Fatahillah Square, also known as Old Batavia, is the historical district of Jakarta located in Kotas. During Dutch Colonial times in the 16th century, this was the heart of the walled city. Home to attractions such as the Jakarta History Museum and many colonial buildings, this area fills up with artisans, jugglers, and tourists on the weekends.

I used to come here with friends and it was still quite but now it's so touristic and commercial. The good thing is that this place is growing to a good side and there are many renovations to make this square and the museum better....More

This is a square made up of old Dutch imperial buildings, now housing a couple of museums, and administration offices. When we were there, a lot of locals were also out with families, just walking and taking in the sights.

In a city lacking any meaningful sites Fatahillah Sq is as good as it gets. You can spend 5mins taking photos and then maybe another half an hour at Café Batavia. Don't bother walking over to Kota train station (or anywhere else for that matter).

Weekend is always the best time, perhaps some time starting 9 am before the sun is high (the street performers are there all day but it's hard too enjoy if the sun is right on top of your head).
