Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. I always admire the culture of the people live around the mountain for their local wisdom. I feel warm welcome everytime I visit this mountain.

Rented a jeep with a driver up the mountain. It's quite adventurous as we requested the driver to give us more thrill and he drives super crazy and we liked it! The view right on top is just so mesmerizing and stunning. The area is also quite cold and breezy. A MUST VISIT during a trip to Yogyakarta. Let the photos talk for itself =D

This place is a must-visit when you travel to Jogjakarta. We traveled by jeep to go up to the Museum, Aliens Rock, Bunker Kaliadem. We couldn’t see the Mount Merapi when we were there as the weather was not permitted, covered with fog.

Overall, it was an awesome experience to be there to see the ‘result of natural disasters’.

Loved this. I've been many times before, but i had never taken the jeep tour in the river. It was a lot of fun and i didn't want it to end. The last time i was here, it was cloudy so id didn't get to see the mountain very clearly, but the jeep trip in the river was fantastic. Bring dry clothes!

Nice first time experience for us to ride in an open jeep, standing and enjoying the pleasant mountain breeze and scenic beauty of the mountain and nature.

We got to see the huge human-faced rock that fell here at this spot after being thrown out of the volcano that was 7km away. You get an idea of the power of the Volcano.

Other than that, the mountain peak itself wasn't clearly visible to us on that day as it was cloudy.

Also, got to see the bunker that was constructed to protect the local villages from sudden volcanic ash.

Overall, a good experience for us.

This volcano is an active one, and has been erupting on/off over the last few decades. This was then converted into a wasteful, ersatz, sad and depressing 3 hour tour by the locals.

So, the cons first: (1) there is nothing to see, actually, beyond a view of the volcano from ...[drum rolls please...] 4 Km away (2), you go there in a bunch of 60 year old jeeps that are spewing pollution [inhaled more disgusting exhaust in 3 hours than in my entire life before] .. (3) feel sad that the mountain has been mined to exhaustion for sand/gravel, such that it looks like an depressing ecological disaster.. (4) see so much garbage littering the hillside [water bottles, plastic bags, plastic straws, surgical masks, and other assorted crap] that clearly shows that there is no respect for the environment.

So, all in all, there are a lot of negatives.

On the positive side, apparently if you come in summer, you may actually get to take a picture of yourself with the volcano in the background from 4 miles away, without any clouds.

Oh, and yes, on the way back, our jeep guide took us into the ruins of a quarry where there were some water puddles and splashed about, which was fun, except when you realize that that quarry was an ugly man made ecological disaster + scar on the face of the mountain.

This mountain has been sinned against enough. These tours should stop.
