One of the highlights of this under-rated city, Merdeka Square is huge, with lovely monuments and plenty of options for clicks.

Jakarta is a sprawling city with a beautiful Central Park like area in the middle of the city. Merdeka square is well maintained, with a huge obelisk in the middle. There is a viewing gallery at the top for which a ticket has to be purchased. In the bottom floor of the obelisk there is an impressive gallery of windows with models showing the flow of Indonesian history. From the top of the tower, the whole city can be seen. One prominent building is the Istiqlal mosque attached to one end of Merdeka Square. A free shuttle service is provided for touring the square. After the tour of the square, visit the attached food courts and enjoy some very tasted Indonesian dishes at a very reasonable price.

Merdeka Square is the central square of the city. It measures one square kilometer or 75 hectares, making it one of the biggest squares in the world. It has lawns, fountains, gardens and monuments (the most famous and recognizable of all is the so-called "Monas" -- a 132 meter high obelisk-looking structure with a museum in the basement and a viewing deck on the top). Surrounding the square are some government offices and famous landmarks (such as the vast Istiqlal Mosque -- the biggest in Southeast Asia; the Catholic cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption; the National Museum; the National Gallery; and so forth).

I chanced upon a military parade when I visited this square in celebration of the country's independence. It was very colorful. On ordinary days, people visit this square simply to take a stroll or for some recreation and sports activities. There is also a deer enclosure in the square where deer roam around freely. At night you can watch a colorful musical fountain show for free.

Merdeka Square is definitely one of the famous landmarks in Jakarta. It is a must to visit this place for first-timers to the city. The place is really huge, so be prepared to do a lot of walking. In summer, the heat is quite scorching, so put on some sun block lotion or have a parasol to protect yourself from the sun. Lastly, the place is well-guarded. There are policemen everywhere, making this square a pretty safe area to visit.
