Went here before pandemic. Last time I can stayed until around 6pm. While now 5.30pm the officers already ‘chasing’ people out and close the main gate.
I bought the ticket from Borobudur (combo ticket Borobudur + Ratu Boko) and valid for 2 days. Price for foreginers are very expensive compare to locals. For Ratu Boko cost around USD 25. While local only USD $3-5. But what can we do. You want to come & visit, just suck it up.
Still think Ratu Boko is very peaceful place to see & beautiful. best time to visit during sunset. Weather chill & windy. So peaceful place to enjoy. My toddler son enjoy it too; he can run here & there.
Try to explore more inside this temple. I came during closing (5pm) so couldn’t see much things. Wish to come here again in the future.

Ratu Boko is a nice, ruined temple not far from Prambanan temple complex, up on a hill. It has an impressive entrance gate.
I only had less than two hours so had to hurry round the temple area. The weather was good and there were not so many people so I wandered around almost alone, as my companions preferred to wait in the shade. So I went all around, even up the hill to the "Padang" from which there is a lovely view across to Prambanan.
With the brochure I was able to read up a bit afterwards too, since I was in a hurry to catch a late afternoon flight.
For foreigners living in the country, don't forget to bring your kitas to avail of the normal entry price, currently Rp 40,000 per person.

Once you found the place it is quite nice. When we wen there the google maps pin was wrongly guiding us yo a closed restaurant. Bu there are signs on the road so follow those. Nice view over the Prambanan Temple for the restaurant and a very spacious area with temple ruins all over. Good walk and nice views.

I visited Yogyakarta with my Uncle for the first time and on the day we visited the Prambanan Temples, our driver asked us if we wanted to visit Ratu Boko. We decided to come here because I had heard about Ratu Boko and watched travel Vlog videos on this place which were shot before the Covid-19 pandemic. In the past, hordes of tourists and local visitors came here to have their photos taken at sunset with the glorious 'sunset gate'. Nowadays, this place closes at 5.30pm while the sunset happens between 5.45 to 6pm. In fact, at 5.15pm, the security guards will start chasing all visitors out of the place! What a SHAME!!!
Overseas visitors have to pay USD25 per person to enter this place. Local visitors pay only a fraction of the price. Honestly, besides the 'sunset gate', there is nothing much to see here! This was supposedly a palace but only their foundation stones of all the buildings remain on this site. If you climb up to the highest point on the hill, you can see the city of Jogja and part of the Prambanan temples on a clear day. However, it is definitely NOT worth paying USD25 for this. This place is a real disappointment!!! Don't bother coming here!

My partner and I arrived at the (admittedly slightly late) time of 5pm knowing the site was only open until 6pm, and bought a ticket on that basis.
We were charged an outrageous 10 times the 'locals' rate - a far higher markup than other sites we had visited.
We then discovered several parts of the site had already closed for the evening, and we were escorted out for 'closing time' at 5.30, meaning we spent ~$25/pp for ten minutes!
We were offered a refund if we could return the next morning, which we couldn't and which would have cost money to do. Email requests for a refund were ignored for a month, and then refused.
All in all, a bunch of scam artists who fleece tourists. AVOID.

You can skip it. It's mostly visited by locals for picnics and "walk in the park". The tickets for locals are cheap but the tickets for tourists are too costly ($25 per person) and not worth what you get. The views of Jogja city and the Prambanan temple complex are nice but not enough for the hole in your pocket.

We bought the combined ticket with Prambanan Temple. In the morning there is a free shuttle between the temples.
Ratu Boko temple is very peaceful with beautifully maintained grounds. However, most the structures are just what's left of the foundations. This is fine, but as the entrance fee is the same as Prambanan, it seems way overpriced.
Most the signs have an English translation which is good.

U may not fan of old ruins or stones with so much of historical value here.... but... I can guarantee that you might amaze with its existing and story. Our local tour guide did gave his very best to talk about this ancient Temple. Great place for photos too.

You will find a pretty ‘temple’ behind a mountain. I’ve been here many years ago and surprised to see lots of improvement in this area. I love this place because of the landscape and stone combinations. I blew my imagination to draw the temple in the past. Take time to visit this place in the afternoon before sunset.

in the ancient Javanesse story, Ratu Boko is the kingdom of the giants that eat human as their food.
this temple located on the top of the hill, very hot and wide, should bring umbrella when visit in the afternoon.
there's restaurant inside the area , we can see nice n awesome sightseeing from here.
if you want to see the evidence of the giant kingdom, go to the "keputren" , which is used for royal princess in the past for take a bath,
you can find the "big giant size " of bath tube there :)
quite spooky there even in the afternoon.

IF you are a meditator, the vibe is amazing. Meditate towards the bathhouses on a warm floor stone and cool breeze near sunset is amazing...

Hi everyone. If I want to visit Ratu Boko for sunset, but don't want the coffee/tea/meals provided with the sunset ticket (IDR110,000), can I buy the regular ticket (USD13) and stay until sunset?
Written September 5, 2016
Hi Carolyn,
Yes you can buy the regular ticket to enjoy the sunset at Ratu Boko Temple.
If you happen to visit Prambanan at the same day as Ratu Boko, you can buy a combined ticket of Prambanan and Ratu Boko.
So go to Prambanan first (make sure you bring umbrella and put on your sunscreen) and afterwards going to Ratu Boko to enjoy the sunset there.
They provide a shuttle service to and fro as well.
Enjoy!
Hope this helps ;)

Hi. Is it possible for me to head to Ratu Boko Temple by bus from Borobudur Temple? Would appreciate it if you could advice on the route, fares and other transportation options. We're on a strict budget and is currently considering the cheapest option to get there. Thanks!
Written March 24, 2016
Hi,I am so sorry. I have no idea how to get there by public transport (bus). As I know, Borobudur Temple is far from Ratu Boko Temple. But Ratu Boko Temple is close to Prambanan Temple only 15 minutes by car. I suggest you go by bus to Prambanan Temple form Borobudur Temple, and continue your trip by motorbike taxi (gojek).
I think this is the cheapest way, I have no idea how much the fare is. But I guarantee it is not expensive, it will meet low budget traveler plan.
Yogyakarta people are nice, warm, friendly and helpful, the living cost is also low. I suggest you go there and continue your trip to Solo, next city where not so far from Yogyakarta. Only about 2 hours by car from Yogyakarta.
