving. My first time going through a limestone cave in a tube and it was fun and enlightening. Cave length about 250 metres,a bit dark and claustrophobic at first, then just sit back and listened to the guide talking, observing the rock formations etc and taking lots of photo with my cheap camera. Halfway we were allowed to climb onto a slippery shelf just for the fun and also said a short prayer wish at an auspicious location in the cave.Saw the light at the end of the tunnel; got off the tubes, up the cement steps and onto a waiting pick-up van and a choice either to go back or another tubing adventure on the nearby Oyo river. Next visit was to Indrayanti beach about 45 mins drive south. Overall, a fun outdoor outing for us.

I've seen a lot of pictures of Pindul Cave on Instagram quite a while, and finally I had my chance to visit on mid May this year (2015) with my family.
We went to Pindul Cave by our rented car. Thank God we rented car with the driver as our guide. I can imagine if we went there by ourself, we wouldn't be able to find the location easily as there were no signage nor clue as the guidance to get to Pindul Cave. My suggestion: use Google Map. There were several signage: Pindul Cave with the arrow pointing, but my driver said it leads you to local guide who will takes you to Pindul Cave with extra amount of money of course.
After 1,5 hour drive from the city (Jogja), finally we arrived at Pindul Cave. The staff guided us to the ticket box and explain each one of the options before we bought the tickets. There were 3 options of attraction if I'm not mistaken, all tubing but with different tracks: inside the cave, along the river, and I forgot the last one. The fare range from Rp 40.000,- to Rp 50.000,-/person/option. You are free to choose one option only, two, or all three of them. We chose tubing inside the cave.
After bought the ticket, we were asked to keep our bags at the deposit counter and waited our name to be called to wear a life jacket. Then the guide took us to the cave. It was an awesome experience for us! My kids (11yo-9yo-7yo) were so happy drifting inside the cave seeing the stalagtite and stalagmite, the sleeping bats, diving from high rocks, and swimming to the finish line. We would definetely go back if we had another chance to visit Jogja and will try different track at Pindul.

We were the only four western tourists among 500 to 1000 Indonesian tourists on a very crowded Sunday just before Christmas. At first I was worried. There were so many people and it did not look like the pictures! The queue went down stairs on both sides of the river and the river itself was completely full of people floating in rubber tubes. They were holding onto tubes either side and so were like a long, snaky rope all coiled up, but which eventually ended up in the tunnel.
Our guide (as westerners we got our own guide, a lovely young man who spoke good English and was fun with our kids) explained there are five companies putting groups in the water but it is very organised. Each has a different coloured life jacket and they have a set order to enter the river. Once we were in the water, it was really fun. For us it was a weird, funny cultural experience and so we enjoyed it a lot. Everyone seemed in a great mood and happy to wait their turn and the atmosphere was really lovely and fun and very family orientated.
And then inside the cave was even better than expected. Despite the weirdness of having hundreds of people floating through it, it was actually beautiful, huge and very clean.
This is a very different kind of cultural experience for westerners who might be in Yogya for the batik and temples. We highly recommend it, especially if you have kids.
And don't be afraid. Despite an initial concern that it look like chaos, it was very well organised. As long as there is no earthquake or flash flood (!) it seemed very safe and clean.
There were also organised place to leave shoes and bags and changing facilities.
Do it!

If you are expecting fast rapid river stream on kayak, think again, this is more of a slower version suitable for family with kids. They took you to multiple caves using inflatable rafts made from used car tires. It's fun for families and group tour

We went there during Christmas holiday and it was jam packed with people so we were stuck in the cave can not move out. Not a great experience especially with the heat and people feet stuck on your head.
It is cheap though for around Rp 35,000 you get to drift around in rubber tube along the river but you need to carry the rubber tube yourself and also you must walk barefoot to the river so can be very slippery so not suitable for elderly....
The location is about 1 hour away from Yogya by car.

Pindul Cave (Gua Pindul) is about 90 minutes one-way from Jogjakarta, so it's quite a long ride. To make it worthwhile, I highly recommend that you enjoy at least 2 activities here.
There are 9 different companies operating here offering tubing activities for Gua Pindul, open river tubing, trekking inside the cave etc. If you want to avoid the crowds, come during weekdays. If you come by your own transport, just key 'Gua Pindul' into Waze mobile app and it will get you here. Just as you enter the area, there's an 'entrance fee' (retribusi) of IDR 10,000. They will tell you that one of them will lead you directly to Gua Pindul for free. I'd followed a young chap on his motorbike... I suspect he belongs to one of the tubing companies as I was led to a parking spot and after that directly to the ticketing booth. In any case, it was great since it's the nearest to Gua Pindul.
The fees are IDR 35,000 for Gua Pindul tubing and IDR 45,000 for open river tubing.
There's a 'locker' service whereby you can keep your stuff while you go for tubing. I suggest you bring a dry bag to keep your cash, valuables, camera etc with you when you go tubing. You will get wet during the tubing as your bum will be submerged into the water. Furthermore, you may want to swim in the cave or go under the waterfalls along the river.
The cave tubing has a 'guided tour' until the part with the collapsed roof where the beautiful sun rays come shining in. Best time between 10 am - 1pm. It takes about 30 minutes to complete.
After that, we were trucked to the beginning of the river for the open river tubing. The river is about 2-3 kilometers long. Halfway, there are several waterfalls where we stopped for a long break. The rock formation along the river is exposed during the dry season; they really looked surreal. We took about 2 hours and were trucked back to the ticketing booth after finished.
The life vest states 'Tunas Wisata' on the back, so I presume that must be the company I went with. The local guides are extremely friendly and helpful.
All-in-all, it was a great fun and experience. Highly recommended!

while we exploring pindul cave it took around 30 minutes with 340 m length of the cave and variation deep of river from 2 - 8 m, but it was tottaly fun , it felt we explore the ancient age of pindul cave , look like back to the past, inside the cave it felt a sensational mood created within.
this is really suitable for people who like water adventure.
a must try in gunung kidul that well known as the exotic karst and ancient age travel destination

Hello, I understand that there are multiple operators for the cave tubing. Can anyone recommend one? I'm planning to be in Jogja during 8-12 December, will it be peak season by then? I avoid being there when it's overcrowded.

Hello: I am American but visit Yogyakarta often to see family. I would like to visit this cave. Do all of the visitors book the visit with a tour guide? Or do you visit the cave on your own?
Who do you pay admission too?
If it is best to use a tour guide, who are the best tour guides please?
Written November 24, 2017
Hello Floridabluemacau. Just hire a private driver and ask him to bring you there or you can go on your own. For the admission, there's a registration counter where you pay for admission and tour fee which include with equipment rental (safety helmet, life jacket) for tubing activity,a local guide, and return off-road truck trip. There also photographer hire service if you want with extra charge that will take your photos along the trip. Hope this will help.

Hi everyone,
Based on reviews here, I understand there is cave tubing and river tubing at Pindul. Can recent visitors tell me the price of the entrance fees, cave tubing and river tubing activities? Thanks!
Written September 8, 2016
Ticket price is very reasonable.... about rp35,000 to rp45,000. Oh. Bring your own snacks and food. There are few food stalls around and being a remote place, err..... let's just say we only took cup noodles and canned drinks.

Hey there,
My friends and I are planning to travel to Yogyakarta and we are seeking some adrenaline activities to do.
We are currently looking into Activity Tour agencies and could use some recommendations :)
It would be great if you could include other recommendations such as places of attraction :)

Jomblang and pindul caves are good! But don't go on a weekend, it gets quite crowded. It's about an hour away from the city but so worth it.

Is it safe for a 65 year old to get on the tube inside the cave?
Written June 9, 2016
Yes, it is generally safe if the 65 year old is mobile and able to move around pretty much on his/her own. The operator will have guides to take you in and give you a brief highlight of the cave. It is pitch dark for a while but the guides have torchlights/flashlights.

Is it safe for a 65 year old to get on the tube inside the cave?
Written June 9, 2016
The activity is basically relaxing since you just need to sit on a float and follow the river flow. The river was flowing very slow during my visit (early April).
The tour organizer provided floating jacket and they accompanied us during the tubing.
You will be wet as you enter the river.
I personally consider it as a safe activity as long as you are in healthy condition and don't have any problem with the dark or claustrophobia.
For a 65 year old, it will depend on his/her own health but I would suggest you to contact the tour organizer directly.
Avoid weekend, holiday or high season so your trip can be more enjoyable.
