We have used this Jakarta central station for the departure of our memorable train voyage to Yogyakarta. Gambir is as crowded as all train stations in major cities worldwide, but it is, unfortunately, much more confusing. Although there are plenty of officials and staff as in any Indonesian public institution, they were not able to give you accurate information. Unfortunately, we needed to use the washrooms, and they were not clean bur rather messy, something that one does not find even in the most remote rural places of Indonesia.

It is ludicrous that this, the main station for long distance departures from Jakarta, is not accessible by the local train system. Local trains pass through without stopping. This means getting off the local train at Gondangdia station and taking a taxi or a long hot walk to Gambir. I can see the reasoning: local and main line trains use different ticketing systems so passengers mingling would create problems. The problem is entirely one of KAI's making. There are two island platforms. Local trains whizz through on the two center lines while main line trains wait on the outer two lines. If one island platform, say lines 1 and 2 was dedicated to local trains and the other to main line trains it would be easy to segregate the passengers and avoid ticketing confusion.

Excellent long distance train travel in Java. Executive class is as good as luxury on the trains which offer it but take a blanket as it has excellent air conditioning and so it can get cool on a long journey. Take your own snacks but their is food and beverage available on the train.

I booked a train ticket to go to Bandung from jakarta, so I had to come to this train station to catch the Argo Parahyangan 24 train. I came a bit early to the station and took the boarding pass from the check-in counter. There are many printing kiosks so not much of a queue. After that I explored the station and amazed at the amount of fast food outlets inside.

I decided to try fried chicken meal at CFC and it tasted nice. Next I tried the Japanese dessert called Taiyaki from the Fujisan Taiyaki outlet. After that I bought doughnuts from Krispy Kreme outlet. There are multiple convenience stores located inside the station called "Alfa express". There is a hostess near the train to guide us to our coach and the train is on time.

This week, my partner and I took the train from Gambir station, Jakarta, to the city of Bandung, West Java, a trip of 3.5 hours. The trip on Executive (AC) class train was excellent, and hassle free. Gambir station is now very modern, with ample seating for passengers waiting to board their trains. There are escalators and a lift going up to the platforms, but no down escalator. However, if you don't mind taking the (three flights!) of stairs or lift down, there are many eager station porters keen to help you with your bags!
It is important to order train tickets in advance as this is a very popular route. You can book by phone or on line. However, some say that booking by phone is best as you can then request seating together if travelling with others. When booking, you must provide the ID number of each passenger travelling. That is, you cannot book for several passengers without providing an ID for each. More importantly, on the day of travel, you must show the ID used when booking each ticket. If no matching ID, you will not be permitted to travel.
Payment for tickets booked by phone must be paid for within one hour of booking, through a local ATM machine. You will be provided with a payment code (for the ATM), plus a booking code which later allows you to retrieve your tickets via a machine at the station. This can be done up to 7 days before travel or on the day of travel. You can also book your return trip tickets at the same time. The cost per ticket for Jakarta to Bandung on Executive class is Rp.120,000 (approx. A$12).
Upon arrival at Bandung station, there are taxis on stand by.
Overall, a wonderful trip to take, whether you live in Indonesia or are just visiting. The scenery on the way is fascinating, from tiered rice fields, to mountains and valleys, old bridges, simple village houses, crowded stations, with thousands of motor bikes parked outside, children waving to passing trains – something to see for the whole trip! Strongly recommended…

Beforehand, we booked tickets to Yogyakarta on Tiket.com, which is really recommended. Good English site with live chat as well. With the tickets, printed out, you can go to the electronic check-in counters (CTM - in the middle of the main hall) and print out the train tickets by filling in the booking code. Easy job, takes less than 2 minutes. We bought the tickets for IDR 380.000 (EUR 25) at the time per person. TIP: It's possible to get your train tickets the day before departure. Saves you some stress and time in the morning or night.

Anyway, the station itself has everything you need for an 8 hour trip. A supermarket before the entrance for a bottle of water, tons of bakeries for snacks underway and in the main hall, a Starbucks for that must-have coffee in the morning, to bring with you into the train.

If you travel by train, make sure you arrive an hour max. before departure so you have plenty of time to get food and drinks for the (long) travel. When entering the platform (the big stairs at the end of the main hall), make sure you have your tickets and passport ready!

Good train station with a lot of good and cheap hotels nearby (we stayed in Mercure Jakarta Sabang - luxurious for a low price).

really like the electronic system ticketing now, so we don't need wait for a long queue. there are a lot of restaurant options for us, if we needed to wait in the station for hours. may be they need to add some monitor display to show the train and the platform they will stop and take the passenger.

It is relatively newest and the most complete and luxury Train Station Indonesian ever built. It is located at Jakarta Centre next to the National Monument and its huge park, Presidential Palace, all main Ministry Offices, Jakarta Governor Office and US Embassy. Famous with its green Colour, this new station built in the year of 1992-1995 replaced completely the old historically station building, which is now completely gone. This station serves all train destinations in Java, special for Executive Class only.
It is three levels station. The ground floor for ticketing and interface with other local transports with shops, the Second floor for restaurants, shops and waiting room and the top floor is the train’s tracks level. It has four tracks with two island Platforms.
Previously, it was crowded, bit messy and unsafe, and full with Ticket Scalpers and dodgy Taxis (because don’t want to use taxi metres) and also a Terminal for Airport Buses.
After the Railway State Company lead by the new CEO, which now becomes the Transportation Minister, the public service is significantly changed, much better and pleased every passengers. The ticket scalpers gone, station become cleaner, safer and orderly, nice place for train waiting, separated between general public space and the passengers waiting room, Airport style. Good job.
However, it just a station, not a place of attraction, and only legitimate passengers can enter and enjoy the facilities inside while waiting their trains due. Public (not Train passengers) can admire from outside only.
