I can only recommend this to visitor who are really interested in a history lesson. Other than that you might spend tops 10minutes running thru the whole area. I spent 2 hours, cause I read all diorama and information boards. That's why it took me that long.

Once again a museum that misses the mark, because of a lack of understanding about good exhibit curation and presentation. A former Dutch colonial fort, which has been restored and the buildings at least are in good order. However, do not visit expecting to see any information about the actual history of the fort itself, it's construction or how the Dutch military conducted operations here and the relationship of the fort to the colonial civil area that once surrounded it. Instead there are a series of dusty dioramas with only minimal translation into poor English of the early stages of the National independence movement. Nothing wrong with that, as subject matter, but could have been so much better presented, and there needs to be some exhibits about the fort itself and the impact of 200 years of Dutch colonisation on the archipelago and Java in particular. One of the large barracks has been converted into a huge and comfy, traditionally furnished cafe, the massive walls make it a cool environment for a rest break out of the sun. Served good coffee.

I visited this museum cos just wondering what inside and willing to learn again the history of Indonesia. In fact, the museum was authentic Dutch building I got something new. I visited many museums and this place has its uniqueness. I learned the independence day, the history of UGM and other. Well this museum is good and the entrance ticket is super cheap IDR 5.000,- per pax. You can take picture anywhere you want and its very instagramable.

For a very cheap price (like $1.50 USD) you can go through the museum which has really creative and well done dioramas of the history of Indonesia. There are English descriptions on all the different pieces which was really nice.
I think stopping at this museum is a must if you are going through Yogyakarta in order to better understand the history of Indonesia and all the hardships this country went through to get to where it is today.

For just RP15000 or just over US$1, you can get reprieve from the heat and bustle of Malioboro.
Make sure to follow the Dioramas in sequence, i.e. start with Diorama 1.
One drawback is that not all the displays have explanations in English.

Very well maintained fort (at least something good they learned from the Dutch) with a nice overview of Indonesian history and the role the Dutch played in that. Not to be proud of !
Indeed presentation a bit outdated but worthwhile visiting.

Inside this fort is a museum consisting of 3 or 4 rooms (kind of long rectangular-shaped ones) with displays of the country's Independence movement including many of these great "dioramas" (with miniature but "life-like" figures), some of which depicting guerilla battle scenes & such; and what's kind of unique about this museum is that it tells the history "in relation to" the city of Jogja (meaning many of the displays are those of the events that took place in the city). Then on the grounds of the Fort are some wax figures of soldiers (looking like "real") & statues of their two top generals of the past (about one of whom there are also some enlarged photos in the museum such as those of his arrival in the city). Also can be done (like on your way out) is to go up the front entrance gate and look out over the water which is like a moat between the fort & the area like a square that you'll have to get through from the street to get to the Fort.
If taking the transjogja bus (2A, 2B & 3A are the numbers that I know of), the bus stop is very conveniently right in front of the Fort which is on the south end of the "shopping street" Jl. Malioboro (a stretch of about 2 km that is just "ideal" for souvenir shopping or just for hanging out). And nearby, as time permits after this fort & the shopping street or on another day by taking the bus to the same bus stop, there's Kraton or the Sultan's Palace with "a number of small museums" inside where you can learn quite a bit about the sultans of the past (in a walkable distance to the south from the bus stop, but I would suggest taking a rickshaw or a horse-drawn buggy since the area around the palace is just like a "maze" of narrow streets); then about a 10-minute walk further south after leaving Kraton is Tamansari Water Castle with a big "bathing pool" (and a bit further from the exit side of the castle is an ancient mosque which is both underground & above ground).
