This long, narrow street is lined with all sorts of fabric stores, tailors and general cheap clothing outlets, along with stalls of the usual Asian fare of knock off watches, leather goods, fruit & veg. It's fairly busy and lively, but it's fairly typical of most of the big Asian city markets. What's really lacking is street food and cafes. Open until around 10PM most days.

Had wonderful time roaming around this urban market in the evening ...Had food from some very interesting food stalls. Also, a good place to observe the usual life of people if you walk into the aisles leading to surrounding residential areas... I was looking for souvenirs in the market... but it is not a tourist market ,,, so I had no luck with it.. but for clothes and street food, it's a paradise... highly recommended!

I actually wasn't sure what to expect with Pasar Baru because I had read so many conflicting reviews about what is sold there and what they have. But after visiting, I understand why I was confused. Pasar Baru is not just the walking promenade, it's also a bunch of malls along the street and at the end of the street. You can pretty much find anything - photo shops, camera stores, lingerie, food, clothing... like any mall, there are fun, cheap, and delicious food courts, bakeries, restaurants - but also there a ton of street vendors selling all the random weird stuff that street vendors sell, like watches, plastic toys, balloons, shoes... I went back to Pasar Baru three times and every time I think I found new stores and stuff I didn't know about. The only thing I regret is that I wasn't in Jakarta long enough to have a custom dress or kebaya made. There are tons of fabric stores and tailor/seamstress shops here. The locals told me this is where they go to buy fabric and get custom clothing made. The prices are so low, and the quality of the fabrics was so nice. I know there are many places in Thailand and Vietnam that make custom dresses for cheap, but the quality of the fabric and embellishments (sequin trim, embroidery, crystal appliques) was so much nicer. If you can afford it, it would be worth it to come here to get a custom wedding dress made.

Pasar Baru (New Market) was,i n the early 50's, "the" shopping center of the haves in jakarta. The shops were predominantly textile retailers, sport goods, shoes. Some shops still exist, including "Tropical Restaurant" . Dutch people who lived in jakarta in the 50's should definitely make a sentimental journey to Pasar Baru.

I hit the place in the late evening just giving another hour or so for closing. It is not a very big place and may occupy about an hour for window shopping and anytime for regular shopping depending on the shopper.

I found the prices to be higher relatively but one may try bargaining from the street hawkers.

A visit to this historical Pasar (Bazar) should be interesting!

I needed to buy some batik, weather here is really hot and humidity very high so I vent to Pasar Baru fort short shopping.
It is surprisingly pleasant place, full of small or bigger shops, but even overcrowded, still clean enough. You can buy here whatever you want nearly, people are very nice and smiling all the time, awesome and friendly, never pushing you to buy. Good idea definitely, to go there.
