Mas Village is synonymous with wood carvings & sculptures. It is the wood carving capital of Bali. So, it is the perfect place to source for high quality wood carvings & great workmanship at affordable prices.
There are many galleries & workshops offering interesting & unique works of art. However, the best times to pop in are usually from Monday til Saturday. You will be able to see the sculptors working diligently & attentively on small items right up to big bulky ones.
Our tour agent brought us to a medium-size gallery. We were unlucky as all the wood carvers were taking a short break when we arrived. But we were shown a few wood types selected for carving. Not all wood can be carved on. Some are unsuitable for carving as they are brittle.
We saw many interesting pieces in the shop. Amongst them were a beautifully carved door, intricate table designs, Buddha figurines & tree-root sculptures. There were also many masks for the face. Most are of the Barong creature & monstrous demons.
We didn't purchase any souvenirs as we thought they were rather pricey & left shortly after bidding thank you to the host.

The Mas Village outside Ubud does have many galleries. But only a few is worth your time if you are a serious collector of wood sculptures. I would recommend the Manis Gallery (huge collection of master-pieces and works by anonymous carvers), the Tilem Gallery (small collection of mostly expensive master-pieces) and the private huge gallery of master carver Wayan Mudana (truly a genius). There is also a huge gallery of quality pieces in the Taksu Bali Gallery in Peliatan (opposite the babi guling restaurant). The pieces by anonymous carvers are very reasonably list-priced. You can easily get a 50% discount. If you are willing to spend USD1000, you can get a museum-quality sculpture that will delight you for life. They can take care of shipping for you too at very reasonable cost. If you are not buying wood sculptures in Ubud, you have come here for nothing. There is really nothing much to do here in Ubud except Yoga and body massage. The art market near the Ubud center is a dump that you should skip completely unless you are interested in penis-shaped key chains.

I wanted to purchase a bali mask & our driver took us to this place, The carving was exquisite but prices were grossly over stated even after 50% off. We bought similar great pieces at Lippo mall Kuta from Nyoman Subrata. His work is exquisite & his pricing is very fair.

It is definitely worth the trip to see the craft of wood carving, but unless you absolutely fall in love with something and don't care about prices, I would recommend that you do a bit more price shopping around town before making a purchase. I have purchased a ton of stone and wood carving in Bali over the last 20 years and I think you can get good prices all over town...even in downtown Ubud. Often I think the demonstration centers are the highest prices.

It can be daunting but it is worth the trip, bargain and look at the quality carefully. At times it looks like the carvings or wood work looks fine but look closer at each piece

I was taken by my driver to one of the stores at this village and was very impressed at the quality of craftsmanship. They claimed to use high quality wood like crocodile and ebony. The prices were quite expensive but somewhat negotiable. They knocked the price the carving I was interested in by about 20% but did not seem willing to go lower than that. I ended up buying a "Bali Opera Queen Mask" made of crocodile wood. Definitely worth checking out if you're willing to pay for a quality carving.

Budiasa Art was established in 1992 on three diferent Place and Gallery by Made Budiasa to help distribute the work of the carvers from Mas Village and its surrounding areas.
Actually Budiasa Art has been I Made Budiasa’s family residence for generations. It also became a collective studio for the carvers in the 60s and 70s. Before Budiasa art was established, most of the carvings were marketed through then the only art shop in Denpasar

We took a tour recommended by trip advisor and were disappointed by the quality and price of the carvings. When we returned to our hotel, they instead sent us instead to Manis in MAS Ubud. The pieces they had there were museum quality. Prices, of course, were negotiable. We paid 1/2 of the asking price for an exquisite ebony statue. I couldnt be more pleased. This place is a must see for anyone who really has discerning taste and wants to avoid tourist traps.

We were taken to Mas Village by our driver on route to the sacred monkey forest. We were told the best and most skilled wood carvers would be found here and if I wanted something truly memorable and a one off piece of art, we should look here.
We stopped at a grandmaster wood carver called Sari pertiwi where as we pulled in to the yard, I could see quite a few wood carvers chipping away at their creations.
Immediately we were greeted by a young man who was very polite and started talking about the carver, the skill passed down by generations and the different types of wood used for the carvings. Crocodile wood or sandlewood seemed to be the best quality but mahogany was also very good.
I was quite interested but also very aware of the sale that was going on. I didn’t mind though as I had already made up my mind that I wanted to find a piece of art to take home.
He introduced me to the grandmaster and showed me his work that he had just taken over 2 months to complete. I was intrigued by the detail of this carving and it was from the favoured white crocodile wood. I decided that I would try and purchase this but not until I had taken a tour around the workshop and gallery where there were lots of other different works of art on display.
I negotiated a price approx 1/3rd of the asking price, that I thought was fair for both of us and left feeling happy that I had helped contribute to this persons livelyhood which will enable this skill to continue to be passed down. Equally I had found something truly unique.
A great experience.. If this is the sort of thing your after.

Hi I'm trying to find a market in Bali where they do Islamic wood art, like verses from the Quran. I've searched around Kuta area but nothing. If anyone can help will be greatly appreciated.

Is there a particular gallery or shop I should see? Where did you buy your sculpture? Do you have an email or website address I could look at? Your answer will likely save me some time and frustrations.
Thank you,
Denise

Hi Denise,
If you go to the Mercure Hotel in Legian, they have a Buffalo tour desk in the foyer, they would give you plenty of detail on Mas Carving centre and more. I found them great. If you book anything through them ask for the guide, Yoni, she was fantastic. Their prices are equal to others but their reliability was above others. Yoni took me to the carving centre and more. Always on time always happy and got m to places I may not have found.
Good luck, wish I could be more helpful
